Subject: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Cool Beans Date: 30 Sep 11 - 05:39 PM I can make it on a PC but not on a Mac. What's the secret? |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Jack Campin Date: 30 Sep 11 - 05:56 PM British or US character layout: option-g How I found it: If you click on the flag icon in the menu bar, you get a menu that includes "Show Character Palette" and "Show Keyboard Viewer". Either will do, the keyboard viewer is easier for simple stuff. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 30 Sep 11 - 06:04 PM There is a Circled Alphabet if you go to Edit and choose Special Characters. I usually have mine on view Japanese and then scroll down and you will see it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Jim Dixon Date: 30 Sep 11 - 08:18 PM If you want a copyright symbol to show up in Mudcat, I think it doesn't matter whether you're using a Mac or PC—just type © [that is, ampersand, "copy", semicolon]. After submitting your message, you will see ©. If you want to practice, use one of our HTML practice threads, for example, this one: HTML Practice Thread. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Gibb Sahib Date: 30 Sep 11 - 09:21 PM When in doubt on Mac, just hold down "option" and start hitting keys! If that doesn't work, hold down SHIFT, too! Seriously though, making special symbols and diacritical markings is quite a bit easier on Mac, since in most cases all you really have to do is hold down the OPTION key. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Sep 11 - 09:27 PM If you use Word in Mac, you should be able to use the autocorrect function to set the program up so that when you type (c) it is automatically converted to ©. Mac has a method similar to Windows Alt-NumPad method for inserting characters using the decimal (ANSI/ASCII) character number. In Windows, with NumLock turned on, holding down Alt while typing 0169 on the NumPad should insert the character. Someone with Mac credentials will have to provide the equivalent instructions for Macs. In Windows Word you can use the Unicode Hex value by typing the Hex number, in this case 00A9, and with your cursor (insert point) directly after the number, Press Alt and hit X and the number will be changed to the character glyph. This is a toggle, so you usually - not always - can "read" a glyph that isn't translated accurately by copying the text to Word, putting the insert point next to it, and using Alt-X to convert it to the Hex Number, which you can look up in the Unicode tables to see what the glyph should have looked like. Mac Word probably has this function, but you'll need a Mac superuser to tell you which funky keys do it there. In html, as pointed out, you can use © (©) to insert the symbol, or use the Unicode decimal value 0169 by typing © (©), or use the Unicode Hex value 00A9 by typing © (©). This is the same regardless of what OS you're using, since it's the html interpreter that makes the glyph replacement. (In the last two, note that the ";" is part of the code for the character, not just punctuation.) John |

Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Sep 11 - 09:44 PM Accidental Submit above. The Cat stepped on the Enter key (and apparently several others). Sorry. Intended only to preview & cancel. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Oct 11 - 03:57 AM eanjay's method brings up the Character Palette, it's just a different way of getting at the same thing I mentioned. The Keyboard Viewer has much less in it but it's easier to use in this situation. Easier still is the third-party PopChar add-on. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Bat Goddess Date: 01 Oct 11 - 04:19 AM I used Pop Characters for many many years on previous OSs -- didn't realize it would work with OS10 -- will definitely have to check it out. Soooo much easier than anything else especially when using a swash character palette. Saved my posterior many times while typesetting. Linn |

Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Cool Beans Date: 01 Oct 11 - 08:49 AM Thanks, all! Problem solved. Hitting option and g proved easiest. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Oct 11 - 08:52 PM The proper way to do it, independent of what OS you're using, is to 1. open any thread at the 'cat. 2. In the Reply to Thread box, type "©" 3. Put a check in the "Preview" box. 4. Click Submit 5. Copy the © mark from the preview 6. Close the mudcat thread (without posting - usually) 7. Paste the © wherever you want it to be. Now how would you get it any simpler than that? John |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Oct 11 - 01:24 AM Well, you could always turn round 3⅔ times widdershins whilst saying the Lord's Prayer backwards in Aramaic... |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Jack Campin Date: 02 Oct 11 - 04:31 AM The proper way to do it © is the proper way to do it in HTML, but Cool Beans didn't say they were writing HTML. |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Oct 11 - 05:05 AM Don't need HTML. Special Characters or Alt-g are all that's needed: latter the simplest way, as Cool Beans has now discovered ~ see 4 posts back. ~M~ |
Subject: RE: Tech: How you make copyright symbol on a Mac? From: Artful Codger Date: 03 Oct 11 - 05:28 PM If you post to Mudcat messages, you properly ought to replace any special symbols like © and word processor quotes with their HTML equivalents, until this long-standing Mudcat input bugaboo finally gets addressed. Otherwise, these characters show up as garbage to at least some sizeable segment of Mudcat readers, even though the same characters look fine to you when you input, preview and revisit the thread. See this thread: Entering special characters I posted this before, but my message was apparently waylaid by another Mudcat bugaboo, the random message vortex. |

To avoid the "random message vortex", just don't send random messages! Simples! |
