On the news tonight in the city 65 miles away from me, a 71 year old retired police detective walking out his front door this morning and two thugs jumped him, he gave them his wallet but they started knocking him around, they were armed. So he pulls out his weapon and puts a hole in one of them. The other guy runs away. So the thug that is shot runs down the street and falls over. A couple guys come out what looks like to help him ... Nope, they took his gun and ran off. And maybe the thugs wallet also. The thug died.

The whole world is nuts. Why I don't live in cities. By the way the retired detective was not charged. It was self defense.

Drug gangs ventilated a house in Calgary last week. No injuries reported.

Another Calgary house burned down yesterday. A marijuana grow-op. Fourteen houses have been condemmed in the 22 operations shut down over the week.

Further to the above, it is estimated that there are at least 3000 grow-ops in Calgary. About 150 are busted each year.
The toxic mold build-up from these operations make the houses uninhabitable.

It isn't the world, it's people.

As for the 3,000 grow-ops in Calgary, that could all be stopped by one simple and rational response to a totally ridiculous legal situation. Just de-criminalize marijuana and make it legal to grow it for your private and personal use only. Period. Any fool can grow his own weed at home with absolute ease and smoke it. No problem. I know this, because I saw many people in the 70's who were too disorganized to do much else, but they sure COULD grow their own weed, harvest it, and smoke it. And they did.

Make the stuff legal for private adult use...the grow-ops will vanish, the price will plummet to virtually zero, the criminal element will abandon marketing marijuana and find some other way of making illegal money...and the cops will stop wasting their time in a stupid drug war that can never be won and should never have been fought in the first place and will have time to do more useful things to protect society.

End of story.

And would marijuana use increase per capita? No, I don't think it would. I think the very same people would keep smoking it who are smoking it now, and the rest would ignore it...just like they ignore it now. Just like I ignore it now. It's not a very serious drug. I can atest to this from observing its effects on people for the last 50 years of my life, and comparing those to what alcohol and tobacco do to people! Marijuana risks can't compare to the massive damage that alcohol and normal cigarettes do to a great many human lives. It's a tempest in a teapot. It's a joke. It's insane to be fighting a drug war over marijuana...and no amount of police pressure will EVER stop the population from using it if they want to use it, but you can stop the criminal element from marketing it if you make it legal for home growth and use.

Of course, if you do...Shane and Don will be deprived of a career plan they have for "Freedom 35" (retirement at 30 after securing major dope deal). And that would depress them, even if they could still grow their own at home and smoke it. They would feel hard done by. ;-D

You decide if that is worth the price of legalization! I think it is.

Right on, Bill. That is exactly why. They wouldn't make a dime from it if it was legal for private growth and use, and they make a great deal of money from it now as the situation stands. Matter of fact, I think that's why most of the illegal drugs are illegal....a lot of money to be made by governments, organized crime, and covert agencies (like the CIA), and it's money that is not officially recorded or accountable.

The government NEEDS a drug-using population and lots of illegal drugs in order to raise huge amounts of money through covert means.

The Taliban were the only administration that ever shut down the opium trade in Afghanistan. They did so for religious (moral) reasons. The opium trade has been restored since the Taliban were kicked out by the USA-led coalition, and it's one of the most lucrative drug trades in the world.

The so-called War on Drugs is not what it pretends to be at all.

From conversations with 'my' prisoners, IF drugs were legalised, they'd stop dealing them and to make money. BUT they'd still like all the goodies that modern life offers, and not having a job, they'd find other (illegal of course) ways to make money. Stealing, prostitution and pimping, car crime, even serious robbery would continue but more so. However, drug addiction renders the addict frantic to score, and he/she will commit any kind of act to get their fix. In a drugged state, one apparently has no feelings other than urgency, so one becomes a very dangerous creature indeed. I agree with Little Hawk, legalise at least soft drugs and remove the secrecy, excitement and mystique. But would hard drugs take their place?

They would make money hand over fist on both the Federal ans State levels if they legalized it and TAXED it like booze & cigarettes.

If they legalised and taxed it like they do booze and tobacco, that would certainly bring the dealers back into play.

There's already huge criminal activity around the sale of smuggled or counterfeit booze and cigs.

Self defeating IMO, and, since they won't alter the status quo, a non starter.

Oh, sure, if it was being sold commercially they'd tax it and make lots of money, but that's not what I'm suggesting for marijuana. I am suggesting rather that it be legalized for home cultivation and private use in the home ONLY and NOT be allowed to be sold commercially. It's very easy to grow, harvest, and prepare your own marijuana in your own home. Anyone can do it with little trouble at all, and people who are into it enjoy doing it. That would not result in any commercial sales, and the government would not be involved in the process in any way, and would not tax it.

But this is something...naturally...that the government won't do! ;-D Because they would much rather have a situation where they are in control of something rather than the public being in control if it and where they can make some money off it.

So they will almost certainly maintain the status quo, with maybe some very minor legal adjustments now and then.

One thing that has changed in Canada since I think the late 90s... It is legal now for farms to grow varieties of the hemp plant that are very low in THC, and there are many such varieties. Hemp is a tremendously useful plant that is used to make cloth, paper, industrial materials of many kinds, and it's also an excellent food source. Both the oil and the hulled seeds are nutricious and healthful and can be added to other foods.

The varieties of hemp that are used that way contain so little THC that you simply cannot get high on smoking them no matter how much of the stuff you smoke or injest. Those varieties are now legal to grow and sell in Canada. There's a farm not far from here that grows this legal hemp and sells hemp oil, hulled seeds for eating, and a variety of other hemp-based products. In the first year of the farm's existence local fools were sneaking in at night to steal the mature plants, thinking they could smoke the stuff and get high on it. They soon discovered that you could smoke a roomful of this hemp and not get even a buzz....so the nightly purloining has ceased to happen.

I've been eating these hemp seeds with cereal, stews, other foods, or just straight out of the bag...they taste great. And I've been adding the oil to salads and stuff. It makes an excellent garnish.

If Bobert is reading this...hey, man, believe me...you could devour an entire room full of this legal hemp in any form whatseover...and you WILL not get stoned! Nosiree. ;-) But you'll be very healthy.

I recommend it highly. And I am pleased that the Canadian government has seen fit to legalize the growth of these totally harmless low-THC hemp plants. They look exactly like illegal marijuana, but they do not have the same effect, because they contain only the tiniest trace amounts of THC. The government has inspectors who can confirm the THC content of a specific strain of hemp plants and certify them as legal for farmng.

Legalize pot, sell it like cigarettes. Yes, you could grow your own just as you could grow your own tobacco, but most people are too lazy these days.

As for heroin and meth, well, use heroin as a pain killer for cancers, etc. Meth is useless and it's the drug of choice for an awful lot of people -- it's highly addictive (physiologically AND psychologically). Those who operate meth labs (which are in themselves very dangerous) should be VERY severely punished, as should those who deal it at all levels. Users should be given treatment, not condemned.

They're not too lazy when it comes to marijuana! ;-) Trust me on this. Lazy people simply LOVE growing marijuana. It gives them a whole new sense of identity and accomplishment and it teaches them some rudimentary gardening skills.

I agree that drug users should not be condemned or punished, they should receive treatment.

The government of Canada has been growing pot for years through contractors who must grow the pot to have a certain potency. Medical pot is available. Companies contracted are making lots of money. They are poised to sell pot in the "liquor stores" when it happens. But, the law will dictate that YOUR pot must have that certain potency or it will be illegal. And you can't do that.

That's the only way the government can charge big money.

I may move to La Belle in the future. A 2-4 costs $46 here... I can imagine how much pot will cost (even tho I haven't smoked any in about 25 years).

hmmmm... maybe that's what's wrong with me?

Hmmm. Sounds like big money is driving the game to me. No surprise there.

The stuff that the local privately-owned (small business) hemp farm is growing can't be called "pot", because it has no high-inducing qualities whatsoever, but it does make good product for other purposes entirely, most of them being food-related at present. They do have some hemp clothing for sale in the store, but they're not making it themselves, just stocking some of it from other suppliers to show what it's like.

Illegal marijuana cultivation in private houses here in UK needs enormous amounts of electricity to keep the plants in a hot environment. The people doing this manage to bypass the electricity meter and get the power free. If it were legal to grow-your-own, they certainly wouldn't be interested in paying for the electricity themselves, so they would carry on stealing from the Power Companies. They'd also grow-to-sell, to those who didn't want to go in for horticulture.

Eliza, growing small time in in-house hydrophonics is not that power-hungry, and sheets of black plastic and shower trays can reduce damp to manageable levels. No, I haven't done it but I know a man who did. No it wasn't my house.

However, the strains of plant to produce modern skunk although high-yielding are very sensitive to ordinary garden pests and diseases and would probably die if grown outside. My late wife tried that because she liked the pretty ferns - by then she hardly ever smoked and I have not since the 60s - I was not very fond of the experience. She was an obsessive gardener and she failed.

When it's not hugely profitable to grow pot (due to its illegality and attendant risk of getting busted), then people wouldn't grow it at home to SELL it to others, they'd grow it at home for their own personal use. This would not require a large scale operation, and it would not require using any unusal amount of electricity.

Plenty of people are growing it out in the countryside in North America, and it seems to thrive...if I can go by the police raids that find and burn up massive amounts of it here and there. Others grow it indoors in what are termed "grow-ops". All these large scale activities would cease, in my opinion, if it were legalized (for private use only, but not for public sale). They would cease because they could no longer yield a huge profit to the growers. It is the gigantic profits associated with illegal drugs that drive the drug trade. Make something easily and legally available to anyone who wants it (or is addicted to it in the case of various hard drugs), and the profit plummets.

Since the government wants to have a hand in and tax everything if they possibly can, I very much doubt they will be interested in allowing private persons to informally and quietly grow and use their own marijuana, though! ;-)

It's not a moral issue at all. It's a jurisdictional and financial issue. Most people are already addicted to plently of legal things that hurt them more than pot would, and they are encouraged to go out and buy those things every day of their lives. Why? Because all those things are securing someone a very nice profit, and they have been conventionally and quite arbitrarily accepted as "okay" by the prevailing popular culture and marketing systems, which are riddled with illusion and hypocrisy.

I watched a documentary not so long ago, and the house in question was 'busted' by a heat-seeking helicopter, the heat was absolutely pouring out of the walls and roof. When the team broke in, the meter had been by-passed, the temperature was very hot and there were also high-powered lamps everywhere, also fans to keep the things ventilated. But I expect this was pot-farming on a grand scale. As you say Little Hawk, things like tobacco and alcohol are freely available to buy, and are just if not more, harmful to health. My sister tells me that heroin for example, is not actually terribly expensive, and could be supplied on demand, to people who insisted on having it, for very little. It would save a lot of crime. (Many of the prisoners I visited had done the most awful things to get their heroin.) Skunk is not entirely harmless, as it can trigger schizophrenia and other mental illness.

I've told this one before...

The RCMP fly their chopper and find fields here. They found one in a clear cut with 30K (40K?... I forget) plants. They set up a big bust. They busted 4 illegal Chinses aliens. They spent weeks and had MANY RCMP involved in the cutting and burning of the plants.

Pretty cheap diversion for the real pot growers.

Seriously, either the RCMP are stunned as me arse or the Hell's Angels are smart or the RCMP and the Hell's Angels are... well, you get the big pic. And the Chinese guys? Well, refugees eh?
