Well Josepp, I go to a monthly singaround with the great-nephew of Ray Noble and quite often play "Love Is The Sweetest Thing" there as a little tribute!

His great-nephew, by the way, plays the 5-string banjo...

I have several Jimmie Lunceford CDs. But I had sent away for a trifecta of Ray Noble stuff from 1929-1934. I just like the sound they had. Seems very iconic of the 30s.

I had heard Ray Noble on the 40s-on-4 Sirius XM station but didn't know much about him. But in my search for uke material, I came across "The Shining" (Kubrick's version) and thought I should learn that song they play at the end. I learned it was called "Midnight, the Stars and You" by the Ray Noble orchestra with Al Bowlly on vocal. Put out on the HMV label in 1934. British.

I have The Shining DVD and watched the in-between scenes and stuff and Kubrick and some stagehand were playing a vinyl record of Noble stuff while the extras in all their 20s outfits (bit of an anachronism there) did some dancesteps to it to get into the feel. I thought, "That's good stuff. I wonder if that old vinyl is on CD." So I went online and there's a shitload of Ray Noble anthologies, so I bought three and I'm sitting here enjoying the hell out of them.

And yes, I've learned "Midnight, the Stars and You" and I'll be picking up a few more songs from these before it's over.

If you want to listen to a band from the 1930s that could really rock, check out Jimmy Lunceford.

He practiced and disciplined his men until they were near revolt, but the result was the tightest band with the most impressive live concerts of the era.
