OK, so I was missing 29C (85F) in the UK and it was gray/damp at Getaway--but that was on the outside and we were inside having a ball. The retreat is a fabulous facility. There was a good variety of singarounds morning and afternoon, two great concerts in the evening. I'm not a in-yer-face type, but I did get on-stage in Jacqui's Mumming play ('nuff said!)
And of course great music in Peace Lodge-- still going strong at 4am when turned party pooper.
And double of course, the wonderful folks especially 'catters I have not previously met.

Sang up the sun with Claire Bear .... there were a number of us who did not find our beds last night.
Amos and I navigated to BWI and I hopped a North bound train and got myself home again.

My amazing husband gets really extra credits for driving me down on Saturday so I could still Get to Getaway.

KT and Ebbie made multiple Skpe appearances, but we want YOU next year... Not just them, but all the missing faces .

We talked about it being a cross between Brigadoon and 'Same time next year'   .... Mark the date for next year.

The silent auction raised about $800 for the Lieberman/Olive scholarship fund. Other donations came in from donations outside the silent auction to keep the fund replenished--we made the Getaway affordable for everyone who could come.

We'll be compiling a lost and found list later tonight. Well--actually a found list. If anyone lost stuff, let us know and we'll match it with the found list.

Thank you once again, everyone at FSGW for being delightful, charming, accommodating hosts. This was the year I got to spend every possible minute there, and every minute was worthwhile, because of your efforts.

I'm tired....
It's 2 AM and I just finished having a long and wonderful chat with Rita, something I haven't had the opportunity to do for years. But it was a wonderful Getaway, and I'm having a wonderful time staying with Bill and Rita.
It was nice to have KT and Ebbie (and the dog) present with us by Skype, but I have to make some remark about how silly they looked on the computer monitor. I suppose we looked just as silly to them. I'm not convinced that video phone calls are superior to voice-only calls.

Charlie, the blue sleeping bag was mine. It's for the dumpster, it's served it's purpose. My life is in a 50lb case and I need to make room for lots of Mudcat CDs to take to UK.
In fact, I got an extra item to take home: a beautiful hand knitted sweater I won in the silent auction which I wasn't expecting to win but I was the only bidder, so a big thank you to the person who knitted that. Interestingly, there was a fair amount of knitting going on at the Getaway. We don't see so much knitting in the UK these days.

No time now for more specifics on the Getaway, but I will have to respectfully disagree with Joe on the Skype aspect.   I found that the Peace crew singing and playing to K.T. and Ebbie who were both constantly beaming ear to ear--though the Skype connection was not always the best--was definitely one of the top highlights in a weekend absolutely crammed with them.

Of course it couldn't hold a candle to K.T. and Ebbie actually being in the same room with us---but "You Can't Always Get What You Want....."---and we did our best to try to convey to them a sense of the merry chaos going on.

Well one highlight for me was having Ron Davies pitch in on my Saturday concert number. This man is such a talent, and we had about a 10 minute practice. His performance was exquisite.

This was one of the best Getaways yet. John Townley, a new friend, was wonderful on guitar, the Kline's are wonderful labor singers and powerful singers, Magpie is, well, MAGPIE and that is fabulous, and then there is neighbor Joel Mabus. That man combines amazing instrumental talent with a remarkable ability to interpret a lyric. Into all of that, toss in Mudcat Amos' amazing guitar and singing, Donna Fletcher's phenomenal blues, Clair Bear's blow you away singing, time with Freda Underhill, Barry, and the rest of the merry band, and the legendary FSGW hospitality and you start to get the picture. There is MUCH more to report but that will have to wait for when I am home from my rambles.

Maybe next year there could be a "conference type session" where many absentees could log on to a jam session, maybe someone could bring along a decent camera. What d'yer think?

There were lots of laptops, tablets around, and smartphones were used to retrieve lyrics too! Amazing!
However, I think BIg Mick topped everyone with his system!

I got home about 1am today and just woke up. I miss our Brigadoon already, but here are a scattering of the wonderful memories I've tucked away: those all-night sessions in Peace that are my most vital Getaway experience (sorry I didn't have as much to contribute this year, homies, but life is kinda taking some strange twists right now and I hope to be back in form next year); the unutterable strangeness of watching a trio composed of Genie Singer, Joe Offer and my sister singing "Die Lorelie" at the Sunday concert; Amos' mastery of words, music and style; the unique and somehow perfect combination of David's dynamic harping and Lucy's singular voice; singing along on Mick's choruses, which I could do all night (come to think of it I just did, three nights running); the unexpected joy of hearing a song I've written sung onstage by someone else; watching the sun rise over Chesapeake Bay.

The amazing Magic Island has drifted over the horizon for another year, but the way it works, see, is that when it returns after a year of grind and labor and the usual stresses of life, everything is just as it was, the smiles are all in place, and the strains of ther last song heard are just turning around to the next one.   

Even as the glow of it draws over the horizon my ears are still ringing from the sounds of a room full of men and women shaking the rafters with Leaver Her, Johnny and my mind is lingering on Mick Lane's voice drawing out the memory of Dublin City in the good auld days, and chuckling over Abby Sale's impossibly bawdy number, and heatring John Robert's ballads, watching John Townley's incre3dible fingers fly through the changes...the population of echoes in my now-sober brain goes on and on, chiming into the year. Say, the blues ain't nothing but a Getaway finished and done. But these occasions, and a hundred more like them, seep into the soul and surface to give solace when things get tough in the time between. And when you return down the tree-shaded drive at the edge of the West River's remote anchorage, why the birds start singing and the gulls start wheeling exactly where they left off, and the music never stops.

I was especially glad to have some time to talk at length with Dani and with Tinker, two of the finest Sweethearts of the Getaway that have ever walked the earth.

As always the Getaway organizers from the FSGW performed yeoman duty and pulled off another really wonderful event. Dean Dennis, Judy, Charley, Rita, and all the other stalwarts who make this happen--thanks so very much. The charity and bonhomie and sheer musicality of this weekend is treasured timer and it would not be there without your efforts.

I think Gene and Sandra deserve a special round of applause for their tireless efforts in making the Peace Cabin all-nighters a really comfortable and welcoming scene, and for the incredible party they threw Thursday night, for bringing John Townely into the Getaway universe, and for their constant hard work and generosity in support of the Scene.

The Brigadoon Effect is still in place; the magic Island drifts off, and the songs echo on and on, enough to make the interim a better time until next year.

Dani sang "Wayfaring Stranger" in the gospel sing. A lot of times people belt out choruses, or sing along in a voice that drowns out the singer, no matter the song or the setting. But with Dani's lovely voice leading, the sing-along harmonies were a bit hushed, silky smooth, varied and lovely and fascinating. I always feel a bit embarrassed being real gushy and Italian on a public forum but ... this song wove a spell of peace and beauty in my mind and I thought of it so many times during the weekend.

All thru the weekend there were times of 'fun' and times just pleasant music and re-meeting great people and talking about the world in general......and then there are the moments where magic happens and one is transported.
One time for me was in the Civil Rights Movement workshop led by Greg & Terry (Magpie). I had, of course, heard them before as they are a major voice in keeping various issues & movements alive and relevant thru song & story. So, I wandered in expecting to just re-hear some of the favorite songs that *I* remember from my involvement in the mid-60s. Then, chords were struck (both guitar & mental) and my own experiences just welled up and I found myself sharing, singing, listening, learning in ways I had not done for years. I knew a small piece of a song/chant that caused Greg & Terry to dig out the long, finely tuned version...with no one really sure which was the 'original'.... and for those moments, it didn't matter.

   Then others added songs and stories that were highly personal, and I was alternately grinning and tearing up as we all truly 'shared' a theme about a very important time...with general agreement that it is never **finished**, whether it is sung about everyday or not.

and, like Rita, I will dig up more memories later. I just had to get something said about that first.

Even though I only made it to the peace cabin jams on Friday and Saturday night, it was a joy as always to catch up again with everyone, and meet new folks too. Got to meet Genie in the flesh. Wow, Linda and the others from North Carolina (Mitsi?) can SING !!!. Of course getting to play blues and jugband music with AMOS was worth the trip. Meeting John Townley and seeing him play his array of instruments. Having Mick mention that he liked my bass playing on one of his poignant songs of the struggle of the common man made me feel warm all over:-). Seeing Dani and Tinker and the gang.

Missed Max, Janie, Annie, KT, Ebbie, Bobert, and others that didn't make it this year. :-(.

However, It was great seeing more young people.

My brain is still partly asleep but...yes, another great Getaway! Excellent concerts from Magpie, Joel Mabus, and the Muirs. Lots of fun workshops, notably the Songs for the Earth and Food Songs. The Mythical Creatures session I co-hosted with MMario went well. Great sings Friday night in the Retreat Center and Saturday night in Peace Cabin.

Good chats with Amos, Lucy & David, Amiel and Marge Schotz, Susan & John Townley, Saulgoldie, and many others.

My Lyle Lovett-playing friend was touched when I told him his love of "If I Had A Boat" helped make me a Getaway Hero (*grin*).

Still trying to figure out how I ended up as microphone wrangler.

I think I got to hear more songs from Big Mick than I've managed at the last few Getaways.

I amused Christina Muir by pointing out Sheryl and I were probably the only two folks at the Getaway more familiar with *her* music than her mother's. We've been Hot Soup fans for years (and seeing her partner Sue Trainor in and around Columbia in the early 90's is how I got into folk music in the first place), while I've only seen Gordon, Ed, and now Ann at Getaways (and the one Bok/Zentz double-bill a few years ago).

aw, Rita, you made me blush. That's the best compliment, ever. I had some belt-y things prepared, but the sweet quiet of that group made me want for all of us to sing an old favorite.

I didn't do much song-leading this year, was mostly content to belt out choruses on the edges. Maybe because I've had more non-Getaway music in my life this year than ever before, due almost entirely to the encouragement and gentle guidance I've had from you-all over the years. I've actually participated on two recordings this year, a feat I'd never have had the nerve to attempt without the support of amazing musicians like yourself, who are warm and generous teachers.

Nobody mentioned the complete and double rainbow that greeted many of us Friday evening! It was a good omen for our Brigadoon.

It was even lovelier than I anticipated. This time I was in my mobility scooter which gave me freedom to go where I wanted when I wanted. I was so touched by the kindness of people who seemed to mobilize out of nowhere to help me open doors, empty trays. being very grumpy about the political situation, The Getaway felt like a community where life was lived as it ought to be lived. There were many memorable moments for me: Sally Rogers' new song about building houses; Peter Brice belting out a terrifying rendition of Marie Lavaux in the ballad session, getting to know the Kline's better, hanging with my magical house guests, Abby and Dani, the night before, hearing Jocelyn sing, hearing people talking about the lovely singing of my voice students without knowing they were my voice students, making mountain gospel harmonies with Mitzi, Linda, Kathy, and Sandy, hearing David and Lucy do "Heat Wave"-- who could ask for more?

A special shout out to Janie Endres and hope she will be there next year. Also thanks to the people who taught me so much at my vocal clinic. You rock!

Too many moments by far to try to list highlights, but here are a few special memories:
Peter's astounding rendition of Marie Leveaux, at the Ballads.
MMario's new song of naming fallen friends, and hearing the backstory of the song.
Having KT joining us at concerts and in Peace cabin.
Hearing Rose and Colin's harmonies, and having Olivia join them.
David's amazing harp; more than once someone would ask him for a song, and he would say, 'I don't know it,' then by second verse he is accompanying then takes a solo the third.
Getting to hear Mick sing again, There Will Be Music.
One singer who knows who he is making me cry three times in one day.
Seeing Claire in person again and hearing her amazing voice and songs.
Having the sun suddenly cut through under the grey clouds and illuminate the boats and trees, against the dark background, just as a great blue flew low through the light.
Ron Davies having lovely accompaniment to anything going, and knowing the words and all the verses of a ridiculous array of songs.
Hearing Ann and Christina together, and having a good visit after.
There were so many songs that made me sigh hugely at the end that I can't possibly think of them!
It is so wonderful to be surrounded by so many singers and songs, and equally wonderful that a non-singer like me receives such welcome and encouragement.

After 15 or so years of HEARING about it I decided to include a Royal Mile Chantey Sing as part of my getaway to Getaway...

and it turned out to be a little mini-getaway on it's own -
Bill & Rita; Carly & Dean; Sandralin and Gene; Severn, Frieda Underhill, (I can't spell her real name or I would), Joe Offer and more! Vince Wilding was also there; and - KathyW from Chicago who is a mudcatter and was in town for business so came out to the Royal Mile.....(we continued on the sidewalk for a while after leaving the pub...)

And I only got a little lost getting back to my hotel....I should have trusted the directions as I think I got off route 100 one exit too soon....but at least I knew my way (more or less) from there - just has to add about 15 miles to put the context right in my mind.

Yeah. The shantey sing was WONDERFUL. It's a loud audience but they were absolutely silent for Carly's wonderful version of "Lowlands Away. Kathie Mack, Annie Storr and Judy O all showed up (I don't think Kathie's on Mudcat but a lot of people know her.) Mudcatter Kathy W is a stunningly good shantey singer. What a voice! After the pub closed we learned she was a Mudcatter, and described the wonders of the Getaway for her (maybe next year!) and we all sang "The Parting Glass" and "Let Union Be" standing outside on the sidewalk.

Bill and Joe are still sitting up talking about everything under the sun. Now that I've checked out the new posts on this thread I'm going to get some sleep.

Dani, thanks so much for making sure you got enough sleep Sunday nig …, er, Monday morning to be a responsible and capable driver to NC after breakfast (not to mention providing scintillating conversation, along with navigator Abby).   Your sacrifice meant missing what was probably, for me, at least, the best 2 hours of music of the whole wonderful musical weekend - when John Roberts (concertina), Big Mic (guitar), Siochan (Rose), Donna Fletcher (guitar), Lucy Goldberg (guitar), David (harp), Tinker, Amos (guitar), ClaireBear & Frieda, Ron Davies (viola), John Townley, and a few others joined their wonderful voices with a bunch of us others singing and/or playing along.   I made myself go to bed at 5 AM, though I wasn't sleepy yet, so I could get up in time to be on the road between 9 and 10 AM.   But I did record most of those last two hours and I hope the sound came out well. I will share them soon, if I get the permission of all the collaborators.

I missed seeing KT (in person), Janie, Bobert, harlie N., Jeri, LeadFingers, Micca, Linda G., Ernie, and a bunch of others from last year or from 2008, but it was great to meet and jam with Gutbucketeer, Freda Underhill, ClaireBear's sister Frieda (one of my concert backup singers), Barrie M., and quite a few others I hadn't met personally before.


And, yes, Gene and Sandra deserve special kudos for making both the pre-Getaway bash and the Peace Cabin marathon jams such a great success, as do the FSGW stalwarts like Charlie, Bill, Rita, Judy, Dennis, Dean, Bruce, etc., for making the Getaway "happen" so smoothly.

And, yes, Dani, that full-sky double rainbow early Friday evening was awesome and a real harbinger of the great weekend ahead. And then we got to watch a blue heron working on getting his/her breakfast bayside Saturday as we were finishing ours in the dining hall.


I've got lots of video to process too. Need to process the clips and get permissions before "sharing" them, but I hope to have some up very soon. Also still screencap shots from the videos.

The draw of the magic vortex of the Getaway is such that returning to "the real world" can be very trying, while the call of Brigadoon tugs at the heart strings.

As Monday's dawn approached, I coerced Mick into rendering "Parting Glass", a song I have cherished since I learned it from him five years ago, and the whole Peace cabin chimed in. That made it complete.

I love the Appalachian workshop, with the incredible tight harmonies and pure backcountry sounds that go straight to the heart. I loved hearing Severn and others bring long-forgotten Woody Guthrie songs back to the fore. I loved the Chanty Workshop. Peter Midchuck's composition at the Songwriter's Workshop, concerning the girl with the gunfighter eyes, just slew me. So many thinngs just slew me, I musta died a thousand deaths over the weekend, though no coward.

Now back in suburban life, I find myself piping up with songs I forgot to sing, while driving to work and back, and re-singing ones I heard I never want to forget.

Of all the joys of this Getaway just past, perhaps the greatest lies just ahead. Nick Apollonio will be sending me his new six-string, which Kendall and I got to try out at the Getaway. Have you ever fallen in love with a guitar? I cannot wait to cradle it in my arms and let it teach me. If you understand, no explanation is necessary; if you don't, none is possible. There is something that passers between an instrument and a player when they have found each other...

Anyway, my bottomless thanks to all who made it such a terrific expedition into Neverlandia, and I will see you in a year, just in time to pick up the next quarter-note, the next chord change, the next rousing solo...

Okay I'm at work and I should be working but how could I have forgotten the meeting ( oops maybe that should be melding... no I promised Jacqui..)
Anyway late last fall on an amazing clearance rack I reached out and found my very own "Kendall Coat". This soft leather jacket was just made to give and receive Mudcat hugs. My dearest husband somehow was made to understand how important these hugs were and gifted me said jacket.

Through a comedy of errors I was late to Getaway and didn't see Kendall until Sunday morning. Jacqui however made one thing very clear the night before. Of course I could still hug Kendall, BUT there would be no leather on leather hugging allowed. One of us could have on our jacket, but the other must disrobe prior to the hug....

For all of you who missed my hurried strip on Sunday morning so I could give Kendall an appropriate greeting, well some things are best left to those involved. Perhaps next year......

Well I missed Tinker's strip act, but I DID get to hear Dani sing, and it was very fine indeed. Other highlights for me included:

Hearing Ann Mayo Muir and her daughter Christina singing together -- what a treat that was! We heard rather late in the planning process that Ann was in town, so we asked them to come and they did!

Several workshops, including Parting Songs and Remembering Hazel Dickens, stood out for me.

As always, it was wonderful to see all those great friends I get to see all too seldom. It was particularly fine to see some folks who haven't been at the Getaway recently, especially Nan & Paul Goland and Dwayne Thorpe.

The wonderful harmonies of the Gloucester, Mass., contingent -- Colin de la Barre is the best harmonizer I've heard in a very long time, and he sounds great with his mom Rose and their friend Olivia.

I was very gratified at the outpouring of generosity for Magpie's bridge fund. We were able to present them with close to $3,000! That leaves only about $15,000 to go, of course, but it's a hell of a good start, and I know Greg and Terry are very grateful. If you don't know what this is about, check out this thread, or Magpie's web site.

Lots of people worked hard to put the Getaway together, but we wouldn't do it if it weren't fun, and if the results weren't so great! Extra special thanks go to Tinker and Jacqui, who made the silent auction work and so raised a bunch of money for the Getaway scholarship fund, and to Judy Oppenheim, who stepped in at the last minute and took charge of the Retreat Center kitchen, keeping the potluck and snacks -- and all of you volunteers -- organized.

Thanks, too, to all of you who came to the Getaway! YOU are the ones who make it what it is!

By the way, if you didn't turn in your evaluation form, and still have it, please take a couple of minutes to fill it out and send it to Dean Clamons (whose address is on the form). Your feedback will help us make the Getaway even better!

And, yes I have fallen in love with two of Nick's guitars.

I'm afraid I missed a lot of the Getaway this time, almost didn't go because of a sinus problem. The meds made me very sleepy so didn't really get much out of the whole thing.
Tinker, that jacket should be registered as a deadly weapon!

The trip was very long but our friend, Peter, did most of the driving so that really helped.I was almost comatose most of the time.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Caryl P. Weiss there, haven't seen her in 30 years. That story she told at the Spoken Word workshop was perfect. Short, to the point and funny. Thanks, you fellow Coastie.(US Coast Guard)

Since the Royal Mile shanty sing was mentioned, I'll post here even though I was not at Getaway. :-) I encourage anyone to go to it if they have the chance. It is wonderful fun, and the people are very kind and welcoming. Including the Getaway bunch I got to know on the sidewalk: MMario, Severn, Joe Offer, Bill D, Freda Underhill, and Ferrara. I wished we could have all stood there and sung longer.

I headed off to the train with a smile on my face and a song in my heart. I hope to get the chance to visit again sometime soon!

One of the highlights for me was meeting all the folks who are, apparently, my singing neighbors and I didn't know it! Kathy, Frieda, Mitzi, Linda, Derek (I think there was one more... who'd I forget?)... way to represent, North Carolina! There are more opportunities than ever to make music locally, and I'm glad to have met you.

Also, an interesting thing I realized was that this year was very sweet, and a little low-key. There were sparks here and there, but nothing like some of the rowdier Getaways I remember.

I realized when I got home that for me, it was because I was getting sick (it hit me hard when I got back, and I apologize for anyone I unknowingly infected : (

Many thanks to all who took part in the Mummers play. From having too few players we got to where I could sit this one out as audience and watch what went on - a real treat! Special thanks to my darling (and long suffering) Big Mick, who was such a good sport.

There were too many highlights that it is difficult to really single out a few. Lisa's voacl clinic was great - lots of good tips there. It was a treat to listen to John Roberts and David Jones in various locations. Claire and Freida were so good at the concerts and I was pleased that our friend, Peter Cady (Midchuck) went over so well at the Saturday night concert.

Now, if I could find a way to do without sleep altogether for three days.......

It was a wonderful Getaway for me - having the chance to see and sing with old friends, hearing some amazing singing. Highlights included a late night jam session with harp in the Nature Center (why is it that when somebody suggested "Ain't Misbehavin'," only the harp player could get through it?), playing a cittern duet with Nick Apollonio, Friday night's retreat center jam with Mick, Nick, and others; Colin, Rose, and Olivia, seeing Anne and Christina, Sally Rogers, Mark Ryer singing a Lisa Null song, Lisa Null singing a Lisa Null song, Lisa Null singing any song, Magpie, ETC.

The collection was an amazing event to be part of. Magpie and Kim and Reggie have given so much to their community - I'm glad we could give something back to them. (Click here for details on their situation.) It was truly emotional to watch happen.

Greg and Terry put it this way in a recent e-mail, quoted with their permission:
"We just got back to Takoma Park from one of the most wonderful weekends we've ever had. The Getaway at West River was for us a humbling and deeply moving example of the power of love in a community, and great music too! Saturday night the Mummer's Play "passed the hat", and with further encouragement from our dear friends, our friends there collected a whopping $2,935.00 toward our bridge building fund. Absolutely breathtaking. And it also brings tears of grateful emotion. This is unbelievable good news."

(We actually brought the fund up to $3135 by Monday morning.)

Thank you, to everyone, for a truly amazing Getaway - wonderful even by Getaway standards.

How were you people able to type Tuesday and even Monday? I could barely find the room I keep the computer in, much less the keys.

I admit I had a pretty good time this year. I was annoyed to find at the very excellent local sings Monday and Tuesday nights I kept thinking of Getaway.

But I was certainly gratified that even Getawayers what knew me from last year stayed in the room when I came in and even after I started singing. I'm flattered. It was also fine to hear some others do "earthy" songs so if I come back next year I can return to my usual soft romantic and children's material.

As to the kindness and openness of so many - I can barely think about it, certainly not write. But the music - to listen day and night and never hear a song I didn't enjoy, a style I didn't prefer, a personal approach that was cynical or phoney or staged - that's pretty rare for me. Yeah - a well-spent too-brief Getaway.

I enjoyed being there for the first time, and was lucky enough to hear and join in (where I knew the words) the wonderful music in the nighttime gatherings at Peace, though I'll probably *never* be capable of going entirely without sleep for a night, let alone a weekend.

It was fun to sing (and play) with my sister Claire, who is really very talented, the young whippersnapper. Loved singing with her friend Genie as well. And the play--oh my, what inspired nutsiness!

All in all, Mick and Amos' fine singing and guitar work, alternating with great female voices at Peace, were my highlight. Oh, and Joel Mabus, of several of whose CDs I am now the proud possessor. I wish everyone well in their musical exploits! Thanks for the welcome, Dani, my fellow NCer!

Woody Guthrie... how have I never been a room with people conversant with his music, purpose?! Joe Offer, and co-host whose name I forget, did a great job weaving history and music. Loved Severn and Amos' songs, and so glad you revived Preacher Ben, Joe!

Roger Himler playing and singing anything at all, sweet pretty Marge by his side : )

Civil War, 'cause the music is fabulous, as is anything at all that Judy Cook does.

Jim's traveling jug band TWO NIGHTS in a ROW! Thanks for letting me try out your contraption. Hope I didn't scare anyone off!

Spending some good time with Sandy Laprelle, and hearing her part of the 'three graces' doing some singing in the Peace Cabin.

The co-leader for the Woody Guthrie workshop, I believe, was Pete Kraemer. I wanted to be there, too, to help out, but had my own workshop to run at the same time. Pete and I did "High Sheriff" on the Saturday evening concert, which is indicative of the kinds of songs we like to do together.

A highlight for me was Pete Kraemer and Bob Clayton's performance of Woody Guthrie's "Dead or Alive," in the Saturday-night concert. Thought I had heard most of Woody Guthrie's recordings, but that song was new to me. Pete and Bob did a beautiful job with it, too.
Will also mention Charlie Baum's wonderful job as emcee of the Sunday-night concert. He was engaging, funny and informative. Loved when he pulled an unfolded road map miraculously from the audience to point out the Northern Neck of Virginia, where one of the evening's performers lived. Way to go, Charlie!

Off the plane this morning, with a lot of great memories in my suitcase. Thanks Severn for helping me get there, to Sandrolin and Gene for the great session on Thursday night, and to all the Catters that I finally met, after all these years. The Getaway is a great musical treat, even lovelier when peopled with Mudcat icons who were kind and welcoming. Jacqui C, I have a crocheted' scarf in my bag for Sandra in Sydney, I bought a suitcase full of CDs from various performers and from Dick and Susan G. Big Mick, thanks for your kindness and the great songs, Severn for being a wellspring of kindness and musical knowledge and Genie for being a great travelling companion.

The song sharing, the harmonies, and the humour, it was good to get soaked with music and friendship, I hope I get to go again.

I met several 'Catters, and new people. Since I am terrible with names, I will not name anyone, necessarily excluding some of the people whose names I can't remember. However, I had a GREAT time, and I thank EVERYONE there for making it a wonderful Getaway. Since I don't have much of a sense of how I am seen as a "performer," it was very gratifying to hear the responses to my presentation of "Dog" on Saturday night.

Also, I was asked for a transcription of "Festival Love," by someone (whose I can't remember as above) in the crush of new people and names. If she sends me a PM, I will be glad to do so. Or if anyone wants transcriptions of these two songs, and many more that I have transcribed, I would be glad to send them, along with the chords I use to play them.

The weekend was a well-timed jolt of joy in a year that has not been my best ever. Again, thanks to all.

Sorry to say I did not put 2 and 2 together with your mudcat name.

Your 'Dog' performance was just beautiful, very much in the them of sweetness that concert seemed to have. 'Festival Love' also fun.

Another highlight I just remembered was walking up to the dining hall just as Mmario was belting out to a listener and the sky one of those wonderful songs so suited to his 'outside' voice. When I told him how beautiful it sounded outside, he reminded me that that's why he does what he does! Very gratifying when all the pieces fall together like that : )

Also, loved Mmario's contribution to the bawdy songs chapter (or at least one that I managed to be there for)... what's the name, Mmario? with the '8 more yards'? So cute.

Then, from that same songbook, will someone remind me about the song Rose led... something 'over the moon'? My new favorite song, well-sung by all who contributed verses.

Dani, I believe the song you're thinking of that Rose sang (even more verses than I know of) and that several others piped in to add even more disgusting* verses to is "Roll Your Leg Over (The Man In the Moon).
I have to admit that back in the '60s, while on the summer staff at an American Baptist lakeside retreat center in Wisconsin, a friend and I spent many an afternoon making up additional verses to that old 'standard'.

Yes, Freda Underhill (name derived from Tolkien) is delightful, and I enjoyed sharing Severn's townhouse and car with her on Thursday and Friday before the Getaway. So glad you made the long trip across the big 'pond', Freda, even if we didn't end up in many of the same music sessions.

And, Kendall, I do so hope that your vocal reconstruction surgery is a huge success and that you're done with that cancer stuff.
