Who knows Mr C :-) I thought it quite clever. As Stanley Accrington seems to have a lot to do with it I think we may assume he is on. Possibly Chris Harvey and Phil Brown but I am not sure of that.

The Night at the MSG idea came from comments in this thread.

No, we won't have Paul Simon et Al (you can call him that), but a number of artists local to Manchester who used to play at and visit the MSG in its heydays have said they will come along and play.

These include: Marie Little, Arthur Wakefield, Tony Downes of the Beggarmen, Pat Ryan, Pete Ryder, Gary and Vera Aspey, The Hometowners, John Howarth of the Oldham Tinkers, possibly Alan Bell, possibly Tony Kelly ... and we're still taking names. (Stanley Acc will be one of the MC's)


In addition, we have contacted a lot of the guests of the MSG and have received messages, stories and some CD's for Raffle Prizes from such people as Rosie Hardman, Mary Humphries, Christy Moore, Chris Simpson of Magna Carta, Barbara Dickson ..... and more will follow, I hope.

It should be a good night with a whole load of nostalgia. We may also be producing recordings of the songs and the memories ...

Chris Harvey and myself have been tasked with recording the event. Chris will be taking a feed out of the desk to record the concert and I'll be doing the "roving reporter" bit with my Marantz digital audio recorder asking the artists about their memories of the MSG (which was before my time). I'll also be going round the audience at the break asking for their (brief) memories if they were regulars at the time. If anybody wants to bring a video camera and take film of the evening then that would be appreciated. Not sure how good the sound would be but if anybody can bring a camera and they need to borrow a tripod then let me know.

Hi Mary! My days in Manchester started in 1981 when I went to various clubs including The Star Inn in Salford (Martin Gittins' club), The Unicorn in Manchester (Harry Boardman's club), Tony and Marge Hill ran a club at the Blackfriars I think on a Friday which I went to on a few occasions and there was one on a Sunday Night at the White Swan (I think the pub was called) in Prestwich a mile or so over the M62 on a Sunday Night run by a couple called Andy and Siobhan if my memory serves me right.

For the people who are coming then prepare to be accosted by a bloke with headphones and a big microphone who will be coming round asking lots of questions about what you remember of the old days!

Speaking of the Black Lion. Anyone remenber the fab nights held regularly there years back by Pet Farrow (bass drumm, symbols and guitar all at once!)? J.C. Clarke used to pop in regularly, Mary Asquith & many more - folk, blues, poetry the lot - brilliant!

Has anybody asked Mike Harding? Chris and I did an interview with him a few years ago for a programme we made about Harry Boardman and Mike gave us a good description of his early days in the folk world which included his memories of the MSG.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the thread.

It looks like being a great evening of unashamed nostalgia. A late addition to the line-up is Chris Simpson of Magna Carta.

The full list of performers is: Gary & Vera Aspey, John Bailey, Alan Bell (Taverners), Phil Drane, Hometowners & Tony Downes featuring Gerry Brady (Beggarmen), John Howarth (Oldham Tinkers), Marie Little, Harry Ogden, Pete Ryder, Chris Simpson (Magna Carta), Malcolm Thorpe, Arthur Wakefield (Tony & Arthur). A huge thanks to all of these "local and national" artists in advance.

With lots of stories and reminiscences, it will be a packed night. Audience numbers look promising too. We are recording the event (including the stories) for posterity and beyond.

Well it came and went just (like the Guild itself). But what a fab night eh folks. Lots of memories and nostalgia and great guests, from the Beggerman's Gerry Brady, the lovely Marie Little all the way from't North East, Pet Ryder and the great Chris Simpson of Magna Carta fame and loads more. Many thanks to Stan Ackrington and Martin Gittins. Can we do it again next year or, as Martin suggested, maybe a more regular gathering as it is a great gig venue.

I got MSG remenicencies booklet but forgot to fill in and hand in the back sheet re dvd etc. Anyone know where i can send it to.

In a moment of madness way back in 1969, Jenks decided that the old place needed a lick of paint. I was at art college at the time, so myself (as a regular at the guild) and two others - Mike Cosgrave and Graham Ralston were given the job in the Easter holidays. Jenk's reasoning being that if we were art students we should be able to paint!
Two days later and the worst paint job in the history of paint jobs, we were told to 'buggar off', and in true Jenks style he didn't pay us a penny.
My memories of the guild are all fond though. Best folk venue ever, then and now.

What a great night.
When I first started going to the MSG much of the time was spent avoiding Jenks as I was under age and warned by friends whatever happens don't let him catch you!
In those days I didn't sing nor did I know lots of people but I loved it as much as anyone. I certainly didn't realise at the time what an important part of my life it was.
Those of us who were around at the time were we privileged to have been a part of it or what?

From what I saw of the concert it was a great night and a big crowd. We got a recording of the whole concert, I got two hours worth of interviews with artists and audience which need distilling down into soundbites - I could have a CD's worth of memories of Jenks alone!Thanks to everyone for taking the time to stop and be interviewed. I know Martin had a video camera going as well so the evening was covered from all angles.

It was great to see so many people turn out especially many who were far too young to have attended the Guild. Was at the 'Owdum Civic Hall last night to see the Tinkers with Bernard Wrigley and it was packed. So great to see the interest is still there.

So with the demise of Saddleworth Festival (no sign of return spose ??) it would be nice to see more events like the MSG re-union (p'raps that could be an annual thing?) in local halls.

Maybe a Unicorn re-union in memory of Harry B - what d'ya think Mark ?

It's certainly possible Vin! I think there's enough people from those days knocking around to put something together. Not just in Harry's memory of course as we've lost Paul Connor, Tony Hill and Joe Kerrins who were regular performers at the Unicorn. I can probably knock a song or two out of Harry's old banjo which I bought off him 30 years ago and having had it looked at to straighten out the neck it's playing as well as ever.
Martin was talking of having a Star Inn Folk Club reunion as well. I wonder if he's still got the raffle ticket bag from the Trustee Savings Bank or TSB which was rechristened The Star Bag! I've got a load of tapes of nights at the Star and the Unicorn - I must get them sorted out.

Funnily enough i was talking about Paul Connor and Joe Kerrins (fabulous voice eh) last night at a brilliant gig at the Castle Inn, Oldham st in Manchester. There used to be a regular Friday night (i think) of folk/blues/poetry there in the seventies run by the great Pete Farrow. Methinks Tony Hill was a regular too - sadly all three no longer with us.

Only just cottoned on to the Mudcat website and enjoying it tremendously, especially as I was a regular down the MSG on a Monday or Saturday nights in the late '60s.

Loved the Newcastle Browns (with the date stamped on the label) and even sang a couple of times on a Monday, and later on my girlfriend was once Jenk's secretary.

Missed the reunion of course, but if you have a cd or any recording of the night, or of any such memories I would love to have access to it and happy to pay (or make donation to the James Cheetham Fund)

I used to work for Williams and Glyns bank in Manchester area if that helps (and so did my wife Irene).
We still do an occasional spot at the local folk club (Ramsey) here on Isle of Man,
