Subject: Help for Magpie & Kim and Reggie Harris
From: Dan Schatz
Date: 04 Oct 11 - 09:23 PM

Dear Friends,

Magpie and Kim and Reggie Harris need our help. The recent tropical storms caused major flooding in their town of Middleburgh, New York, and washed out the bridge that leads to Kim and Reggie's and Terry and Greg's houses. Currently they cannot get to their homes. If the bridge isn't replaced before winter sets in, the damage will be far worse, and they risk losing their homes. They are on their own to repair this bridge - a $25,000 expense, with only a little over $7,000 assistance from FEMA.

Some musicians are always there to lend their hands and voices to good causes and people in need. Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie are those kinds of people. Between them, they have performed countless benefits, rallies, free community concerts, and school presentations. Now it is time for us to give something back to them.

Here are ways you can help:

1. Direct donations
This is the quickest and simplest way to help.

Please make checks out to "Terry Leonino" with "Bridge Gift" in the memo line, and mail to:

Terry Leonino
7425 Buffalo Ave.
Takoma Park, MD 20912-4144

2. Pass that hat at your local folk society gathering or coffeehouse.
Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie have always said "Yes" when asked to help their fellow folk musicians and folk music communities. This is something we can do for them.

3. Organize a benefit concert.
Even after the bridge is constructed, Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie will have major bills from the repair - not to mention the other damage done to their homes and properties. A benefit concert could make a real difference!

4. Do your holiday shopping from Magpie and Kim and Reggie.
Buying CDs directly from the artists will help them greatly, and they have lots of good music that some of your friends probably haven't heard yet. You could also try booking a special "short notice" concert with Magpie or Kim and Reggie Harris with donations at the door going to the bridge reconstruction.

For updates, to coordinate, and for further information, we have set up a Folkie Flood Relief Facebook Page.

On behalf of our friends who have given so much to their communities, thank you!

Dan Schatz

I don't think so yet, but I'll check. On the other hand, mailing a check means that all of the funds go to help Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie.

I want to add my personal plea to my virtual brother Dan's request. Terry & Greg, and Kim & Reggie, have lent their voices and talents to any and all who have needed help. Their music is a testament to belief in common folks, and a clarion call for the types of societal change that will lead to a fairer and more just society. They are in a very tough spot here, caught between time and cold weather. They literally cannot get a heating oil truck to there property. If they don't get heating oil before freezing weather which is 4-6 weeks, the damage from freezing and bursting pipes will cause more damage. In the next 4 to 6 weeks they must raise the money, schedule and get the bridge built and fill the tank. All this on folksinging income.

Folks, if ever there were members of our community who were deserving help, these folks are it. Please help in whatever way possible.

Mick

We took up a collection at the Getaway and raised an astonishing $3,135 to help - which brings the amount still needed to $15,000. There is a benefit house concert planned in Takoma Park, MD on October 15, and we are trying to cook up something in Philadelphia.

I hope the funds collected so far will at least provide a way to get some heating oil to the house, even if 'full' restoration of the bridge is not complete. Sometimes there are ways to do partial repairs....

I look forward to news of good progress in other venues.

Bert, I had thought that the Colorado Springs bridge might be overkill - then I looked at the pictures of the driveway in question. So tell you what - if you can get it there....

Art, the url for the Facebook page is: http://www.facebook.com/FolkieFloodRelief .

Thanks everyone. It's really touching to know that we are a community who takes care of our own; it's more touching to watch it happen.

A benefit is planned for Takoma Park, MD this weekend (check the Facebook page for information) and we're looking good for an event here in Philly in November.

I am in awe of the generosity of the folk community. Due to some especially generous anonymous gifts, plus the Getaway collection, Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie are now within $10,000 of the amount the bridge is estimated to cost, and some benefits are planned. They collected enough for the down payment and construction is scheduled to begin in eight days.

Let's keep it coming!

The Takoma Park, MD concert on Saturday October 15 has been moved! The new information is:

Joe Uehlein and the U-Liners with Special guests MAGPIE
Saturday, October 15 · 7:30pm - 10:00pm
Takoma Park Municipal Auditorium
7500 Maple Ave
Takoma Park, Maryland 20912

FREE admission!! But this IS a fundraiser for building a new bridge for MAGPIE and Kim & Reggie Harris. The bridge to their home was destroyed by flash flooding during Irene, and the cost to rebuild is astronomical. Bring your checkbooks! Your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Stay tuned for updates on other benefits, including one planned in Philadelphia for November.

Folkie Flood Relief posted this on Facebook within the last two days:

Just wanted to let folks know that while donations have slacked off in recent days, we ARE still raising funds. Work has been going on, although it is no doubt delayed now with substantial snow coming. Frank and his crew worked right through the first three inches. The cost of this project is definitely going to be greater than the original $25,000 estimate... so, if anyone out there has not contributed and would like to, we'd be deeply grateful for your donation. Checks made payable to Terry Leonino can be sent to
Terry Leonino
7425 Buffalo Ave
Takoma Park, MD 20912
Be sure to write "bridge gift" in the memo line.
THANKS!

how long a span does this bridge cover? We needed to re-build a few bridges after the fire a few years ago, and found one option was a
rail road flat car laid across the banks....is this an option here?

Sorry - I meant 25 foot chasm (15 feet deep), and the bridge would have to be able to support oil delivery trucks and emergency vehicles. Neat idea, though.

Today's post on Facebook which I'm copying here for those who are interested but not Facebook members:

Whew! While we are sympathetic with all our friends who are digging out today and dealing with no electricity, we are greatly relieved that the news in Brooky Hollow is only 6 inches of snow, no loss of power, and no downed trees thus far. The biggest hits were east of us, from Albany to the Berkshires (20 inches in Great Barrington!). What's more, Frank and Co. finished pouring the concrete into the second abutment cast form before the snow hit. Woohoo! Temperatures are expected to climb into the 50s tomorrow, so they'll be right back to work. Thanks for all your support! –Greg, Terry, Reggie & Kim

Dear Friends, Folkies and Fellow musicians (once again),

This is both a thank you note and an update on where things stand with the bridge building project for Magpie and Kim and Reggie Harris. It has been incredibly heartwarming to see so many people come together to help friends in need, and it has brought me to tears more than once. . The next time anybody complains to me about the lack of community in our society, I think I'll tell them about this bridge. It is truly amazing, and folks have been extremely generous.

The new bridge will be a major project, and will probably need to be somewhat larger than originally estimated, with additional work shoring up the stream bank to restore them to a condition that will prevent further erosion. The ravine itself is 15 feet deep and over 25 feet wide, and until the bridge is built there is no way to get get vehicles, such as heating oil delivery trucks, up to the houses. The good news is that all of the help Kim, Reggie, Terry and Greg have received so far has enabled work to begin - the bridge abutments are already in place - and that there are more events planned, including some who are passing the hat at local coffeehouses and other events, as well as a benefit concert planned at the Folk Factory in Philadelphia on November 20. A similar concert in Takoma Park, Maryland helped the effort greatly, and we have high hopes for the November Bridge Building Concert.

In the meantime, Terry Greg, Kim and Reggie are continuing to do what they have always done, with a full schedule including a benefit for the local library (which was also severely damaged in the storm), and a heavy schedule of school programs, underground railroad education sessions, and regular concerts.

Thank you to all who have given and continue to give so generously, and who have sent their good wishes, support, offers of help and friendship through this very difficult season. Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie are very much aware that as much as they lost in this storm, others have lost more, and they feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a large and generous community of support. They are both humbled and awed by the outpouring on their behalf.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to send a donation to help with the bridge, and would like to, you can donate either by check or by PayPal, though checks are preferred. Please make checks out to "Terry Leonino" with "Bridge Gift" in the memo line (this is important), and mail to:
    Terry Leonino
    c/o Charlie and Cecily Pilzer
    7425 Buffalo Ave.
    Takoma Park, MD 20912-4144

For PayPal (thank you NERFA!) send your payments to Folkmom [AT] comcast [DOT] net and remember to note that it is for the bridge fund.

You can also pass the hat at your local folk society or coffeehouse, or if you are able, organize your own benefit concert.

One of the best ways I think we can all help as we move into the holiday season is to buy CDs directly from Kim and Reggie and Magpie. I've never heard a bad one from either couple. (I picked up four copies of Magpie's children's album Under One Sky earlier this month, and think I'll need to order some more to meet demand!) CDs by Kim and Reggie Harris are listed at http://www.kimandreggie.com/krorder.htm and can be ordered by writing to:
    Kim and Reggie Harris
    PO Box 18871
    Philadelphia, PA 19119

CDs from Magpie are listed at: http://www.magpiemusic.com/gtorder.htm, and can be ordered either at the address on the website or by writing to them in Takoma Park, again:
    Terry Leonino
    c/o Charlie and Cecily Pilzer
    7425 Buffalo Ave.
    Takoma Park, MD 20912-4144

Updates, photographs of the damage, and news about progress and events can still be found on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/FolkieFloodRelief . As before, please feel free to pass this message on to anyone who would be interested, and thank you all for being the wonderful community you are.

Warmly,
Dan Schatz

Apparently Reggie is making a YouTube video which he hopes will go viral, of old-fashioned canal-style pole-vaulting. If that doesn't inspire folk to donate for a proper bridge, I don't know what will.

Here's the latest update! Thanks to the help from so many friends in the folk community, the bridge is almost finished, and is now waiting for railings and the cement to finish doing whatever cement does. We don't know the final bill yet, but do know it will be higher than initially estimated (Isn't that always the way?) Also, there is still much work to be done excavating and shoring up the ravine walls - until that's done they are still vulnerable to erosion, and the houses - particularly Kim and Reggie's - are at risk.

Here are some pictures of the bridge - before and after.

They're still taking donations at the address above, and this Sunday will be what I hope will be the culminating event. It will be a Bridge Building concert at The Folk Factory in Philadelphia featuring Magpie and Kim and Reggie Harris, with Jay Ansill, Tom Gala, Rolly Brown, Dan Schatz and David and Jenny Heitler-Klevans, joined by Hope Wesley Harrison.

The concert begins at 7pm (early I know - but there are a lot of us performing!) and donations are on a sliding scale from $20 - $100, half price for low or no wage. The Folk Factory is held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Restoration, at 6900 Stenton Ave. at Gorgas Lane, Philadelphia, PA. For more information phone 215-848-6246.

This has been so amazing to see - six weeks ago, all they had was a ravine, a lot of grief, and a slender thread of hope. Now there's a bridge.

Dan

It's a great-looking bridge. It's a problem that happens a lot here in the Sierra foothills of California, too. It's so nice to have a creek to cross on the way to your property, but it can be a hassle when the weather gets bad. We have to cross a 150-year-old irrigation canal to get to our house - but the irrigation district has to fix our bridge if it goes out.

Dear Folks,

Here's a note from Terry, Greg, Kim and Reggie:

This morning our engineer, bridge builder and amazing excavator Frank Fuchs came by with the final bill for the bridge. Reggie came over and between us we paid the balance without a flinch. Amazing. The bridge is finished and paid for. Our heartfelt thanks, yet again, to all who helped us through this difficult period.

There is still some work to be done, so the excavator, which has rather taken up residence in our backyard, isn't going anywhere anytime soon. There is still a big job to be done on the stream channel on Kim & Reggie's side, which Frank will begin next week. The rest of the work will happen in the spring, when we re-seed and plant and try to beautify the now rocky and dirt-filled front yards.

A happy solstice, happy Chanukkah, merry Christmas, happy Kwanzaa, and happy new year to you all!!

-Greg & Terry & Kim & Reggie

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this wonderful effort!
