Subject: RE: 2011 Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell From: GUEST,Roger Nicholls Date: 18 May 21 - 10:29 AM I was just digging out Dave's Room for Thought LP to include a track on one of my radio programmes and it got me wondering about what had happened to him. I met Dave on a course when I was with the MOD as a management trainer, he was great company and gave me a copy of his album. Sorry to hear of your passing Dave but you haven't been forgotten and your music lives on. |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST Date: 05 Dec 20 - 11:00 AM I met Dave at Truro Folk Club about 1979. He had nowhere to stay, so we put him up and had a lovely next day with him. He had a lovely sense of humour and I learnt one of his songs to sing for children years later. SO sad to hear that he has passed. RIP Dave. Susie |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST,Kathy Date: 16 Nov 18 - 05:04 AM I have just been going through my old LPs and came across my signed copy of Whitby Bells which made me google Dave. I am so sad to hear of his passing. Like many of these comments I haven't see Dave since the 70s but somehow you always feel they are out there somewhere still singing. RIP Dave. |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST,fogie Date: 23 Mar 18 - 06:52 AM I was musing on "Whitby bells" and couldn't remember the tune. The words I have written down. I was working in the hospital in Amersham, in the 70's and went along to a local folk club. I had just fallen in love with the above song, and rushed in without taking much notice of who was performing, was put on and sang Whitby bells. There was a strange silence, and sat down when I finished. I didn't know him but someone approached and gave me the most exasperated stare, and asked me where I had got the song -it was from radio 2s folk program. Of course I quickly worked out what had happened, and apologised as best I could. I'll never forget that night |

Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST Date: 19 Nov 15 - 09:46 AM Decided to learn Ranching in the Evening and perform on 7th October in memory of Dave. I have very fond memories of booking him at the Faversham Folk Club in the mid 70s and will never forget the Dave of that era - all hair and harmonium. Unable to do the song in October as had a throat infection so performing it tonight at the Berry Brow club in Huddersfield with English concertina (never mastered that harmonium). My best way to remember a great singer, song-writer and lovely man. Terry Evans |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: Waddon Pete Date: 29 Oct 15 - 09:09 AM It is always good when an old thread come to the surface again. I missed this last time round, so have now been able to put Dave in the In Memoriam thread. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST,Paul Smith Date: 29 Oct 15 - 06:25 AM Only just found this thread, and only recently heard about Dave's passing. I first met Dave when we worked at 217 MU near Bedford, we shared an interest in old motorcycles. He would often practise his guitar during lunch. The last time I saw Dave was at Campton, where he was living at the time. We called each infrequently to catch up on his brief posting to Chertsey and then Abbeywood, and gradually lost contact. I regret having not tried harder to keep in touch in recent years. The world has lost a truly lovely man and a very talented musician. RIP Dave. Paul |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 14 - 02:22 PM Our hearts go out to Hilary and family. We booked Dave in the late 70s at the Dog & Gun F.C. in Maidstone, and he had us in stitches with his stories, and enraptured with his songs. He made a great play of my introduction and gently pulled my leg all evening. As many have said, a lovely man and sorely missed. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 14 - 11:44 AM Only found this thread recently too. I got to know Dave the mid 70's and had the pleasure of guesting on Remember How It Used To Be on his second album. When he used to play it when I was around I ended up sitting in with him so recording it with him in The Crypt Studios seemed appropriate. We were in touch after a long "separation" and he was talking of a new album and asking me to do something on it, then all went quiet and I subsequently learned of his death. R.I.P. Dave, a good mate and even better singer and songwriter. Dave Kirkpatrick |

My late husband Norman Sinclair and I ran the Hogsty at Aspley Guise in Bedfordshire, and I have fond memories of Dave's frequent visits to the club. He was a warm pleasant chap and it always was a great pleasure to see him and hear him sing his songs. Dave will always be remembered fondly. |

Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 October 2011 From: GUEST,Dick Goddard Date: 25 Oct 11 - 07:47 AM So sorry to hear this news - and too late to get to the funeral. I booked Dave (and Hilary) for Garway Folk Weekend last year, and it was great. I knew Dave way back too, and still have a copy of his album "Whitby Bells" inscribed "To Dick, who can't afford plant pots." A very sad piece of news. Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 Ocotber 2011 From: Wheatman Date: 12 Oct 11 - 02:38 PM Very sad news indeed, I was not aware he was ill. I did not see Dave after we moved from Stevenage in 1979 and assumed he was still in the Herts/ Beds area. He was a very popular resident at Stevenage and Hitchin folk clubs in the 1970's and, with me, one of the founder members of Stevenage Sword. So far this has been a desperately bad year with the loss of so many great singers, inevitable I know but that does not make it any easier. R.I.P. Brian and Christine Kell |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 Ocotber 2011 From: GUEST,Ken Chapman Date: 12 Oct 11 - 10:47 AM I didn't know Dave well, but the few times I met him (at Beeses in Bristol) have remained in my memory. He was kind enough to sign a CD for me, and encourage me in my own performances. He will be sorely missed... Ken |

Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 Ocotber 2011 From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 08 Oct 11 - 03:33 PM Good memories of Dave, when I ran the Catford Folk Club. I often think of his Whitby Bells song, and I've got the recording somewhere. Likewise I had no idea he was ill. Might have helped if I had rang up, instead of meaning to ring up. RIP Dave. |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Dave Totterdell 7 Ocotber 2011 From: henryclem Date: 08 Oct 11 - 03:11 PM Dave was very much a part of the acoustic music scene in and around Bristol for many years, and he will be very much missed both as a fine songwriter and performer, and as a really lovely bloke - a true friend, a privilege to have known him.
