Despite what OM's second link says Leif probably never set foot on USA soil. Bjarni Herjolfsson was probably the first of the Vikings to see North America. Eric the Red had already established a settlement on Greenland and while heading there from Iceland he (Bjarni) was blown of course and came within sight of another land west of Greenland. He did not land but when he told his story to the Greenland settlers Eric's son Leif led expeditions to find this new land. He probably crossed from Greenland to Baffin Island, from there to Labrador, and from there to the Island of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. What is known for certain is that he established a small settlement or base camp at L'Anse aux Meadows. Thorfinn Karlsefni and others followed and explored deeper into the continent.

I'd rather celebrate Skræling Day.

Thanks to the Skrælings North America stayed free for 500 years.
