Subject: Art Thieme-hospital may take 'bird'
From: katlaughing
Date: 10 Oct 11 - 05:22 PM

I just got a call from Art Thieme. He is just headed out to the hospital to have surgery on his right hand, specifically his middle finger. It seems a while ago he smashed his hand and it has been being treated. Seems the treatment on that finger masked some infection which travels up to his elbow. During the surgery they may have to remove the middle finger. He sounded in good spirits and was even joking with me about not being able to flip anyone off should that happen and also about learning how to do things in a different way such as opening his fly.

This is a couple or so weeks after Carol had surgery for right knee replacement. She is doing well, going through physical therapy and, if all continues to go well, she should be home in a couple of weeks.

Because she was in another town, it has been difficult for Art to see her. His few visits have depended on available transportation. I know after 45 years this coming January it must be very difficult for them to be apart.

He wanted me to be sure to let all of you know about his surgery. I assured him we would all be sending him our love and best wishes for the best possible outcome.

If you'd like to send him a card he will be at the Illinois Community Hospital at 925 West Street | Peru, Illinois 61354. I will probably be getting updates from their son Chris via e-mail. When I do I'll be sure to post. In the meantime please join me in sending your best wishes and support to Art and Carol.

I give thanks for a swift and successful surgery for Art and I give thanks that he and Carol are reunited at home safe and healed. I give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

Thanks for letting us know Kat. By the time a card reached Art from here I'm hoping he'll be home and recuperating well! Please pass on every good wish from me. I'll be thinking of him.

From: katlaughing

Just got these:

With Dad now. Medicated and on antibiotics. Antibiotics have the body wide infection down. X-rays taken yesterday to determine the extent of the damage. The doctor is due by sometime this afternoon to deliver the options.

As for Mom, she's understandably nervous about all this. Won't be able to visit her today.

Chris

and,

Dad is going into surgery. No ETA. No timeline yet.

Please keep Art, Carol and Chris and family in your thoughts etc.

Dad is out of surgery. He is doing well but sleepy. Bandaged up pretty good, so he doesn't know the extent of the surgery, but thinks it was relatively minor. The basis for that comparison is yet to be established.

I think Art downplayed the extent of this a bit. Here's what Chris sent, today:

Just talked to both Mom and Dad. Dad had his hand unwrapped today. They had to do a large amount of cutting into the hand to remove the infected areas. The recovery time and the extent of the recovery is not known. I'm attempting to contact social services at the hospital to make sure he isn't released without appropriate support and care especially if they stick to this four-day timeline they were talking about. Personally, I don't see that as practical considering the circumstances. It will be coordinated correctly. Mom is doing relatively well but is a bit under the weather. I'm worried that we may have dropped off this cold that is running through the kids when we visited last.

Thank you all for your continued support.
Chris

From what I know of Chris, he is their best advocate and will get things done.

If, after all this, the finger is alas lost, all is not over.

Over here in the south of England many will favourably think of the playing of "Mac" - who lost what you Americans call "the bird" on his left (fingering) hand and Paul Hurst who lost the same on his right (plucking) hand. Mac's timing was rather personal, but that was more a matter of substance abuse and he could wring more notes out of a guitar than most. The latter is immortalised by a line in a humourous song from 'catter "Wild Rover" (Clive Lever - aka Clever Evil - himself almost the archetypal pyrotechnic blind keyboard player).

"His fingers like nine dancing maggots on acid"

Don't give up, Art, whatever happens.

Had a hard time getting hold of Dad or a nurse all day today, but talked to his social worker at the hospital. Finally talked to a nurse and then to Dad after 9:00 p.m. Moving in the best direction possible considering the circumstances. Here's the latest update. Kat, thanks for getting these out there. I don't know how often I'll be able to get on here, so please keep passing them on as you can. I'm passing the word back to Dad. Means a lot to him. I'll know things are OK when the hand puns start flying. Just Saturday we were tossing corn puns back and forth. "The more things change, the more they get different."

Just an update on Dad. It was confirmed that he has a bacterial infection that they are fighting with antibiotics. He's doing well, and we had a good talk tonight, but he gets tired pretty quickly and the meds have left him a bit cloudy. Thanks for all your good thoughts. I'm passing them on to Dad, and it means a lot to him.

Mom's knee has gotten pretty tight. I'm trying to find out more and see where her physical therapy is. She's worried about Dad, of course. They both miss eachother.

I'll keep you all posted as I find out more. I'm trying to establish contact directly with their doctors.
Chris

Well, Ebbie, I have one with reference to a recent post that even I won't post EVENING knowing Art would probably appreciate it. I am sure it has crossed others minds and if Spaw sees it...

If you are able to look in, Art, I hope things are going okay.

I just saw this. We've been pretty busy and I haven't looked in here in a while.

As many of you know, I've known Art since 1963 and though we don't see much of each other any more, I still consider him a good friend. Would someone please drop me a PM and let me know which hospitals Art and Carol are in? I'm within four hours of Peru, IL, and Art and I have been talking about my going to visit. Maybe I could visit their hospitals.

Thanks,

      - Mark

Not a clue. I know he's not at the hospital as I called there asking to ring through to his room. He was not listed as a patient, so I suspect he's probably in a rehab center or something. I left a message on his phone, tonight. Not sure if he has it with him, though. There was some mix-up with cell phones when Carol went in for surgery and rehab for her knee. I hope they are just getting things sorted out and will let us know, shortly.

Subject: UPDATE!!
From: katlaughing
Date: 19 Oct 11 - 11:53 PM

Latest email from Chris:

Hello,

Thanks for being patient. A lot has changed since the last update. Regarding Mom, she is getting around with a walker. Her knee is healing up. She'll be staying an additional four weeks at the nursing home. I'll explain that part in a minute. Dad has been released from the hospital in Peru. They moved him down to the same nursing home in Toluca where Mom is. He needs a lot of assistance and will be there at least four weeks (hence my Mom's stay for four weeks). His infection is under control. He is off the IV antibiotic and is on regular antibiotics now. His fever never became terrible, but it was worrisome. They were considering further surgery, but as long as the infection continues to back down, they don't feel it is necessary. Still, that could change.

Mom and Dad were supposed to move into a shared room today, but that has been postponed till tomorrow. I'll get down to visit them soon, but it sounds like they have what they need most which is each other in a good place for now. I'm waiting to hear back from Dad's doctor as I want a report directly from him. I've started the research into assisted care living facilities. Here's where I could use help if anyone has insight. Their situation isn't simple, so there are considerations to include when looking at care. Obviously, it has to take Medicare/Medicaid, have mental health capabilities (for Mom) and have a nursing staff or some form of assistance program. Assisted living seems to be the middle ground between what they have currently and a nursing home. Many of the places that include mental health services can get rather rough. The way this is usually kept under control is by having an age limit of 65. Mom is about to turn 63, so that makes this aspect difficult without special consideration. Add to that a wait list, and we've got some work to do. Many of you have more experience with this than I do, so I'm asking...

They'd love to hear from you, but aren't up for much. They don't have Internet yet and aren't really interested in getting it right now. They would love to get a letter (remember how to do those? I don't.), a card or even a visit if you happen to be in a cornfield near them. Below is the address and the Google Maps link. They do not have a phone in the room, and it is an ordeal to get them on the line at the front desk. For now, please just drop a letter to them. You're also welcome to write to me. I plan on printing out the Mudcat thread for Dad and can do the same for any emails you send my way.

That's neat, Sandra. I think the care home is going to be a bit surprised at the number of cards AND the far-flung places they come from when the mail is delivered. We're sending one I hope makes him smile and, maybe groan.:-) I wanted to send one of those musical cards, but the tunes were all wrong, so we settled on one with the Hamster Dance, which was quite the thing around here years ago. I was hoping for one with the Hokey-Pokey, but maybe this one will be worth a smile for a punster like Art.

Thanks, folks,

An update from Chris! Sounds as if we need to really fire up the Mudcat Mojo and help them find a new place to live!

Hello,

Just a quick update. Mom's meds are being reviewed by social services as we think they aren't being regulated or prescribed properly. Working with social services on short and long term care but one thing for sure is that we need to get them out of the current place. Have one appointment to look at a facility next week but mostly playing phone tag with places to find out they won't work for us. Accomplished finding out who not to ask this week. Will move on to next group next week. However we are rapidly losing the little bit of faith in the place they are in now. Will let you know as we talk to social services. On a positive note Dad's finger is healing up nicely and his infection has not come back.

Chris

Subject: RE: Art Thieme-UPDATE THE LATEST
From: katlaughing
Date: 06 Nov 11 - 11:37 PM

Just received the following from Chris. I cannot imagine Art and Carol having to live apart, so let's all send as much energy, etc. as we can to help Chris out with the Resistance! I don't like the sounds of this at all. There has to be a way for this to work out.

It's been a busy week. Mom and Dad got moved to a new and smaller room. Not clear as to why. More importantly, Mom's anxiety has been high. Social services found a difference between her previous meds and the current, and that is in for review. We should know Monday or Tuesday if they fixed that issue. We are looking at an interim place in Ottawa, and I am waiting on a call back from there. I am also checking out a place near us on Monday. There is a Care Plan meeting on November 17th for both my parents. We'll know then what direction the facility is looking at and see if that coincides with ours. I keep steering this towards them being in the same place. The path of least resistance is to have them live separately. I'm putting up resistance to that path.

Thanks to all for your support through this.
Chris

I just emailed Chris to ask if the same addy applies for cards, etc. and also if things were being forwarded from their home in Peru. I don't know if he'll have time to answer any time, soon, but will let you know if and when he does.

I give thanks that Art and Carol are living together, with the best of care, nearby Chris and his family. I give thanks for this, or something better, for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

kat

I know Sins but sadly I can imagine how the ins/medicare folks could make it almost impossible too. I was wondering if some form of letter writing might help? Either a single letter/email from one of us but for all of us or individual e-mails. All of us here "know" Art and how devoted they are to each other. Also how important he is to us here and the entire folk community in general. They went through all those times together and now should be no different.

I dunno'........I just want to do some damn thing or another and I can't see what can be done except to support Chris and hope for the best.

What about Letters to the Editors of various newspapers with the names of the HMOs, insurance companies, government departments IF things don't trurn out well? Of course, it has to be thought out by and approved by Chris as sometimes such efforts can have negative results, especially before a a decision is made.

Sins et al, as far as I know the addy is the same, for now. No word back from Chris. I called one time, but I don't want to do that, again. Didn't get an answer. I am sure this is consuming all the energy he can muster from what 's left after work and tending to his own beautiful family. I do know he has been keen on getting them moved closer to him and his family, so I hope he can make that happen. Art and Carol always get such joy when they get to see their grandchildren.

I keep thinking of the strong lessons I have learned from Art to roll with the punches and stay positive, see the humour, and walk on, so to speak. "Onward and upward" as he always says. I hope he's still saying it.

I'm with the rest of you, hard to see any situation which would be "better/best" with them apart. I will send Chris another email and ask if writing in would help or not.

love you folks,

kat

It's mypleasure and honour, Hollowfox, thank you. And, now for the GOOD NEWS!! This just in from Chris:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
e've decided on a place in Crystal Lake. Mom and Dad are very excited. I'm going over on Sunday to sign some papers to reserve the room. It is a nursing home, but all indications point towards much better conditions. Plus the fact that it takes a little over a half-hour to get there means I can respond first hand instead of trying to reach doctors by phone that never call back or through nurses that don't pass on information from the night before. The director is the one that really convinced me that this was the best possible option. There are aspects of the place ranging from medical care facilities in the building to simple things that show the staff and administration cares. Tonight, when I told the director that we had decided on their facility, the first thing he did was make sure I had his cell phone number. The facility is old, but there are many things that made this look like the best option. It isn't rated as highly as I'd like but it is average or above average as far as the State of Illinois goes. Then again, the State of Illinois kind of sucks as a whole. It's a strange system. I've found places with plenty of beds that are adequate and places that are rated poorly but have a two year waiting list. One place told me Mom and Dad could come together, but Mom would have to be in a separate ward where Dad could visit her during the day. Curiouser and curiouser.
Mom is highly anxious and still hasn't had her medications adjusted. Dad has developed a bed sore that is keeping him from even being able to use his wheel chair. Time to get them out of there. The director is working on figuring out their transportation options. Once that is settled, we'll move them up, perhaps as soon as next week. Then there's the apartment to contend with. One thing at a time.
A step, but a positive one.
Chris
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yee-Haw!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

It's called "Amerigel" and my docs even called what it did "miraculous" when I had an open, weeping wound on my leg. My sore went from the size of a quarter to a dime in a week using Amerigel after months of the docs' treatments failing. It was cleared up within a couple of weeks. It works for all kinds of stuff and they have other products which are also helpful.

It is encouraging that Chris has found a better place for Art and Carol to heal up. Art, I am grateful for the songs you have saved for all of us. I am among many that are keeping them going now. Particularly the Cowboy's Barbara Allen. Thank you for finding that gem. I'll be checking on you the next time I get near a computer.

Yay, Chris! Well done. The sooner the better. One thing we know, when Carol's happy, Art is happier! So, let the games begin (so to speak), and please send our love to dearest friend Art and Carol, too. Let us know if you need us (or any other like-minded friends) to flood the switchboard at some infernal gov't agency, until we get what is needed here.

Speaking of...a long time ago, with Art's permission, I started copying and filing away certain posts of us, the ones of stories, puns, memories, etc., with the thought of one day putting them into book form. Life got in the way and I haven't kept up with it as I meant to, but I this is one I saved. It's one of his very first posts. As you can see, he's been around these parts for a long time:

In The Mudcat Shop: GIVING BACK

Max,

Given an amount of personal isolation recently that I never thought I'd experience, this site has kept me able to be puttin' my two cents into the folk world in a way that keeps me giving back stuff that I've so graciously been handed for free by so many selfless mentors and womentors over the last 40 years. The give and take--the yin and the yang of it---the karma---that's what's happening here. Every time we give, we get! Hell, Mudcat is more fun than chocolate. And much less fattening. You'd think I could learn that better than I have!!!

Love to y'all,

Art

May the GOOD karma keep on happening for Art and Carol!

Hello All,

Just taking a few moments to put out a word of thanks and some updates. Mom and Dad are excited about this move. On several levels, many spot-on to what Janie wrote in the PM, this is the right thing to do. Ultimately, it would be great to get them into independent living again, but this is a positive step. I have a mountain of paperwork and details to figure out. I've got two weeks. One to move them. One to move all their stuff.

"If it wasn't for time, we'd have to do everything all at once."

Even better news! Art if finally going to have a fast WiFi connection once they get settled and a real telephone!! This just in from Chris. Looks like we better keep up the energy for Chris esp. as he packs things up etc.:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello,
Up paying some bills. I have a mountain of paperwork to get through tonight. Sorry if I'm repeating myself, but I'm having a hard time lately remembering whom I told what to. In any case, they are moving Sunday to Crystal Pines in Crystal Lake, IL. I have this week through the weekend to get their move done. I have next week to pack and move their apartment. Mom and Dad are really looking forward to the move. Things have been hard for both of them in the Toluca place but particularly on my Mom lately. Good news on the new facility. They'll have their cell to start, but the reception will hopefully be better. Also, we'll be able to set them up with an real phone through AT&T. In addition, WiFi is included with the room, so we'll get Dad on-line a.s.a.p. They were in the process of "deep cleaning" their room today, and are getting ready for their arrival. On the other end, Asta Care will have them ready to go Sunday. The only missing piece at this point is transportation. We're trying to arrange transport for them. If not, I'll be going to get them. I have a minivan (having reached that point in my life) so it won't be a hard ride or fit. As for their apartment next week, I'll face that monstrosity when I get them safely in their new home.
Chris
Are there any mudcatters close by who could help with that move? I suspect the compression factor from an apartment to a room in a facility is so extreme that almost everything will need to go into storage for a while.
You've made great progress getting them situated, Chris - it's a difficult job.
Stewie, as I understand it, they are moving out of the Peru apt. for good. I *think,* from what Art has said over the years, they have whittled things down a bit. I know they had to when they moved to Peru, so I hope that means not as much for Chris to deal with..though I have seen pictures with books and music in the background.:-)
All of these years in Peru, Art never could get any better internet connection than dial-up. I think it might take him a day or three or maybe more to get used to the speed, THEN he might get lost in youtube! But, I am sure, he'll come to Mudcat first.
(With apologies to Jimmy Buffet)
Come Sunday, it'll be alright,
Come Sunday, they'll be such a sight,
It's been over a month in a unhealthy maze
And we just want them back by our side.
This just in from Chris:
Hello,
Phase one of the Great Thieme Migration went well today. Mom and Dad got up to Crystal Lake. The ride went fine. Mom is in a lot of pain and there's a lot to process for both of them. This coming Friday, we're hitting the apartment with help from Mike and Linda (Thank You!). There's wireless in the building, so I'll bring an adapter for Dad's computer. We'll figure out how to set that up next week. We're getting them a regular phone line. I have to make arrangements for that and will keep you posted. Dad will also be getting a new email address with this move. I'll be sure to update the Mudcatters. Till then,
Art and Carol Thieme
Crystal Pines - Room 103
335 N. Illinois St.
Isn't that just the greatest, folks?! Let's keep the energy going for Chris and family and friends who are helping with the move and isn't it going to be great When Art, himself, signs on again?! Yee Haw!
I spoke to Art, last night, also. His voice was a little raspy which he said is due to medications and the dryness there. I never knew anywhere in Illinois could be so dry. :-) He did sound relieved and said they were doing is best as could be. He said Carol is doing well although she still has pain in her new knee and the other one. The place they are in is much better than the last. It sounds as though it was a bit of a nightmare.
I told him the original title of this thread was about him possibly losing his "bird" which got a chuckle out of him. As it is, he said he only lost part of the finger. The real trouble apparently was the infection and getting rid of it. Unfortunately he said the medicines they had to give him exacerbated the MS. He is doing better now, though, in a wheelchair, but looking at getting a scooter! He said they have friends that live only two or three blocks away, so with the scooter maybe he could go over and visit.
He said folks have just been wonderful and to tell you all how very much he appreciates you and your care and concern for him and Carol.
I didn't want to wear him out and it was almost supper time for him so we said goodbye for now.
Wow!!! I just finished reading this entire thread. You all are the very best of what this Internet is all about. Thanks so very much for all of it...
Yes, Chris my son and absolutely my best friend in this world,is place for us.
Yes, we are in this quite nice facility now in Crystal Lake, Illinois; and it is enough for me to say that, compared to the other place in Toluca, IL, this is heaven, and that was hell. (Indeed, the Internet gave the Asta Care Care facility in Toluca just a one star rating.)
My finger is about an inch shorter now.The whole thing was my own fault. I was in my wheelchair, trying to close the door to our easement. I put my hand behind the door and pushed it to swing the door closed from behind the door-near the hinge. Please remember my hands are totally numb fro my Multiple Sclerosis. When the door nob got close to me, I pulled the door closed hard. That is what busted my finger. Figuring on losing the nail, I spent two plus monthe trying to heal the finger.It looked good to me. It healed over nicely and completely-I thught. The finger was now three times t's oriinal size. Maybe,I though, it might be time to lt the doc seeit
Self-inflicted wounds are the worst, Art, but you turn yourself into your own worst enemy by trying to treat it yourself! If you're not sure about a trip to the doctor in the future, mention it to someone (even here at Mudcat will do fine) and we'll prompt you to take care of yourself!
I'm relieved to read that you're in a good facility now, and back online here at Mudcat. Hugs to Chris for restoring you to us!
Maggie
I just returned Art's phone call from last night. He sounded pretty good. He said he had typed up a new post to kind of clarify what he'd written, but it got lost. I told him we all knew what he meant anyway that he didn't need to worry about it.
He had a great time today with PT, actually walked 100 paces with a walker! Their goal is to optimize what he is able to do for more mobility, etc.
I don't want to steal all of what he has to tell us but, friends who live nearby are picking them up and taking them to dinner at their house. They both sound very excited about the thought of getting out and about for the first time in ages.
He also sounded pretty tickled that the nursing home folks have learned that he had "another life"...some of them were fans and let the others know. I told him he better watch out they'll have him singing or telling tall tales any time. His voice is still rough from medications, but I told him if we all start beaming our Mudcat mojo at his throat, ya never know what might open up!
It is so good to have him back and to be able to visit with him. I know he'll be back soon for another posting. Sure made him happy to come back and read all of your postings and see that the same wonderful people are still good members in standing at the Mudcat Café!*bg*
I just spoke to Carol. Art is going to therapy three times per day and is doing better, though he gets tired out because of the MS. He was out when I called, at therapy. Carol sounded really good and positive about her knee and their new digs. They get to see a LOT more of their son and his family which will be increased by one sometime in July! Carol says their grandchildren are very loving, being read Shakespeare and the seven year old is even quoting from memory. Wonder where she gets that from?**BG**
They did indeed just have their 45th. It was on the 3rd. I only missed the date by a few days. More later after Art calls back.
Well, Art called me back. He was a little dismayed because he didn't have very strong of a voice, but still sounded like the Art we all know and love. It seems there's been a bad cold running through the place catching up with folks. About two weeks ago all he could do was whisper. They now have him on antibiotics and it seems to be getting better.
He said he heard on the news that they announced a cure for MS. He's going to be following that closely. I told him we keep up our Mudcat mojo and see it happening.
They have him walking every day down the hallway with a walker which is good. With his indomitable way of looking at the bright side of life, he joked about having a 20-year-old girl give him his shower this morning. LOL
With the constant therapy and complications/aggravations of MS, his energy is pretty well spent by the end of the day, or even earlier. So, not much time is spent on the computer. We talked about how it is when our bodies are recovering and trying to mend...the energy just isn't there to interact much. I am sure cards, letters, etc. are welcome and go a long way in helping. Grandkids do even more...he's really proud of them and his son and daughter-in-law.
Holding Art and Carol in the light and in our hearts,
kat & Rog
Well, he is still there and doing okay. Ups and downs, but glad to hear from you all via my phone call (I read him your messages.) Carol was asleep. He said she's had her ups and downs but they have really good psychiatric help and, when he has a tough day, he keeps reminding himself it is the best place for them both to be. Friends in town (the Donnellys? I know they've posted to this) have had him over to their house and brought in live music for St. Patrick's Day.
He esp. was glad I called because he wanted me to pass on a message. His computer went nuts, they think because of Norton, so his son, Chris, has it at home to talk some sense into it. He is still going to PT and does find it difficult to type, but doesn't think a VOC program would be much help because of his inconsistent voice quality and ability. It sounds like short phone calls are the best way to stay in touch, for now.
He said, they used to tell him 70 was old and, now...he knows it! He and Carol just had their 45th anniversary in January.
That's all for now,
kat
