DOES ANY ONE REMEMBER ERIC NORTHY -- FROM THE UK North West 1960's? He tagged along with Christy Moore around the Manchester folk clubs. I think for a time Christy lodged with him. -- On Christy Moore's web site biography section there is a photograph(albeit grainy)taken around the time of Christy's 22nd birthday, alongside Terry Colluney.on the far right and Eric Northy centre. The photograph taken in 1967 at the Birtle Pack Horse (near Bury Lancs ) owned by a relative of Christy. ---- Eric was pool of folk lyrics and folklore knowledge. He was certainly a character with his large framed spectacles. What became of him?? I would ask Christy but my missive would probably be lost in his Fanzine mail!!

I knew a guy called Eric Northey from somewhere like Bury or Bolton who had black framed glasses. He was studying English in Newcastle upon Tyne around the late Sixties/early Seventies. Wrote poems and short stories. Did poetry readings at Newcastle's well-known poetry venue, the Morden Tower. I last heard of him around 1974 when he was involved with Amber Films of Newcastle, connected to the Side Cinema and gallery. His name was definitely spelt Northey - I still have one of his stories which I typed out for a magazine - so not sure if he's the same person. Sounds like it, though.

The memory banks have hazily retrieved the memory that he later went to Africa - possibly Ghana or Nigeria - to teach.

When South Shields Folk Club first started at The Beacon in August/September 1963 by John Price, Jim and Jill Sharp, Eric was one of the resident singers along with Chuck Fleming. Later it moved to the Marsden Inn about the April 1964 and Eric was still coming occasionally, as he was studying at the Marine Tech. in So. Shields.
According to Kath Bainbridge he joined the Merchant Navy at this time and left the area

Thanks to Treacle Belly and Trevor --- This has filled in some of my faded memory. Still have the Manchester connection missing. He did have some strong links with Christy Moore. and was known to Mike Harding. If they get time to join in perhaps they will help. I ran Bolton Folk club back when you played for expenses and a fiver if you were appreciated. Great days.

Thanks for that Trevor I was wondering if it was the same Eric Northy who was know around South Shields and a friend of my (honourary) cousin Pete Brown but who had left the area before I came on the local scene in 1966. I did meet him a couple of times at Pete's flat in the late sixties but I don't expect that he'd remember me.

Thanks again Treacle Belly -- Dave Sutherland -- Trevor Sheridan -- So he is alive and seemingly creative and active. the Theatre work seems to have been well received -- your link also has the face book images of a 65 year old Eric still recognisable. I suppose he has no idea I have been looking for him. Your research has been much appreciated. I will let you know how I get on. -- just one more snippet -- A U tube link -- hope it works -cheers Trevor

HI Dave,
If you're still in contact with your honourary cousin Pete Brown, give him my very best wishes. His letters kept me alive and educated me whilst I was in the Merchant Navy in the mid-sixties and I still remember the vigour of their prose and their wide-ranging topics. I feel sad that the friendship lapsed when I went off to africa. My fault entirely. Then family kids etc.
Hope he's still singing.
Best wishes
Eric Northey
