From: MGM·Lion

Why do our do-gooders insist on their opposition to capital and corporal punishment (see recent threads with the names of the recently so-punished in their titles), while persistently denouncing as 'racism' (see recent threads with "Muslim" in the title) any criticism of regimes like Saudi Arabia and Iran* who pertinaciously retain these penalties

~~ which, we are constantly told by those to whom I refer, are unacceptable in any "civilised" country ~~

explicitly in the name of Islam

~~ which observation I daresay they will denounce as "racist"?

—— Can they honestly not see any hint of inconsistency or bad faith in their simultaneous holding of these irreconcilable positions; both required, presumably, by the mandatory left-wing agenda embraced by such people?

~Michael~

* See this morning's Times: p 31 for news of Saudi Arabia's 58th beheading this year; and p 7 for Iran report - account (with graphic photograph) of the 74 lashes given to a young student at the end of a year's imprisonment for writing a letter critical of certain educational policies; news on the impending death sentence for 'apostasy', awaiting ratifification by the country's religious leader, of a Muslim who converted to Christianity; and on the sentence of a year's imprisonment and 90 lashes on a prominent actress who appeared in an Australian-produced film critical of certain aspects the country's policies.

A missed shaft I fear. You won't find many defending the regimes in Iran or Saudi Arabia. But you probably knew that, and are minded to repeat a certain quote denouncing Islam as a "wicked, vicous faith" - story of the quote here - http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/jan/26/otherparties.thefarright

If you lie down with dogs you'll probably get fleas.

Well, I'm opposed to capital punishment, but I haven't denounced anyone as racist lately, and I can't imagine I would do so just because someone criticized Iran or Saudi Arabia. So I guess I'm not a good person for you to pick a fight with.

You may call me a do-gooder if you like. I do hope to do some good in my life.

Why is "do-gooder" an insult anyway?   We \might disagree about what things are "good", but by definition whatever we think is good should be what we want.

People who believe in capital punishment, whether they live in the USA or in Saudi Arabia, see it as something good, or they wouldn't believe in it. Not my kind of do-gooders, but that's another thing.

So, prnouncing the bleeding-hearted as "do-gooders" implies that you are not one. You therefore fall somewhere else on the spectrum: a do-bad, or a do-as-little-as-possibler.

Which do you claim as your own position?

Although I know you don't want an answer, the answer is simple. Criticisms of a whole class, race, nation or genus of people is very different from criticism of a social practice, and it would be dunderheaded to conflate the two things; so the two positions are not as contradictory as you would like to rhetorically paint them, you see.

It is perfectly possible to want to grant tolerance to, for example, people of Muslim faith, or Arab lineage, while condemning any brutality they might have preserved in their cultural agreements as less than humane.

Furthermore, condemning "Muslims" because some Muslims practice capital punishment is painting the entire class with the sins of a subset thereof, which is practically the definition of racism.

Well said, Amos.

Criticising all Muslims generically for the actions of some is like criticising all Christians for the actions of the IRA.

(I am tryin' to remember just who in hell around here's been praisin' the gentle methods and pastimes of Saudi Arabian and Iranian law eforcement officers...and I can't seem to come up with any names.)

They probably think their selfless behaviour makes them popular but the truth about 'do-gooders' is nobody really likes them.

A series of studies found that those who volunteer to take on unwanted tasks or who hand out gifts without being prompted, quickly alienate themselves.
Psychologists believe this is because it makes the rest of us feel guilty and puts pressure on us to behave in an equally selfless fashion.

Researchers say do-gooders come to be resented because they 'raise the bar' for what is expected of everyone.

It suggests that people might want to think twice before waxing lyrical about their charity work or volunteering to put in extra hours at the office.

BTNG/TheFamousEccles - decide which account you're going to be and stick with it. Talking to yourself in a thread in which a lot of people are already misbehaving isn't helpful, do you recall those words ?

Do-gooders are also seen as deviant rule breakers. It's as if they're giving away Monopoly money so someone can stay in the game. Take the case of Miss Lumley and those foreign soldiers, the government have to foot the bill, not her.

The first thought that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread was.."what sort of society have we spawned where the the name "Do Gooder" is seen as an insult.

However, others have beaten me to it, so I'll get back in my box.

Cheers

In Italy it's innocent until proven guilty given the number of defendants left free to go because their appeals are still pending
