Subject: Squire Parsons From: John from Schiehallion Date: 29 Sep 99 - 05:16 PM Can anyone point me to a midi or abc version of 'Squire Parsons'? I found this tune on the CD Celtic Treasure, containing the music of Thurlough O'Carolan. I have checked a couple of excellent sites dedicated to this composer without success and it now appears that he may not have been the composer of this tune! Anyway it is a good tune. Thanks for any help. John |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Squire Parsons From: Lesley N. Date: 29 Sep 99 - 10:27 PM Donal O'Sullivan thinks it may be Carolan because it is in a book with a number of Carolan tunes (Aria Di Camera), the date would fit Carolan and the subject is probably William Parsons, who lived in an area which would indicate Carolan almost certainly knew him. However, there is no direct evidence to support the fact so he indicates it may not be Carolan. If someone doesn't get to it before then, I can get a single line melody of the tune this weekend sometime. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Squire Parsons From: John from Schiehallion Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:44 PM Vixen, Wolfgang, thanks for your efforts at overcoming the technology! Unfortunately, the excellent site you referred me to was one I had already visited. The Contemplator does not have a midi of this tune on her site. I spent a pleasant hour last night listening to the CD and then alternating between piano and computer keyboards, trying to write it down. Its getting close, but its still not quite right. My (although maybe not Thirlough's!) version of the chords are quite complex for an apparently simple tune. thanks John |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Squire Parsons From: Lesley N. Date: 30 Sep 99 - 05:24 PM Wow - I was beginning to think I was loosing track of what was on my site (I am the Contemplator)... I was *pretty sure* I didn't have the squire (I have Tobias Peyton but he is not the Squire - that's another tune). As I said I'd be happy to do a single line melody this weekend. (I'm off to a class tonight and teach school tomorrow.) It won't help you with the chords though - and I didn't find a resource with a full arrangement. I used to have a package that added chords but they were always DREADFUL so I gave up on that! |

Subject: Tune Add: SQUIRE PARSONS (Carolan) From: Lesley N. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 07:01 PM Thanks for the compliments! Here is the Squire, single line midi and abc through the wonder of miditext (and straight from Carolan's Complete Works). It doesn't have the correct repeats in it but I figured it would be a start!
MIDI file: squirep.mid Timebase: 120 Name: SQUIRE PARSONS - Carolan This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the March 10 MIDItext 98 software and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1
