So, no more Betty's hotpots in The Rovers Return. Betty Driver, the actress who played Betty Turpin has died at the age of 91. She's been appearing in Coronation St since I was at school - and I'm now retired! Amazingly, she was still in 'Corrie' this summer when she was aged 90. Admittedly she only sat by the bar but was still delivering her lines like a pro with that dry northern wit of hers. Just goes to show that working past the usual retirement age can sometimes give you a long and fruitful life. Maybe I should go back to work? RIP Betty - you and your hotpots will be missed by Corrie fans and the regulars at The Rovers Return.

She seemed like a good lady who endured a miserable childhood-listen to her Desert Island Discs. A National Treasure if ever. RIP Betty Turpin.

I read somewhere that Betty Driver said she was a lousy cook and wouldn't know how to cook one in real life.

She had an exceptionally long career. Sorry she's gone.

Why below the line? "Corrie" was only part of her career. She started as a singer, a fine one at that, at the age of 12. Will someone please move this to where it belongs. Out of respect for a fine performer if nothing else

RIP Betty Driver

She spent some time as a real pub landlady but all the pints she poured in the Rovers were half froth! In our household if we are served one like that we call it a Betty Turpin!

I concur with above Guest! Just heard her on a tribute prog - Brilliant Voice. Sang with some big bands apparantly.

Anyone know if she ever 'did a bit' on Corry?

She had a very sad early life but was happy on TV for the second half of her career.

RIP

D.

Sad news, I don't watch soaps, but was aware she was a well respected singer. She was popular during the war years, my dad saw her on stage entertaining the troops before he went to France and admired her greatly. She was known and respected by such people as Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields, that says a lot about her.

A great life and a full life.

Bless her.

There are several other song links of hers on that one Bugsy linked to. I've never heard of her, but then, I've never seen any of these British soaps, either. This one gives you a little better look at her and sound of her voice.

I hadn't seen or heard much of her - apart from as Betty Turpin - before the tribute I mentioned. Those YouTube clips are great - She could have easily rivalled Gracie Fields. Thanks all for linking them
and...

Move it up!

Thanks for moving this above the line which is where I now see I should have posted in the first place. I vaguely knew that Betty had been a singer during the war but was not aware of the extent of her singing & acting career until I read the obits. Having now heard her sing, I agree that she had a great voice and wonder why she never became as famous as Vera Lynne or Gracie Fields? Anyway, she gained her fame in later years as Betty Turpin, barmaid/cook at the Rovers Return and seemed content with that.

Perhaps she was so unhappy in her early life it could be the reason that she never became as famous as Vera Lynne or Gracie Fields. My father remembers her when she was a young girl and has always spoken about her good singing voice everytime she appeared on Corrie. Betty will be missed by so many RIP.
