Subject: Lyr Req: Lyrics for honeysuckle time
From: GUEST,Student of the RFC

I have been searching for the lyrics to honeysuckle time by the Red Fox Chasers but I haven't been able to locate them. here is the link to the song on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjtl8DwoRiQ

I am in an old time band studying the red fox chasers and we are hoping to add this song to our repertoire but we cannot figure out what they are saying.

I learned this off the County LP about 40 years ago and used to do it with some judicious mumbling, though I haven't sung it in years. The mp3 is a little clearer than the old vinyl but there are still 2 places that elude my ear in a casual audition. Overall it goes like this:

In my boyish days I thought that I was grand
Acted just like a little man
Loved a pretty little curlyheaded girl
I'd lead her around by the hand
Fair as a lily wherever she goes
Her lips just as red as a rose
I asked her to be mine when the spring comes shine [? that's what it sounds like -- when the spring sun shines, maybe?]
And that'll be in honeysuckle time.

Now sixteen well I'm twenty-nine [again, ? but what it sounds like]
Sweet little girl of mine
... say that you're mine
Be married in honeysuckle time
Fair as a lily wherever she goes
Her lips just as red as a rose
I asked her to be mine when the spring comes shine [again]
And now it's honeysuckle time

A couple of instrumental passages, then repeats from
Fair as a lily wherever she goes

Cf this page:
http://campbellstories.com/storytellers/zane-campbell/writings/a-family-album-of-hillbilly-braggarts-preachers-and-drunks/

The whispered story is that Guy Brooks wrote the song in re: some mountain feelings for his niece, so the 16-29 thing may be correct after all! At any rate, try Zane Campbell for the lyrics; he says he knows what they are. And if you get them, come back and tell the rest of us!

The missing words in the second verse are

"When wedding bells chime, say you'll be mine."

Don't know why I couldn't hear that the first time through.

I've listened carefully to the recording and I can't improve on what's been already posted.

The Uncle Guy story is apocryphal. In his notes to the Tompkins Square 2CD set, Kinney Rorrer indicates that it was from Tin Pan Alley and written years before The Red Fox Chasers recorded it in 1928. Meade et alia give at page 134 of their 'Country Music Sources': 'Honeysuckle Time: Stanley Murphy, wds, Henry J. Marshall, m, 1916; Ref (1) Delaney #75 [Delaney's Song Book, #1-88 NYC, Wm W.Delaney 1892-1921]'.

I had a search of Levy and a couple of other sheet music sites, but couldn't find it.

Here's the song that Stewie's source referred to; however, despite the similarity of the title, I don't think it's the same song that the Red Fox Chasers recorded.

WorldCat.org shows that there are a few libraries that have the sheet music, described thus:

IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME
Words, Stanley Murphy; music, Henry I. Marshall
New York : Jerome H. Remick, ©1916.

The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara has an Edison recording from 1916 from which I transcribed this:

Lyrics below as sung by Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan.

Oh, down in sunny Tennessee
In a pretty little cottage by a stream, (yee-hah!)
Someone's waitin' dar for me.
It's a little gal that's always in my dreams.
I've been counting ev'ry minute of the time
Till I reach that sunny clime, (yee-hah!)
And it won't be long till I sing this little song to her in honeysuckle time:

In honeysuckle time
In sunny Tennessee,
On a night in June,
With a sweet bassoon
Floating o'er the meadows to my gal and me,
In honeysuckle time,
The wedding bells will chime.
Then my honey, me and you,
Will be one instead of two (doggone!)
In honeysuckle time.

In honeysuckle time,
The wedding bells will chime.
Then my honey, me and you
Will be one instead of two (oh my!)
In honeysuckle time.

Oh, down in sunny Tennessee
Gonna take my honey on a honeymoon. (oh-oh-oh!)
Oh, how happy we will be.
Nothing else to do but cuddle up and spoon.
I been savin' all my lovin' for my hon'.
Got it in da bank of love, (oh, my!)
And I'll spend it all with a lots of cider, too,
Beneath a honeymoon above.

In honeysuckle time,
In sunny Tennessee,
On a night in June,
With a sweet bassoon,
Floating o'er the meadows to my gal and me,
In honeysuckle time,
The wedding bells will chime.
There'll be nothing else to do,
Only just to bill and coo, (mm-hmm!)
In honeysuckle time.

In honeysuckle time,
The wedding bells will chime.
There'll be nothing else to do,
Only just to bill and coo,
In honeysuckle time.

Here's another song with a similar title. The New York Public Library has the sheet music for this one:

IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME (WHEN EMALINE SAID SHE'D BE MINE)
Words and Music by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake
From the musical "Shuffle Along" (1921, revived on Broadway in 1933 and 1952)
M. Witmark & Sons, ©1921.

Ev'rybody loves Emaline.
She's the gal that all the fellows hang around.
Ev'rybody knows Emaline.
Why, she's the pal of ev'ry other gal in town.
But ev'ry pal and gal will soon be singing the blues
When they hear the latest news.

In honeysuckle time
Sweet Emaline
Said she'd be mine,
And in the wedding line,
There'll be no hesitating,
For the preacher will be waiting,
When the knot am tied,
With "Emy" by my side.
All the fellows will be jealous and feeling kinda rough
When I come along with Emaline a-struttin' my "stuff."
Hot dog, my soul, gonna knock 'em cold!
Why, I'll be worth my weight in gold
In honeysuckle time
When Emaline
Said she'd be mine.

[This song was revived in the revue "Bubbling Brown Sugar" (1976).]

Well done, Jim, for tracking it down. Sounds like both Rorrer and Meade got the attribution wrong.

Subject: Lyr Add:MEET ME SWEET KATHLEEN IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 21 Oct 11 - 12:13 AM

Another one with a similar title, from the sheet music at Maine Music Box:

MEET ME, SWEET KATHLEEN, IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME
Words by Robert F. Roden; music by J. Fred Helf.
New York: Helf & Hager Co., Inc. ©1906.

1. By a quaint old fashioned garden I am straying
As the shadows lengthen at the twilight hour,
And it takes me back to one night in the gloaming
When I parted from New England's fairest flow'r.
Sweet Kathleen, I seem to see you in my dreaming
In the doorway where the honeysuckles climb,
Where I murmured as I kissed away the tear drops,
"I'll return, dear heart, in honeysuckle time."

CHORUS: When the honeysuckles once again are blooming,
We will hear the dear old church bell sweetly chime.
In the gloaming, oh, my darling,
Meet me, sweet Kathleen, in honeysuckle time.

2. It is honeysuckle time in old New England.
I am roaming through the scenes I love so dear.
Nature's fair tonight, but still my heart is sighing,
For the girl who said she'd meet me is not here.
In the doorway where I left her, no one's waiting.
In the little church the sweet bell sadly chimes,
And they seem to say in mem'ry of my darling,
"Meet me, sweet Kathleen, in honeysuckle time."

Subject: Lyr Add:I'LL BE WITH YOU HONEY IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 21 Oct 11 - 12:41 AM

Another one with a similar title, from the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

I'LL BE WITH YOU HONEY IN HONEYSUCKLE TIME
Words and music by Olive Frields Newman
Chicago: Will Rossiter, ©1910.

1. Dry your tears, honey dear. Don't you sigh. Don't you cry,
For it breaks my poor heart, dear, to leave you.
I'll return in the spring and I'll bring you a ring
If you promise that you'll be true.
Now cheer up and smile on me, honey,
And be happy while I am away.
I will promise you too that I'll be fond and true
And remember these words I say:

CHORUS: I'll be with you, honey, when it's honeysuckle time,
When the flowers are in bloom.
In the sunny summer time
To the church we'll go, dear,
And then the wedding bells will chime.
You can bet your money,
I'll be with you, honey, when it's honeysuckle time.
One good kiss deserves another.
That's the only music that was ever meant for me,
That tantalizin' hypnotizin' mesmerizin' Mendelssohn tune.

2. Never fear, honey dear. Don't you sigh. Don't you cry,
For you see, I have come back to wed you.
Springtime, dear, it is here, with its sunshine and cheer,
And its beautiful skies of blue.
Now put on your little sun-bonnet
And your dress with the flowers so gay.
We will walk hand in hand to the altar so grand
While the wedding march they will play.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN IT'S HONEYSUCKLE TIME IN HONEYLAND
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 21 Oct 11 - 12:57 AM

Yet another one, also from the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

WHEN IT'S HONEYSUCKLE TIME IN HONEYLAND
Words, Jeff Branen. Music, Jimmie Hollis.

1. Honey dear, can't you hear the honeysuckles calling?
I'll soon be on my way,
Strolling soon 'neath the moon
'Mid evening shadows falling.
I'm leaving here today.
I'm as happy as the flow'rs that bloom in May.

CHORUS: When it's honeysuckle time in Honeyland
And the bees are buzzing 'round the vine,
You're my only one; slip your bonnet on,
And hurry; don't worry.
I'll be right there in line.
When the wedding bells ring out to beat the band,
We'll be marching up the aisle, we two.
When it's honeysuckle time in Honeyland,
I'll be waiting, honey dear, for you.

2. Honey dear, can't you hear the dear old preacher saying
Sweet words to you and me?
How sublime! All the time
The organ will be playing,
"What shall the harvest be?"
What a happy day 'twill be for you and me!

Hey thanks guys, I am going to use the lyrics from 12-stringer, those are exactly what I was looking for. thanks for all the help! I contacted Zane Campbell but he hasn't responded, however I think the lyrics we have will work great with some judicious mumbling tossed in here and there.

12-stringer, I think the line in v1 is:

I asked her to be mine come rain come shine

(I'm still looking into the bit in v2)
