Subject: The (Sacred) Harp That Once... From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Oct 11 - 06:01 AM Had my first experience of Sacred Harp yesterday, sitting in for an hour or so at a sing-in in Cork (Ireland), winging it among the bass section. Enjoyed it a lot but am not sure of my overall reaction to the whole package. I see some older threads on Mudcat about the genre - any current comments? Regards p.s. Subject: RE: The (Sacred) Harp That Once... From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Oct 11 - 06:51 AM Hi Mo. No - not at all! The texts seem largely biblical in origin - something with which I have no quarrel. I think what's nagging at me is the rather 'mechanical' approach to time and stress I sensed. Much of the harmony and polyphony, on the other hand, I enjoyed hugely. As I said, I enjoyed the experience - and will certainly take another opportunity if it arises. I'm just curious about how this particular genre is viewed by this particular community, I suppose.
