Had my first experience of Sacred Harp yesterday, sitting in for an hour or so at a sing-in in Cork (Ireland), winging it among the bass section. Enjoyed it a lot but am not sure of my overall reaction to the whole package. I see some older threads on Mudcat about the genre - any current comments?

What was it about the 'package' that you are not sure of?
Are we back to the 'singing songs you don't agree with' thread?

Hi Mo.

No - not at all! The texts seem largely biblical in origin - something with which I have no quarrel. I think what's nagging at me is the rather 'mechanical' approach to time and stress I sensed. Much of the harmony and polyphony, on the other hand, I enjoyed hugely.

As I said, I enjoyed the experience - and will certainly take another opportunity if it arises. I'm just curious about how this particular genre is viewed by this particular community, I suppose.

For me it's terrific fun, and I try to participate every time I get a chance! I enjoy the music, the fellowship - everything about it.
