I've had a page about the Italian-type ocarina (in particular, as used as a folk instrument) on my website for years, but I've just done a drastic update to it.

http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Ocarina/

Should be interesting to people who find that sort of thing interesting.

Forwarding this to a girl who just got an ocarina in Italy, and is playing it quite well.

I may post some pics of some nice oval/round ocarinas I acquired in the Wash DC area a number of years ago. Quite well made and tuned properly. (made by Carolyn Bassing)

Lovely Beefheart links! Just on with Decals right now actually, so some timely info & insights...

My favourite ocarina is a tiny clay tear-drop (but hardly fast & bulbous) about an inch long I bought from Ray Mann around 1979 or so. It really is the sweetest sounding thing. With open fingering it sounds the exact same pentatonic scale as Bob Pegg plays to introduce the first Mr Fox album, but with cross-fingering you can play a regular scale - and a mate of mine once amazed me by playing bird-song on it.

I recently found my old clay sweet-potato which I bought in Newcastle (Jeavons!) when I was still at school - so maybe 76 / early 77 - and still in perfect working order.

I have just uploaded an Italian translation of that, by my friend Elisa Mazzariol:

One big file, 2.7Mb.
