I've been lucky enough to do several Radio sessions in London with Mr T over the years...Format being 4 songs....Plus soundcheck, don't think any of them took longer than 30 minutes! And as others have said, a proper gent! (Also done a session with Teddy as well, with Mum joining in!)

I've seen RT many, many times, either solo or with a small group, and every time I was mesmerised. His guitar playing is not only clever but daring - he plays solos where you think the notes shouldn't go and pulls it off. His songs are the work of a master craftsman, with words that dig into the human condition, and hi voice is passionate. A number of people I know say they don't "get" him - their loss as far as I'm concerned.

Did I say I like him, by the way?

watch (available on You Tube, of course!) the episode of the BBC's Folk Britannia series featuring Fairport Convention and listen to the amazement in Joe Boyd's voice when he describes the first time he saw Richard Thompson play, to quote.." he took a solo....he took an effin' solo!!" at that point in time, RT was only 17 years of age.

He played an acoustic show here in Naples, way down in the south of Florida, about 20 years ago with Danny Thompson on double bass. That evening still resonates within me.

Apparently he tours the US pretty frequently, and is usually either in Nashville or someplace nearby. I know last year he was in town and we couldn't go that time, but he was also in Atlanta with Loudoun Wainwright. I would have loved to have seen that, but alas, it didn't fit with the schedule or the budget.

I swear, I think he has two extra invisible hands or something. Mister and I sat there all night going "how the hell did he do that???"

I've seen him many times in band and solo contexts, and you're right. He does a great show.

Re "this great big secret", how true. Three or four of us flatmates used to go and see Richard (and Linda in those days) and we had this running joke when one flatmate mentioned RT, another said "WHO?" This was because of the blank reaction we always got if we recommended Richard to people at work, etc. This was London too, hip cool city blah blah blah.

When you think that every time Lou Reed or Patti Smith pick his/her nose, it's apparently a world shaking event.....but such is the way of the world oh my brothers.

I saw RT @ at the Keswick Theatre (close to Philadelphia) about 10 days ago. It's about the 12th time I've seen him perform. I started listening to him in 1969 when he was with Fairport Convention. Like me he was just a teenager back then. I, too, was in a similar band (girl singer) & was a big fan of Sandy Denny. I didn't re-discover Richard until 25 years later when he performed @ Bogarts in Cincinnati. Since then I've tried to see him anytime he's within 100 miles of where I live. He is by FAR the best guitarist I've ever heard & the songs he writes are incredibly "deep," not in a facitious way - but truly from the heart. The lyrics pop into my head every day - mainly b/c so many are relevant to the "human experience"
I'm happy for you (& for Richard) that you discovered him.   I always feel guilty when I see him in person. Its like he's this great big secret nobody knows about. He deserves so much more recognition and fame. It will hapen someday - when the rest of the world is as lucky as we are to watch him peform. I'm happy for you. I hope his talent & willingness to share his gifts bring you many more wonderful moments.
PS: I was lucky enough to have him sign my guitar the last time I saw him. What a sweet man.

Y'all, I got to see Richard Thompson last night in a solo acoustic show. Now, understand, I am pretty much a latecomer to the RT bandwagon, but that's really neither here nor there.

He played for two hours, but I could have sat there all night. And honestly, I don't even have the words to describe it. Mister and I go to live shows so rarely because the tickets are usually expensive, but we lucked out that these were only $30 each. After we saw Paul McCartney last year, I said, "I never need to go to another concert, ever, except one. . . Richard Thompson."

I feel like I can die happy now. :-)
