I used to sing this and cannot remember it. Can someone provide the name and lyrics for this?I know the end is at hand, for me and 100 good men,the coat caught fire from somebody's lamp   chorus;dear mothers and fathers goodbye, dear sisters and brothers goodbye etc

Sounds like "The Dying Miner" by Woody Guthrie. Check Mr Google.

I think the song you might be looking for is Woody Guthrie's The Dying Miner. It has:

  Dear sisters and brothers goodbye,
  Dear mother and father goodbye.
My fingers are weak and I cannot write,
  Goodbye Centralia, goodbye.

We don't seem to have a copy here on Mudcat (at a quick look), but there are plenty online eg: The Dying Miner from Pete Seeger (leoslyrics).

It has all the bits you mention except the coat catching fire; what it has is:

Way down in this tunnel of coal,
Gas caught fire from somebody's lamp.

But I'm pretty sure this is what you're looking for.

Mick

Terrific response. I think I may have learned a version of this that Pete Seeger did,but it is definitely the right song. I have tried to remember this each time there is a mine disaster. Thanks.

Is Mudcat's a wonderful thing.
I'm sure if you look you will find that
It has the words you want to sing!
It's bouncy, Flouncy,Trouncy,Pouncy
Mad mad mad mad mad.
We find the words right,
Like some shining white knight,
We're a lyrics Galahad!

Sorry, the poster's name just started me off. I'll go and get my medication.

.... Boing! ..... Boing! .... Boing! ....   .. .
