Must be somewhere originally. Derek and Dorothy Elliott use to sing this ~ music hall no doubt!

According to the Roud index Jim Carroll (who posts here) recorded it from Walter Pardon. I don't know if this was released commercially,

It's also on this recording (listed in Roud too):Helions Bumpstead Gramophone Company NLCD 8 :Comic Songs of the Stour Valley. There's some information about this on their website:HBGC - The Finest Meal I Ever Ate. The singer is Horry White.

The British Library sounds has a copy: Hang me please on a gooseberry tree. This was recorded by John Howson in Cornwall at The Ship, Wadebridge from Tommy Morrisey and Charlie Pitman. A quick search on Veteran's site suggests it wasn't released (at least not by them).

I dont think I have Walter Pardon singing this. Problem I had with BL was they need an College or institutional ref to access the recordings. I tried Yorkshire Garland but they dont know me

Mick Pearce... that link is bamfoozelated (technical term)

http://http%3A%2F%2Fsounds.bl.uk%2FView.aspx%3Fitem%3D025M-C1034X0224XX-2300V0.xml&ei=6q6tTuPPJ9Cf8gO1kbiLCw&usg=AFQjCNG6jGLwRpZDftMqr4Rq4iQTIeKldw&cad=rja

I can often sort those out and edit them to work, but that one stumps me.

PM me your name and address and I'll send you a recording of this made in the Bell in Standlake, Oxfordshire, in the mid 60's. I dont have the name of the singer to hand but he was the landlord of the pub as far as I can remember.

Wouldn't normally do that Bill - normally I'd take the address from the site, but when I was doing the search the BL was having problems with their server and I must have just closed it down and taken the google link. Here's the direct one: Hang me please on a gooseberry tree.

In the US, a gooseberry bush is not tall enough to hang laundry, much less a person.

Perhaps that is why this is humorous?

I'm pretty certain Jim Eldon recorded it, probably Walter's version. Jim certainly sings it. I'm sure I've seen it on a broadside. Try the Bodl.

It sounds like a waste of space.
In my experience it is much better to hang from a mature deciduous tree

In your EXPERIENCE?

Say it isn't so.

Yes, we did record it from Walter Pardon and it is deposited at the National Sound Archive at The British Library with the rest of our collection (don't know if it's accessible on line).
I don't think it has been released commercially, I can't recall it being on any of Mike Yates' albums of Walter.
Personally, it's a song I'm not entirely comfortable with and would think twice before passing it on (I think this is the only song in our collection I feel this way about) - otherwise you would be very welcome to it.

Our gooseberry bush (far from a tree) isn't very tall, so you couldn't hang from it and very prickly, so it would be very painful trying. I don't know the song but I'm guessing it can't be serious.

I must have missed the WP track as I have vinyl and CDs of a great deal from MT and others

Yes of course a Gooseberry Bush (not Tree) and of course that is the whole point of the song!
