Best holloween story I heard around here came from a retired Air Force Colonel we know who has a country place. He said they had close to 200 kids. Three short ones were walking up his drive, accompanied by their parents, when four deer ran in front of them, barely missing them. They came on up to the house, a little shakey, and the Colonel told them that what they really needed to watch out for was the wolves that were apt to be right behind the deer.

One year, an adult accompaning children was in a Sylvester The Cat suit. Cheucie, my ex's cat, about 15 years old and 15 pounds, with the same colour markings was on the stairwell landing watching the proceedings until I opened the door and Sylvester was five feet away. Talk about a halloween scare! Had to take the scissors to the carpet where she tore it up.

What's the best costume you have ever seen? Mine is... I was in a dance club and the costumes were amAzing. But, one - I went to light up a smoke and a fully decorated Xmas tree in a corner of the main hall reached out with a bic lighter, scared the crap outta me and went back to being a Xmas tree. I stared at it. It was perfect.

Well, it was lovely yesterday evening, the little ones came in droves with Mum, or Dad, or both, and some cute dogs on leads. Our neighbour's kitten followed everyone up our drive. The costumes were excellent. Two young lads (aged about 13)were dressed as skeletons, so polite and cheery. Little tots peeped out, a bit scared themselves. My neighbour's two lovely children came, Dracula and a witch, giggling. I was sad when no more arrived. The pumpkins have shrivelled a bit. There's always next year, and the Carol singers come at Christmas. Honestly fancy some people complaining, the sweets only cost us a couple of pounds. It's a community thing, the children love it and it delights us all.

Halloween was cancelled here in snowy southern NH. A foot of snow and no electricity for 25 miles around did the trick. Now individual towns are announcing celebrations, mostly next weekend, but some during the week. I live on a short street with few houses, so there hasn't been much traffic in the past few years on Halloween, so I'll probably just leave the lights off.

We think we had 200. It was so warm, we didn't even need a jacket. (That's the secret to a big Halloween - warm weather.) It was a lovely evening.

I'll bet he was dressed that way for a very good reason, too!

You don't have to buy costumes and stuff. A little makeup, say burnt cork lightly brushed on the cheeks, scruffy clothes, and you have an instant tramp (of the old sort). What you need is imagination.

I love the whole thing of Halloween it's fun and keeps youngsters away from tv, game consols and computers for a couple of hours. Unfortunately not one little devil darkened my door so I am left with lots of lolly pops and fairy cakes. But I do agree about the tackiness of the ready made costumes sold in most of the supermarkets now. Like fancy dress it more fun to create a look rather than buy it already made.

I`ad some of them "Trick & Treaters" in my cab last night, all dressed up in dodgy costumes with "Made in China" labels sticking out.
They said, " Quick Jim, take us `ome. We`ve `ad enough for one night."
I said, "Whassup then? I thought you all liked going round, knocking on peoples doors and asking for sweets."
They said, "We do but them mustard covered Brussels sprouts that some geezer slipped us `ad made us all sick!!"

the sooner this is abandoned the better it will be.
There is a far bigger mark up on tacky costumes in the supermarkets than on fireworks plus no expensive storage requirements. Messrs Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda aren't going to let it go away.

We didn't get anything like the numbers we had a few years ago, but we had 25 or so; one little girl (10?) was a gangster, with a slick pinstriped suit and fedora. At least 2 traditional grim reapers with scythes. Only one scream mask this time

I gave out enough full size snickers bars and kit kat bars to keep a kid on a sugar high for a month ... OMG fun ... the little ones all dressed up ... One little guy maybe three didn't wait to put it in his bag .. bit right into it ... his mom had to help him ...

What the heck, how can you not smile when a four year old looks at you and says Thank you for the candy

I put the light on after I found the candy. Not ONE more. I was out for a fourty minute walk on my dead end street... not a goblin anywhere. Oh well, that little girl's smile will have to do.

At least it's a nice night for any trick or treaters. 4C and clear and nare a stip o wind.

Porch light is on. George is at the door to greet the TorTers. Candy at hand. Last year I had 50+ and ran out of candy. This year it is 6:30 and no sign of a goblin. It can all go to work with me tomorrow. But I will be very disappointed.

One darling little girl knocked on the door while it was still light. I looked at the parents and shrugged. They called her away. I felt SO bad. I searched and found some candies... maybe old but still edible... no date... it's sugar. I waited until they came back up on the other side of the street and went out and apologized to her for not being ready while I stuffed a HUGE handful in her bag. She was excited and said thanks. Made my day.

And, (sorry) so did the fairy queen and witch (I assume mom and aunt) with the low cut costumes and big... ah... er... you know.I don't get to see tits like that very often.

I have never had a trick-or-treater in the 9 years I've lived in my apartment. Instead I go to my sister's and play - she usually gets 80-100 kids.

For years I went to Mum's and handed out treats so she wouldn't have to get that cold air blast but after having only 4 (yes... 4) kids in 2009, I gave all the treats to a neighbour that has two small children and decided to keep the light off.

It's now 5.45pm in the UK, and properly dark. The first trick-or-treaters arrived at 4.15pm, before it was even dark, and one of them didn't even have a costume. Pulled his hoodie over his head and claimed to be a zombie! Next up, though, were two little girls who looked like Disney fairytale princesses, but were apprently witches whose hats had kept blowing off.

We've got a miix of snack packs of raisins, and jelly sweets to give them. Jellies are winning hands down.

We have a "hamd of Fatima" door knocker of the kind you see all over Spain and Italy. I don't know whether you see them in the Latin countries the other side of the Atlantic. A brass hand grasping a ball. One young caller a few years ago asked nervously: "Is that a hand on your door?" I told him it was all that was left of a previous trick-or-treater.

He still came back the next year. In fact he's just been again now, dressed as a skeleton and acoompanied by what, apparently, was a "devil fairy." Eh?

Tootsie Rolls are chewy, slightly chocolate flavored sweet candy whose main function seems to be unintentional filling and crown removal.

When I was one of those little extortionists, I thought of Tootsie Rolls as fake chocolate. A cop-out by victims who just didn't really care. The bastards!

I wonder whether the parents of these children practising blackmail (as Richard mentioned) and begging tell them what "Halloween" (All Hallows Eve)was originally about; honoring the saints and praying for the recently departed. What I see now with increasing, tatty commercialism, promoted over many years, is something totally alien to Britain. Guy Fawkes night and "Penny for the Guy", yes but the sooner this is abandoned the better it will be.

Trick or Treat is an American import, and I dislike it intensely, as it gives the nastier little buggers carte blanche to terrorise old people, and pick on folks they don't like.
Luckily it's kept to friends and family in our village, and people like ourselves who are incomers, and have no kids, get left alone.

One day I was washing my car, and a 4-year-old asked me if I was a kidnapper. I said, "No, I'm your neighbor." It seemed to be new concept.

Love it! My neighbours have put a little family of pumpkins outside, Ma, Pa and lots of babies, really sweet. We have two, Mr and Mrs Pumpkin. Last evening my other neighbour brought her two toddlers in their pyjamas and dressing gowns to see all the pumpkins before they went to bed! We've got the treats ready for tonight. Last year there were quite a few teenagers, all superbly costumed and very polite. The little ones got a bit of a shock at my husbands jet-black face. He certainly doesn't need a mask! It's all such fun.

We haven't had many in the past few years, but our light will be on and the treats by the door, ready to hand out. I know for sure our grandson, Morgan, will be by, first thing. He may even bring one of the dogs in a ninja dog costume.:-)

I love Halloween. It's my fav. holiday!

Bremen always has it on Thursday so thi year we had it LAST thursday and the weather was brisk but the rain had stopped and it was beautiful out. As always we had about 350 kids, all well behaved and most accompanied by some family member. There are times it is wonderful to live somewhere small away from the city that still thinks its 1954.............

We have a string of purple lights, a string of orange lights, and a little white ghost on the porch.

We always enjoy it.

one of my most favorite times giving out treats to the kids ...

hope the weather holds out for them.
here if your porch light is on, they will come visit but if you are annoyed with the kids then keep your light out .. I never have any problems with anyone doing property damage yada yada .. small towns are nice places since a person knows everyone
