We took our two kitties to the vet the other day and I began singing them this lullaby on the way back home. It's not particularly brilliant but it seemed to amuse them (copy and paste into WORD/TIME/12 to line up chords:

Words by Charles Ipcar, © 2011
Tune: after traditional "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush"

Two Kitties Put Out to Sea

C----------------------G-C
Two kitties put out to sea
-----G-----------C------G--C
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
-----------------------G--C
Two kitties put out to sea,
----G----------C----G-----C
To see what they could see.

And one was known as Calico Jack,
Calico Jack, an old shellback,
An old shellback who was never slack,
As he sailed the Seven Seas.

And the other was Coal Black Rose,
Coal Black Rose from toes to nose;
From toes to nose she was disposed
To sail the Seven Seas.

Now they sailed up and they sailed down,
They sailed down and round and round;
They sailed round and round and round
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

And they nabbed many a flying fish,
Flying fish, so dainty a dish,
As dainty a dish as they might wish,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

They sailed to an island most remote,
And island remote in their old catboat,
In an old catboat, sailed those cutthroats,
Across the Seven Seas.

And there they found at first daylight,
At first daylight – feline delight;
Feline delight with birds of flight,
Across the Seven Seas.

And many a bold mouse met his fate,
Met his fate as he was ate,
As he was ate without a plate,
Across the Seven Seas.

When the birds and mice were no more,
They sailed away from that fair shore,
From that fair shore they so adored,
Back cross the Seven Seas.

Two kitties put out to sea
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
Two kitties put out to sea,
To see what they could see.

The two cats in question are a Maine calico cooncat and a black long-haired Burmese. Their given names are Tejitu and Tilahun but they do have their pirate moments.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Here's some wording changes and a modal tune:

Two Kitties Put Out to Sea-2

Am---G--C--G--Am
Two kit-ties put out to sea
-----G------------------Am-G
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
Am---G--C--G--Am
Two kit-ties put out to sea,
----G----------------------Am
To see what they could see.

And one was known as Calico Jack,

When the birds and mice were no more,
Were no more on that fair shore,
From that fair shore they sailed once more,
Back cross the Seven Seas.

Two kitties put out to sea
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
Two kitties put out to sea,
To see what they could see.

Here's a bit of a wording change for the fishy verse:

And then they nabbed some flying fish,
Flying fish, a dainty dish,
A dainty dish as they might wish,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

And some changes to the next to last verse:

When the birds and mice were no more,
Were no more on that fair shore,
From that fair shore they sailed once more,
Back across the Seas.

This will make a nice addition to my forthcoming CD titled Animals at Sea.

Charley Noble

Well, Capt. Kit has been added to the pack and there have been some new verses added to this evolving saga:

Words and tune by Charles Ipcar, 11/1/2011

Three Kitties Put Out to Sea

Am----G--C--G--Am
Three kit-ties put out to sea
-----G------------------Am-G
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
Am----G--C--G--Am
Three kit-ties put out to sea
----G----------------------Am
To see what they could see.

And one was known as Calico Jack,
Calico Jack, an old shellback;
An old shellback who was never slack,
As he sailed the Seven Seas.

And then there was Coal Black Rose,
Coal Black Rose from nose to toes;
From nose to toes she was disposed
To sail the Seven Seas.

And up aloft was Captain Kit,
Captain Kit, spyglass in mitt;
The crows in the crows nest had a fit,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

And many a sea rat met his fate,
Met his fate as he was ate;
As he was ate without a plate,
Upon the Seven Seas.

They nabbed many a flying fish,
Flying fish, a dainty dish;
A dainty dish, as they might wish,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

Then one fine day a sail they spied,
A sail they spied as they drew nigh;
As they drew nigh "Ahoy!" they cried,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

But that bark was crewed by scurvy dogs,
Who snarled and snapped all agog;
So they fired a broadside and called for grog,
And sank them in the sea.

They sailed to an island most remote,
Most remote, in their old catboat;
In their old catboat, sailed those cutthroats,
Across the Seven Seas.

And there they found at first daylight,
At first daylight – feline delight;
Feline delight with birds of flight,
Across the Seven Seas.

They dined on birds and eggs galore,
Eggs galore on that fair shore;
From that fair shore they sailed once more,
Back across the Seven Seas.

Three kitties put out to sea
Put out to sea, put out to sea;
Three kitties put out to sea,
To see what they could see.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It's delightful, Charley!

I made up a tune as I went along, which wasn't even identical from verse to verse since I was winging it. So naturally I wondered, what's your melody?

My mature eyesight wants the cats in the pix to be bigger. For example with Capt. Kit I am still not sure what I'm looking at. With something this fanciful there is no need to be concerned with keeping in the vicinity of realistic scale. In other words, cats that are much too big in relation to the ship (compared to reality) is just fine. For me anyhow.

Again, delightful. And a welcome break from my NaNoWriMo-ing. Thanks!

Crowhugger-

The tune has shifted from major to minor since I started this thread. It began something like "Ring Around the Rosies" and now is more like "The Reaper's Ghost." I'll record a version after Christmas but, who knows, maybe your tune would work better.

My mother agrees with you that the kitty crew should be larger scale. That's possible, given the original images I have. I'm still mulling that over. The web-based images are of course dumbed down. Capt. Kitt is a bit hard to make out because he is all curled up. I may do some bigger blow-ups with the "telescope" instead of changing the scale.

Thanks for the feed-back.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I'm now working on the illustration for the Isle of Feline Delight.

The lyrics have been slightly revised and now look like this:

Words and tune by Charles Ipcar and Dahlov Ipcar, 11/1/2011

Three Kitties Set Out to Sea

Am----G--C--G--Am
Three kit-ties set out to sea
-----G------------------Am-G
Set out to sea, set out to sea;
Am----G--C--G--Am
Three kit-ties set out to sea
----G----------------------Am
To see what they could see.

And one was known as Calico Jack,
Calico Jack, an old shellback;
An old shellback who was never slack,
As he sailed the Seven Seas.

And then there was Coal Black Rose,
Coal Black Rose from nose to toes;
From nose to toes she was disposed
To sail the Seven Seas.

And up aloft was Captain Kitt,
Captain Kitt, spyglass in mitt;
The crows in the crows nest had a fit,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

And many a sea rat met his fate,
Met his fate as he was ate;
As he was ate without a plate,
Upon the Bold Catspaw.

They nabbed many a flying fish,
Flying fish, a dainty dish;
As dainty a dish, as they might wish,
As they sailed the Seven Seas.

Then one fine day a sail they spied,
A sail they spied an' they drew nigh;
As they drew nigh "Ahoy!" they cried,
"Who sails the Seven Seas?"

That caravel was crewed by scurvy dogs,
Who snarled and snapped all agog;
So they fired a broadside an' called for grog,
And sank them in the sea.

They sailed onto an isle remote,
An isle remote, in their old catboat;
In their old catboat, sailed those cutthroats,
To that sandy shore.

And there they found at first daylight,
At first daylight – feline delight;
Feline delight, bright birds at flight,
Upon that jungle isle.

They dined on birds and eggs galore,
Eggs galore on that fair shore;
From that fair shore they sailed once more,
Back across the Seas.

Three kitties set out to sea
Set out to sea, set out to sea;
Three kitties set out to sea,
To see what they could see.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The illustrations have been developing apace since my last post here in my Facebook album. Here's a public link to the album: Click here for PIXS

I'm still looking for a few good photos of snarling and snapping dogs for crewing the ill-fated ship of scurvy dogs, if you'd like to share. However, be assured that no dogs, sea rats, flying fish or birds were harmed in the production of this songbook.

I think the illustrations are pretty much complete, with just a little more editing. Here's a link to my album on Facebook: click here for PIXS

I believe it is a public link but Facebook keeps changing and it may only work for my 502 friends and family. I'd appreciate it if someone who is not yet my "Facebook friend" gave the link a try.

Excellent! I was thinking that it was a "public link" but there are always changes evolving on Facebook, some of which I find useful and some which I find frustrating.

Jeri-

Thanks for changing the thread title to clarify that Capt. Kitt had joined Calico Jack and Coal-Black Rose in the ship's crew. Capt. Kitt isn't much of a captain but she's a great cook.

The plot line and the illustrations continue to evolve in this adventurous tale of three kitties who set out to sea: click here for updates

There's a new flag of a lion rampant waving a cutlass on the foremast, the BBQ pit has new life, and the small dog who was lookout on the scurvy dogs' ship was rescued after it was sunk and has joined the crew aboard the Bold Catspaw.

I should be showing the layout to a children's book publisher in Maine this week and find out what the professions think. Anyway, it's been a whole lot of fun.

Oh, here's the new verse:

And one small dog was found afloat,
Afloat on the waves as the cats did note,
So they fished him up, dried out his coat,
And sailed on across the Seas.

Charley Noble

Good song, Charley. As the snobbishly-treated employee of two tortoiseshell cats, I can relate.

And they relate big time! They're already getting on their cutlasses and sea boots, AARGH.

Thanks, Bob, and my regards to your employers.

I did have some thoughts of a giant squid attacking the ship as a final illustration but the three kitties vetoed that dramatic episode. They have no taste for calamari.

Cats is cats!

I doubt if the cats were able to catch any of the macaws or other parrots but the fate of the black jungle fowl on the ground is no doubt sanguine. I don't think there is a supermarket on the jungle isle.

The BBQ flames were captured from a photo from my revisit a couple of years ago to Ethiopia. In that instance it was goat being barbecued rather than fowl.

I think it still needs to be presented a little brisker and with more expression but that's what I'm working with.

Good work, Charley! Hmm, after rereading the lyrics and seeing the name of the ship again, I looked back at the list of 'Catters who have commented on this thread. Conspicuous in his absence is Spaw!

"Conspicuous in his absence is Spaw!"

So true. Maybe if I had developed a set of illustrations focused on the function of the "cat-head" he would have shown more interest.
