I too will show my age by remembering those early skiffle days with Lonnie and so many others... I had an older brother who bought skiffle records and of course I HAD to listen to them too while he played them on his gramophone while I tried to get to sleep - no choice, we shared the same bedroom. I had forgotten all about Six Five Special. By the time I was 13-14 I started to play the guitar and it was definitely the early influence of Lonnie and others such as Wally Whyton and the Vipers etc that got me started. Threads like this leave me soggy with nostalgia ....

Yes ,Big Nige , I was there too, sitting up on the hill at The Arena , and listening to Lonnie's much deeper and mature voice growling "You like the old banjo, don't yer ?" --- it was an enjoyably nostalgic experience , and thankfully he DIDN'T sing " My Old Man's A Dustman " !And I do remember his appearances on "The Six Five Special" ; I was ten or eleven then , I think .Thanks for the music, Lonnie.

I saw him at Sidmouth Folk Festival about 18 months before he died, and he was absolutely brilliant, sang like he was back in the sixties, full range, power, volume, so glad I managed to see the man that changed my life.

for those Brits old enough to remember here's Lonnie on the old BBC TV programme 6.5 Special presented by Josephine Douglas and (initially) disc jockey Pete Murray. It ran from 16 February 1957 to 27 December 1958

Lonnie Donegan - Grand Coulee Dam

I have only just realised that it was 9 years ago today that lonnie passed away. Only realised through his wife's FB account.

Strange that today, I have been watching youtube videos of Lonnie and didn't realise.

You are still in our thoughts.
