Subject: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 04 Nov 11 - 07:11 AM 'BS: Are Those Moaning Minnies At It Again?' I think they are.. :0) They're all running to teacher, "Please, Miss! PLEASE, Miss!! Those awful people from the BS section want to ruin our Music Section! Zap 'em, Miss! ZAP 'em!" So, let me get this straight then...the people who run to teacher to complain, get their way. Yet those of us who simply let things be, no matter what gets said, occasionally responding, get to not have a say? And this is Democracy? |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Nov 11 - 07:22 AM I noticed the absence of BS when the 'cat first came back, and a few minutes later found a note at the bottom of the thread list saying the BS section is "under maintenance - 1 week" Patience. John |

From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 04 Nov 11 - 07:34 AM I have my tent ready, bobad... ;0) And, I've spoken to the ex-Dean of St. Paul's who told me that so long as the entrance to this thread is clearly marked, the Musicy Ones will be Safe from entering into it by mistake, thus protecting their Health....therefore, it's Legal. 'Occupy Mudcat' begins..... (chuckling gently smiley, whilst hiding under the desk so Max can't find me) ;0) |

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Max Date: 04 Nov 11 - 07:41 AM I'm gettin calls left and right now having bought other99.com 7 years ago. This protest crap has given it value. Guys, need no BS for one week. No threads up here, its a database thing. We're switching to a new server and splitting it in half. This is the music half and I don't want to have to clean it up. Think we can manage? |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 04 Nov 11 - 07:44 AM Yes, we can manage..just. :0) x |

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:00 AM Hi Max - I'm a bit confused. I've never set my preferences to separate the BS from the Above the Line stuff. I like to see all that's going on and make my own decision about what is worth ignoring. The opening forum page I see has about 35 BS: prefix threads showing, and they open when clicked. I am not seeing evidence of any "Closed Sign" on the BS section as far as my browser and mudcat user settings are concerned. Having seen this thread I'm not going to accidentally (or deliberately) dump my trash in the middle of your spring cleaning, but I am sure I'm not the only one with same browser settings. Perhaps you could give advice? Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: nutty Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:02 AM It never ceases to amaze me how, after all these years of successfully running Mudcat, people still question Max's motives and actions. Trust him. support him - he's got us this far he won't give up easily. Thanks Max - without Mudcat life would lack an important dimension. |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: artbrooks Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:03 AM If possible, please reset BS at N+1 day when it goes back up, so that the currently active threads are still visible...not that some of them don't deserve to go away. |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Max Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:07 AM And listen, I know this is going to be a challenge and before you ask, no you can't just have one thread or this thread. NoCando. And I get frustrated when I try to tell someone they shouldn't talk politics or can't have a BS thread or whatever I have to tell people and things to keep this place ticking and hear complaints about not being allowed to do what they want. "Oh, man no BS threads, so unfair. This place is not fair." I get frustrated because that I HAD to give all that up myself to run this site. I can't make political statements or argue my opinions, participate in some of the more colorful threads, there's lots of reindeer games I cannot play because of my associations and keeping mudcat.org free from slants or bias or accusation or freedom and a fair and open site. I gave all of it up for you... forever. Invented something that prevents him from doing what he invented it for. Genius I am. Oh and the other great irony is that I started this site to befriend members of the industry, and its actually alienated me globally, complaints and spats and claims on 3 continents. Invented the poison pill for everything I love. My work here is done. Which kind of proves our neutrality. when opposing political parties fight here, they both end up hating me. Every single time. So surely every once in a while take a break, or do without or whatever I may need or ask of you? Huh? |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: GUEST,saulgoldie Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:11 AM I think we can appreciate what Max does, and just live without BS for a week. Maybe we'll actually do more discussing of music and lore. Quel horeurs! Saul |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:15 AM How soon we forget. BS is a relatively new thing anyway, and the threads always used to be mixed in together. No BS, try making a music reolated post then! |
Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Max Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:15 AM Music threads will be kept tidy, I know you'll accuse me of censorship and father-raping by the end of the week, but we are slaves to the data. Can't say that everything will be as free this next week as we go through these upgrades. We do the very best we can. If you the best that you can too, we should all be just super. |

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Musket Date: 04 Nov 11 - 08:59 AM If I said BS was closed for urgent Bridge repairs in this thread, would the thread be taken down like the last one questioning where BS was? (Come on, might be the only witty thing I have said all year.) Hey Max! If I can't educate my friend through BS, I may have to resort to driving south and shouting through his letterbox at him, and that would never do.... One week.. Who'll crack up first? Me or that banjo playing penguin having a bath in the middle of my study whilst sunbathing in the rain?

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 04 Nov 11 - 09:13 AM The BS threads can be accessed through posting histories, and new posts seem to be allowed. Would doing that cause problems? |

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: katlaughing Date: 04 Nov 11 - 11:58 AM Most of you remind me of my 8 yr old grandson, who doesn't believe it when I tell him something. He has to test me with several different ways of asking for whatever I've already nixed/asked him to do/stop/etc. He gets put in TIME OUT for excessive arguing/pestering/doing something he's been told not to. If you really can't stand it without BS, go join the Mudcat Facebook group and have fun, but leave Max alone and, as someone else said, TRUST HIM. Otherwise, go sit in the time out corner! kat |

Subject: RE: Why can't we have a BS thread here? From: Dan Schatz Date: 04 Nov 11 - 01:15 PM Max, thank you for everything you've done and are doing for all of us. You have created a community. Sure, it's sometimes a messy, cranky, opinionated community, but what authentic community isn't? It's also a loving, giving, educating, funny, and caring community. I'm not on the Mudcat every day (how do you people find the time?) and I only look at the BS threads occasionally (see time comment, above), but still I know the Mudcat is responsible for some of the truly amazing parts of my life over the last few years. I've made wonderful friends through the Mudcat, either indirectly, or directly, because they started coming to the Getaway. It was a thread on the Mudcat about benefit concerts for Utah Phillips that started me thinking about a CD, and it's no accident that 8 of the tracks on the CD are performed by Mudcatters. For that matter, Max hosts the Digital Tradition. I was an early contributor to that, before their was a Mudcat, and I still go back to it on a regular basis. Half the time if I do a Google search for lyrics to any given song, it takes me right back here. So thank you, Max. Thank you for what you've done and what you're doing. Thanks for putting up with all of us when we're cranky and thank you for providing a space for us to connect in better ways than that. And thank you, most of all, for the the seemingly tireless energy you put into creating, maintaining, and improving this wonderful haven for folk nerds (face it folks, that's what we are). And by the way - I loved "Monkey's Wedding" on the new CD collection. Dan |
