Subject: Boiling old strings
From: kendall
Date: 07 Nov 11 - 10:16 AM

Many years ago I heard about rejuvenating old dead strings by boiling them. I thought it was a hoax. Well, it's not. The low E on Jacqui's Apollo 6 string was dead. When I plucked it it just went "thump", no life at all, so I took it off, scrubbed it with a soapy scouring pad (Not steel wool), rinsed it, dried it, put it back on and it sounds new.

Any comments?

Well, at least you are doing it right by taking them off the guitar first....if only I could have my time over again...

Mmm... must try this on parts of me that need rejuvenating. Might need the steel wool though...

Just loosen the string and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol (if you don't need it for internal consumption). That will clean off all the gunk, and extend the life of the strings.

Its not just the dirt and oil from the fingers, if you rub you hand on the bottom you can feel where the strings flatten out against the fret.

A 'faff' is an unnecessary commotion or fuss, like a kerfuffle.

Don't you clowns ever try something just for the hell of it?

Jacqui and I had a gig on Sunday and that string just had to go. No music stores were open, so I tried that old remedy and it worked. When I get damn good and ready I'll replace the whole set, then I'll post it and you can all sleep better!:-)

Dan, I know it's like putting a $40.00 saddle on a $10.00 horse, but what could I do? I couldn't buy one on Sunday.

Strings become flat on one side? Just turn them over and Bob's your kerfuffle.

I can't imagine Oscar Wilde ever encountered Morris dancing......

Any time you clean the gunk off strings (dirt, dust, skin oil, rosin), they natually will be more reverberant but when they're truly dead, they're truly dead.

Kendall, I've boiled a few sets in my time. It is the only thing to do if you need a string. Even today, and even when I have a spare set of strings, I keep old but still serviceable strings in my guitar case. Ya just never know.

Let me know when they get thuddy again

I tried boiling guitar strings many years ago, but I finally gave up on the idea. It didn't matter how long I boiled them, they were still too tough to eat.

You can do that with banana peels too, but it doesn't seem to help much. They still taste awful.

I used to boil guitar strings, to save money. Got the idea from Eddie Van Halen, of all people.

Helps tremendously to put in a bay leaf.

It may be of some help.

Luckily, I'm in a better financial position now.

In some cases, one might consider boiling old guitar players (as a public service)

in my opinion it is better to slacken the string right down, then get a chamois leather or duster and by use of friction rejuvenate the string, by rubbing, it works in my experience as well as boilng them

Strings become flat on one side?
Reminds me I used to buy strings which were flat on all sides, not flatwound but roundwound then ground flat. I'd forgotten those. I guess they went the way of Eldorado Ice Cream.
I didn't find boiling strings worth the effort.
