Sorry to be the bearer of bad news , but I have this evening received this e-mail from someone close to him:

THE GREAT JACKIE LEVEN

Please excuse the rather impersonal round robin e-mail. Sometimes, you have to tell people about the Bad, as well as the Good. It is with a heavy heart, therefore, that I have to relate the sad news that the great Scottish singer-songwriter JACKIE LEVEN is gravely ill, suffering from cancer, and, in all candour, has only a few days to live.

In a career stretching over forty years, Jackie Leven has carved an impressive reputation as a uniquely gifted singer-songwriter. From his emergence as leader of the underrated DOLL BY DOLL in the seventies, through well documented addiction problems which Leven overcame with remarkable strength of will, culminating in a solo resurgence through the 1980s to the here and now, Jackie has amassed an amazing body of work – the composer of over four hundred songs, including arguably his greatest song – 'Call Mother', from the album 'Mystery of Love' (ranked by Q magazine as one of '100 Best Albums of All Time'.

If sales didn't always reflect the overwhelmingly positive critical reception his albums received, he nonetheless remained a perceptive writer and performer. Jackie was imbued with a restless creativity, and always searching for new settings for his ruminative lyrical forays, laced with humour and melodic grace. As a performer, Jackie could enthral and entrance the audience with picaresque tales taken from first-hand experience.

Those that have worked with Jackie will know of his mordant wit and very idiosyncratic world view. His latest release, Wayside Shrines and The Code of the Travelling Man, recorded with multi-instrumentalist Michael Cosgrave was yet more proof of Leven's enduring talent and inexhaustible creative energies.

I've seen Jackie live 4 or 5 times. These are concerts I treasure.
To say Jackie is one of my favourite Singer/songwriters is an understatement. He's written more songs that are favourites of mine than I probably deserve!
My thoughts go to Jackie, Deborah and all their family and friends.

Only saw him live once (at the upstairs room at Manchester Uni students union) and it was a bit special. Loved the Doll by Doll albums. Hope he gets well soon.

One of my favourite songwriters, and a real troubadour. Get well soon, Jackie. Hope to still see you at The Lexington in Pentonville on Dec 2.

I was hoping to get to see him in Derby a fortnight ago but couldn't make it.......didn't know that his tour had been cancelled.
Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus frequently plays his favourite singers Dick Gaughan, John Martyn and Jackie Leven.
Certainly hope for a speedy recovery.

I hope he'll be OK. Doll by Doll's first two albums more or less saved my life - extraordinary stuff. I haven't heard much of Jackie Leven's stuff since he made his comeback, but he's definitely one of the good guys. I've got his "Keys to the Forest" lined up for inclusion in 52fs in a few weeks' time - think La Belle Dame Sans Merci meets Trainspotting...

I heard him only the other day on Desert Island Discs Revisited. Ian Rankin chose one of his songs.
Let's hope for the best for him.

Just got the message from mutual mate Jo Shaw who used to play guitar with him in 'Doll by Doll'. It sounds like he's very ill indeed. We're all thinking of him. He's one of the three or four greatest singers I've ever had the privilege to know and a major influence.

Please could you all send some of your mudcat good wishes to Jackie Leven who is in hospital with a nasty infection. Fans are trying to do something 'Leven' everyday & I thought my bit for today would be to ask for your help. He was unwell & cancelled his latest tour, ended up in hospital for an opertation, went home & has had to be readmitted.
Anyone who knows Jackies material will know he is not folk but CelticBlues (he gave me that discription some years ago at Beverly Folk Festival)but I consider him one of the best Singer/songwriters around today.
Further imformation on his facebook page.
Thank you
Cathy
