He was mentioned more than once--and one of his songs sung--at a memorial celebration for Craig Johnson this past Saturday night in the Washington, DC, area. Art, your name was mentioned too--for providing Lisa Null with the words to one of Craig's songs, which she sang beautifully.

There was a time I'd jump in the car and be there in 3 hours or so.
The more things change, the more they get different.

Be sure to give Jay my salutations.

GUEST, there seems to be much confusion about how to spell TITTABAWASSEE er/or TITABAWASSEE. I put both spellings in Google and got several listings of the river under both spellings. Hmmmmmmmmm?

I don't think Jay has any recorded material. Not studio material, anyway. There may be a soundtrack for the musical he wrote floating around, or maybe some home recordings. I also have DAT tapes of his last show at the ark, but I havent' gotten around to editing them to a CD yet. Mick: I live in the big city of Stockbridge. (30 minutes northwest of ann arbor)

I would love a tape and will PM you my snail mail addy. But didn't Jay record some stuff?

All the best,

Mick

I see Jay from time to time in Ann Arbor. I ran into him at the Tap Room in Ypsilanti at an open mic night, and after a little badgering, he sang about four songs. (alone and acoustic) Luckily, I recorded them. I gave Jay a copy, I suppose if you want one you can PM me with an e-mail address, and I'll send you the MP3's.

In the last verse of "Tittabawassee Jane", that should read "air"-------not "sir".

Sorry,

Subject: Lyr Add: TITTABAWASSEE JANE (Jay Stielstra)
From: Art Thieme
Date: 22 Apr 02 - 06:44 PM

TITTABAWASSEE JANE
by Jay Stielstra (as I learned it from Craig Johnson)

I met her in Midland, Michigan,
A quarter of a century ago,
She loved me down by the edge of town,
Where the Tittabawassee flowed.

CHORUS)
She's my Tittabawassee Janne's her name,
Tittabawassee Jane,
The river there must be named after her,
She's my Tittabawassee jane.

She worked at the Midland chemical plant,
I waited for her shift to end,
She made napalm -- or some kind of bomb,
But I wasn't too political then.

Art Thieme

She's my...

The air it smelled like kerosene,
Or whatever Dow pumped out,
And the river was laced with lumps of waste
Called Tittabawassee trout.

She's my...

Now, I haven't been back in 25 years,
But the company magazine,
Says the air blows fresh in Midland, Mich
And the Tittabawassee's clean.

Well, I don't wanna tell you what to believe,
But Dow's been known to lie,
And I don't care what they do to the air
But the Tittabawassee's mine.

She's my Tittabawassee Jane's her name,
Tittabawassee Jane,
The river there must be named after her,
Tittabawassee Jane.

Subject: Grand Marais: Jay Stielstra
From: GUEST

GRAND MARAIS by Jay Stielstra ( Art Thieme, learned from Craig Johnson)

I remember her from another day,
A clever little girl that I knew in Grand Marais,
I was just passin' through-a free & easy liver,
She didn't know what she wanted--there 'tweren't nothin' I could give her.

But we swam without our clothes in Lake Superior's waters,
Played the tavern jukebox--still 6 songs for a quarter,
But she could not get free from all those fatal forces,
And waitin' around for me seemed like wasting her resources.

Eventually she got married to a jackpine savage,
He was no worse or better than the average,
Now she's only 25 & already's got 4 babies.
And in a sportsman's bar he calls her his old lady.

Can she bake a cherry pie, Billy boy, Billy boy,
Can she bake a cherry pie, charmin' Billy?
She can bake a cherry pie,
Read a movie magazine,
And she keeps her house remarkably clean

But she never skinny dips or drinks wine from a bottle,
She spends her spare time at her snowmobile throttle,
But I remember her from another day,
A clever little girl that I knew in Grand Marais.

Subject: Bank Beaver Lament: Jay Stielstra
From: GUEST
Date: 22 Apr 02 - 01:12 PM

"the song"
(original title "Lament for Jim Baker",
now know as "Bank Beaver Lament")

Will the whippoorwill call by the river tonight
and the big trout rise to the fly;
will old friends gather in the campfire light
as we have in the years gone by?
Will we talk small as we always have done
and pretend to change not a thing?
Will one of us there strum the guitar
and pick out a song to sing?

Oh the Manistee River runs through Deward
and the Manistee runs through Sharon;
she flows I know when we're thinking of love
and she flows when nobody's caring.

Will she run clear as Stolichnaya
from the yellow trees to the ranch;
will the beer stay cold in the Mecum Bar
when the mayflies rise to dance?

Will the weather be as unpredictable
and the fishing as well the same;
will we carry on as we always have done
and scarcely mention his name?

Oh the Manistee River runs through Deward
and the Manistee runs through Sharon;
she flows I know when we're thinking of love
and she flows when nobody's caring.

Will the solitary mink hunt on her bank
and the coyotes sing out tonight;
will bank beavers gather at their favorite hole
in the late June's warm twilight?

Will the Manistee River give us a nod
to show that she really knows
we're weaker and fewer this year by one
and trying to not let it show.

Oh the Manistee River runs through Deward
and the Manistee runs through Sharon;
she flows I know when we're thinking of love
and she flows when nobody's caring.

Harp,

I used to have a cassette of Jay's songs--but it disappeared a while back.

You've heard his "TITTABAWASSEE JANE", right? I learned it and "GRAND MARAIS" from Craig Johnson---also wrote wondrous songs about Mihigan's Upper Peninsula.

Jay's doing fine. He recently sang at the Ark's anniversary shindig, and was kind enough to send me (at my request) a tape of one of the songs he included in his presentation: a great song called "The Road Less Travelled" which includes the line "I took the road less travelled, and now I'm really lost!" I'll have to dig up his address from the files downstairs, but I'll send it to you early next week. We'll be in Boston over the weekend, doing a "giggle" (small gig) for the Greater Boston Folk Song Society. Hope you can wait until we get home.

Sandy
