Here it comes again!

The monthly shanty, forebitter, and ballad session is coming up this Saturday, November 19th, at The Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH (USA), 3:30 - 7:30 PM.

See you there!

Linn (and Tom, who is busy cooking dinner)

I'll be there and Nor sounded interested in coming with me the last time I talked with him. Maybe we can get Dick to come as well.

ChanteyLass, hope to see you one of these days!

It can be combined with the previous night's weekly Press Room session, a melee of songs and tunes in the tradition (mostly English, Scots, Irish, and sea music, but you never know what might come up).

Or come by during the last full weekend in September for the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival -- PMFF

The Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival looks wonderful, but it conflicts with the New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival!

The idea of two nights of music sounds good, too, but my car's not young and on Thursday night my RI state pension got reformed! It will be a while before I start feeling a pinch, but I will have to think more carefully about entertainment and travel.

I'll keep reading this thread, and like I said, someday . . . .

There were about 12 singers gathered at the Press Room yesterday. Another really nice session, slower paced, and everyone had an opportunity to sing several songs.

I got to try singing my new blues version of the Kipling poem "Mulholland's Contract" about the sailor in charge of the lower deck of a cattleboat, and several other songs, old or new to me in different stages of polished presentation.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Not sure when I'll get the song list posted, but maybe I should start with who our accomplices were yesterday --

Tom (Curmudgeon) and I (Bat Goddess) were there, of course. Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Ernie Pigeon (NbptErnie), Don Hale, Martha Burns and another of the Gloucester crew whose name I don't know, Jeri, Chris Maden, Marty Stock (Bupkes), Barry O'Brien, Steve Smith, Justine Donovan, Chris Vaughn, and Phyllis Richard-Sloat (for a little while).

Smallish group, but very vocal, both in singing and in discussing the songs.

Song list...well, at some point. (It's going to be one of those weeks...)

Nice to be reminded of the names of who was there. The other fellow from the Gloucester area was Ray Spiecker.

Charley Noble

That was Martha Bowen (not Burns) up from Gloucester, who writes songs, and who rekindled my interest in Charlie O'Hegarty's songs. Here's a link to Charlie's Memorial web site, which has some of his songs available too.

Marty-

Thanks for the link to O'Hegarty's memorial site. I was only familiar with his nautical recordings, not the person.

Charley Noble

My "written this morning" song went over like a ton of bricks on a lead balloon named "Titanic". I think people expected a serious song and got some awkward-for-a-serious-song terms and wacky alliteration. "Water fell like rain"? Really? Or maybe it just sucked. Funny--my voice was relatively OK, then I got home and it went south again.

(I fixed a song title of mine and the spelling of somebody else's. Been workin' at the test scoring mines all day and I wanna correct some shit.)

Jeri-

I'd like to hear your song again. It usually takes several singings of a new song to work out all its kinks, and for others to figure out what you are doing.

I bet hardly anyone has a clue what the new song I launched, Mulholland's Contract, was about. And I haven't got a clue of how well it might work at this point, only that it interests me.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
