Applications to perform at Celtic Connections 2013, as part of Spotlight England, are open.

Spotlight England is a groundbreaking new initiative that seeks to raise the international profile of English folk music and its musicians. Created in collaboration with renowned music festival Celtic Connections – who has invited England to be its international partner in 2013 – Spotlight England offers six artists the chance to perform in front of over 200 international music industry delegates at a special showcase at the festival in 2013. With assembled delegates including venues, promoters and festival directors from as far afield as Europe, North America and Australia, Spotlight England represents an invaluable opportunity to present English folk music as a distinct and thriving genre to rival any traditional music around the world.

Applications are sought from established musicians, singers and groups whose work is rooted in the English folk genre. A steering group, led by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), and comprising of festival programmers, agents, managers, funders and development agencies – all working in the folk music sector across England – will select up to 25 artists who will in turn be recommended to Celtic Connections' Artistic Director, Donald Shaw. He will make the final selection of six artists to perform at Celtic Connections in 2013.

The application process for artists wishing to be selected to perform at this prestigious event opens on Wednesday 2 November 2011. The closing date for applications will be Tuesday 6 December 2011. Showcase performances will take place between Wednesday 23 and Sunday 27 January 2013 at various venues in Glasgow during Celtic Connections.

I'm sure this is not as dodgy as it sounds - but that sort of spiel is used by many "pay to play" scams to entice artists in to "showcase gigs".
