On the YouTube home page today, in the right-hand column under "Spotlight", the Tuesday feature is videos posted by the Alan Lomax Archive.

Music Tuesday: An American Patchwork

"Before YouTube, Americans performed mainly for each other at home -- until ethnomusicologists like Alan Lomax showed up, first with tape recorders and later with video equipment. Lomax captured amazing, hidden worlds of American music -- and now you can see his discoveries at youtube.com/AlanLomaxArchive."

Links are given there to videos of bluesman R.L. Burnside, fiddler Tommy Jarrell, vocal effects and bottle by Fred "Junior" Thomas, and singer Shiela Kay Adams.

(Thanks to the American Folklife Center for the tip via Facebook.)

It doesn't seem to appear in the UK.

One nit-picking point. Alan Lomax didn't first collect using a tape recorder. That method was in the future.

nit taken.

If you're not getting the home page thing, the best approach is to go right to the Alan Lomax Archive YouTube channel (which I also linked above), where they will also not be so prone to historical inaccuracies. Also, there are lots more videos, many of which were probably film, once.

Wonderful stuff - thank you. Now if only Alan Lomax's films of the Copper Family from Rottingdean, Sussex, England could be available ... Does anyone know if the films are still extant?
