Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 25 Nov 11 - 12:46 PM I got several email from guys claiming to do radio shows on stations somewhere on the back arse of Kentucky or North Carolina, demanding I send free copies. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Dave Sutherland Date: 25 Nov 11 - 12:17 PM I once received a telephone call from a chap asking if he sent me his group's LP (yes it was some years ago)would I review it? Then he added "once that you have reviewed it can you send it me back" |

Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: treewind Date: 25 Nov 11 - 12:16 PM "I thought that giving a CD to another musician was just a friendly, collegial gesture" Yes, if you choose to give one away, but I think the issue here is when somebody approaches you expecting to being given a CD, and when that happens hundreds of times. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: kendall Date: 25 Nov 11 - 12:00 PM Gail. your story reminds me of the time some thief stole the carburetor off my old Buick. The old thing was parked in a deserted place because the carburetor was screwed up, and it just quit running! |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: meself Date: 25 Nov 11 - 11:54 AM And here I thought that giving a CD to another musician was just a friendly, collegial gesture; never suspected it was such a repugnant imposition. I really must have just fallen off the turnip truck .... |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: GUEST,Jonny Sunshine Date: 25 Nov 11 - 11:37 AM Someone once came up to me straight after a song while on stage at a festival and loudly asked how much my CDs were, followed up by, can I swap for one of mine. The most tactful thing I could think of was to say yes, figuring that the actual cost of the CD wasn't worth worrying over it. I bumped into him the following year, he told me how much he'd enjoyed the album. Which is way, way more than I could say in return.... |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Hamish Date: 25 Nov 11 - 03:12 AM Um... should I switch off my cookie before posting this? Probably, but never mind, eh? Like DebC and others I have any number of "obligation" CDs. Some gifts, some I have found it awkward to not buy. Heck, I've even bought too many CDs at the end of gigs by established acts that I've really enjoyed...and the CD is deemed surplus to requirements long before the end of its first play. I suppose bird scarers is another option, but I like DebC's grab bag idea. You'd have to be careful whose CDs were in each bag and where you were off-loading them tho'!! On the other hand, sometimes there's a gem - or a rough diamond - waiting to be discovered. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Mysha Date: 24 Nov 11 - 02:32 PM Hi, Oh, I don't know. It would seem to me, you can always offer your CD to someone if you're honest about you wanting them to have it. It's just that there should be no strings attached. If you find it in their garage sale (US) / the folk club raffle (UK) next, that should be their business, not yours. Asking for more than that would seem a recipe for "discussions" to me. Yes, Chris, we know. It's in the telling. But it was a nice thread starter. Bye, Mysha |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: banjoman Date: 24 Nov 11 - 06:40 AM Can't remember who it was but in a club many years ago someone asked a performer if he could have a go on his whistle the artiste replied " Ok but have you got aids" When the punter replied "No" the artiste then said "Well I have but you can have a go on my whistle if you want to" |

Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: GUEST,Gail Date: 24 Nov 11 - 05:28 AM My ex was a musician and always came back from tours with dozens of unsolicited CD 'gifts'. Some were a delight but many were not. When we were burgled, the CDs were nicked and I've often wondered if getting stuck with that particular collection of CDs wasn't poetic justice for that burglar. |

Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: treewind Date: 23 Nov 11 - 06:28 PM Bideford Folk Club has a great scheme where from time to time everybody brings a few CDs they don't want and they get put on a table, and anyone can take anything they like for free. Apparently many come away from this absolutely delighted with stuff they've found there, even though the source of their pleasure was something another club member never wanted to see again. Duton Hill Folk Club has a box for unwanted CDs which are dropped in for nothing and sold for £1 to help raise funds for the club. That scheme is going quite well too. We've done a couple of CD swaps, but I don't think it happens so much in the UK. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Anne Lister Date: 23 Nov 11 - 06:06 PM That moment when someone suggests we swap albums is the moment I hate the most ... although someone asking me to give them an honest critique of their songs comes close, I suppose. There are a few rare and honourable exceptions to both of those moments, of course. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Phil Edwards Date: 23 Nov 11 - 04:40 PM I did once see a struggling folkie give someone a copy of his CD - and, the next week, saw the punter go up to him and give it back ("it's all right, it's just not really my kind of thing"). The guy said to me afterwards, "so it's official - I can't give it away". |

Unfortunately I am not about to haul 200-300 CDs to the UK for Folk Club raffles :-) :-) We don't have that custom here in the States, thus the grab bag idea. Deb |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: terrier Date: 23 Nov 11 - 02:49 PM I havn't made my first CD yet, but I'm taking orders now for when I issue it. Just send me $18 or £15 to reserve your copy. They'll go like hot er..cakes ;p |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: kendall Date: 23 Nov 11 - 01:00 PM It's just bad form to expect to swap CDs with anyone. If they want one of yours, they will ask for it. I've known Tom Paxton for 30 years but I would never suggest swapping cds with him. Selling them is how he makes his living for Pete's sake! |

Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:51 PM A good use of unwanted CD gifts is to put them in the raffle at folk clubs! I was once discussing rock and roll (you remember, sort of 50s or early 60s popular music) in a pub with my daughter and her boyfriend - comparing it to modern re-creations (as distinct from re-interpretaton) of that period's music - and I called it "necrophiliac" rock and roll. A nosy bugger next to us said "What's "necrophiliac" - so I told him that it was someone who fucked dead people. He looked at me as if I should not have said that in front of my daughter. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Arnie Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:44 AM Not in a folk club, but I passed a young couple in a crowded pub just as she was saying to him 'and what exactly is a knee trembler?' I really wanted to stick around to hear his reply but had to keep moving due to balancing a couple of pints. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: DebC Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:35 AM Right on, Jacqui. I never know how to react to this one. I am offered CDs all the time and I feel it's rude to refuse. Consequently, I have A LOT of CDs that I really don't care for and they are cluttering up my storage space. I had an incident happen a couple of weeks ago at a conference where a person offered me their CD. I looked at it and said to them "Thank you, but you already gave me a copy of this a few years ago" The only way I knew that was I found the CD in a pile of unwanted discs. The person then said, "Did you bring any of your CDs with you?" This was an obvious hint that they wanted a free copy. I replied "I did bring some with me, but I am only giving them to DJs and concert presenters who ask. If you would like one, they are $15 for purchase" I didn't feel bad about this at all. This person was clueless. I have been thinking of taking all the unwanted CDs we have (and between hubby and meself there are hundreds) and offering them up as "Grab Bags" for a certain amount of money and donating the proceeds to our local food bank. Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Acorn4 Date: 23 Nov 11 - 09:40 AM I was once asked if I had a CD and would be willing to swap - I said OK although I wasn't mad keen on the one on offer. After we'd swapped, the bloke sai:- "Actually, mine's £20." Must have seen me coming! |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Nov 11 - 09:24 AM There are people around who think that giving a copy of their own CD automatically entitles them to receive a copy of a CD from a performer - seen it happen more than once. Difference is, some people are trying to make a living, at least partially, out of the music and selling their CDs comes into the equation. Whilst they might, for politeness sake, and to avoid upsetting another would be performer, take a proffered CD I can see no reason why they should have to give away one of their own. Gifts should be given without expecting something in return. |
Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Tim Leaning Date: 23 Nov 11 - 09:19 AM Yes I know we got the Bob Dylan for free because he is needing a few small practice gigs.. But its not traditional ..this could ruin the club. |
