Subject: It's gonna get real quiet here From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:13 AM Just to let you know, tomorrow (Nov 24th) is Thanksgiving Day in the U.S., probably the most important holiday of the year for adults. (Christmas can be joyful, but Thanksgiving means more.) If you post and no American answers, that's why. We're busy. Many people are traveling, while others are preparing the feast. Many people will take both tomorrow and Friday off. Some will start their Christmas shopping on Friday, but I'm not into that. Today, my DH and I drive 227 miles to Ames, to celebrate with our honorary nieces. So if you post a post and response is disappointing, don't give up too soon. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Becca72 Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:17 AM Leenia - no worries. I'll cover for all of the other Americans; I'm working tomorrow so I'll just represent the USA :-) I'm sure there are a couple other 'Catters who will help me. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Midchuck Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:26 AM Sloppy snowstorm in VT, supposed to be worse in New Hampshire, so we decided to put off driving to Mass. for Thanksgiving with Kris's family until the cold grey dawn of Thursday. The weather would probably be OK later today, but day-before-Thanksgiving traffic, in the late afternoon and evening, is the worst of the entire year, and greater Boston area traffic is the worst to be found north and east of New York City. So any alternative to driving in that area at that time is preferable. Might be a good day do experiment with different bridge saddles in the new Recording King and see if I can improve the action a little without starting a buzz. P. |

Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Jeri Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:31 AM My power was off earlier, but is on now and most of the wet snow got wetter. I usually manage to post something on Thanksgiving. There usually are people in the US posting, but maybe not as much. I bought the birdies some food I ought to put out, including a little something for the carnivores. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: glueman Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:35 AM Thanksgiving would have filled the winter gap between bonfire night and Christmas nicely in the UK, if we had such a thing. These days Christmas begins so early we don't feel its absence. As a kid, those 50 days used to drag by. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:42 AM We don't really need a special day to be thankful, but it's a nice tradition and Jeri usually comes over to help us eat turkey and the fixin's, drink some nice wine, and maybe sing a little bit around the table. This year, though, it seems we have an abundance of things to be thankful for and I, for one, am being very thankful every day and not just the US Thanksgiving Day. Linn |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:44 PM It's a bit awkward - as I understand it the USAians thank God for getting rid of us, and it would be curious if we did the same... |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: kendall Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:54 PM Not so, Richard. We have Thanksgiving Day for the fact that the Pilgrims survived that first winter. England had nothing to do with it. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:56 PM Actually, Richard, that had nothing to do with the original Thanksgiving proclamations. It was prayerful thanks for surviving ocean crossings, making it through hard winters, etcet etcet...combined with a harvest festival and thanks for the abundance to alleviate the next winter's hardship. Nothing against our country of origin...had a problem, though, with George III and his cronies trying to cover their financial posteriors with the fruit of the colonists' labor. Linn |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: BTNG Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:57 PM England had nothing to do with it....? soooooooo.....where EXACTLY did these pilgrims come from then? |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Gibb Sahib Date: 23 Nov 11 - 12:57 PM Richard, "Getting rid of" the British (English?), which happened long before my ancestors came to America, is the furthest thing from my mind during U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: breezy Date: 23 Nov 11 - 01:50 PM They lost to Stourbridge 2 0, in the cup, so no celebrations in Plymouth this week I'm afraid, , and , they are bottom of the league, and adrift, so they could end up anywhere. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 23 Nov 11 - 01:58 PM A Happy Thanksgiving to all American Mudcatters for the 24th! |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: Becca72 Date: 23 Nov 11 - 01:59 PM It's not a question of where he grips it...er, I mean the pilgrims point of origin has nothing to do with them being thankful for surviving the first winter in the New World, BTNG... |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Nov 11 - 02:02 PM Yes, indeed ~~ Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Valerie & I, some years ago, had American friends who lived not far from us who always honoured us greatly by inviting us to their celebrations. ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: NOMADMan Date: 23 Nov 11 - 02:10 PM I understand the town dump in Stockbridge, Massachusetts is closed on Thanksgiving. John |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: terrier Date: 23 Nov 11 - 02:31 PM No thanksgiving Nov 24th here in a little North Wales village, we've been informed there'll be a power outage ALL DAY for repair work to be carried out! Now why can't they do that in the warm summer months? Have a good thanksgiving all you USAers and keep safe. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: dick greenhaus Date: 23 Nov 11 - 03:58 PM Richard- The Pilgrims were subjects of the British Empire. At leat until the Revolution, which happened a bit later. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: gnu Date: 23 Nov 11 - 04:06 PM I am thankful for the Yanks. Great bunch! Just stop sending snow storms up the east coast at us eh? ya hosers. >;-) |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: GUEST,mg Date: 23 Nov 11 - 04:07 PM Was it the pilgrams or puritans who sailed from Holland? mg |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: C. Ham Date: 23 Nov 11 - 04:11 PM In Canada, tomorrow, we have the weekly celebration of "Thursday." I traditionally celebrate Thursday by starting the day with a Tim Hortons double double and a whole grain blueberry muffin. Somewhat different from the traditional Wednesday celebration which begins with a Tim Hortons double double and banana nut muffin. |
Subject: RE: It's gonna get real quiet here From: GUEST Date: 23 Nov 11 - 04:22 PM They sailed from Holland but most of them were......English...and yes it matters |
