THESE DAYS

By Lothian 121

Can anyone correct and complete the lyrics to this song?

I was thinking late last night,

Have we forgot the meaning of sacrifice?

My grandparents' generation well they didn't think twice,

I wonder if it'd be the same these days.

Grandad had just fifteen years,

When he left with ___?__ without shedding our ? tears,

To fight Franco's army with the other volunteers,

Could have been a thousand years ago.

I can't imagine what he'd seen,

A catalogue of violence by the age of eighteen,

Things we'd only experience on the T.V. screen,

I don't know if I could cope with that.

Two years later tired and sore,

He returned to a country on the brink of war,

He began to fight for something that's worth fighting for,

Well they wouldn't know a thing about that.

I was thinking late last night,

Have we forgot the meaning of sacrifice?

My grandparents' generation well they didn't think twice,

I don't think it'd be the same these days.

Here is a link to a YouTube video featuring These Days by Lothian 121

On another site, fm Radio, it says Lothian 121 are a Scottish band, based in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. They have recorded four albums of songs since 1999

Does anyone know more about the song or the songwriters?

Geoff

I think the line is:

When he left me in my playroom without shedding a tear

The rest is fine except the last line starts with And I ...

Thank you Mick Pearce(MCP), the words you suggest sounds righ -it is what I can now hear myself - but now I can't imagine what the meaning of the verse is!

Grandad had just fifteen years,

When he left me in my playroom without shedding a tear,

To fight Franco's army with the other volunteers,

Could have been a thousand years ago.

Before, the verse seemed to be saying that Grandad left something/somewhere to fight Franco when he (Grandad) was 15 years old. But there are not many 15 year old Grandad's. ???? Suggestions?

Hi - just came across your thread!

You have pretty much nailed most of the lyrics - apologies for garbled vocals!

The missing line is "When he left Kinlochleven without shedding a tear" - this is the village near Fort William in Scotland that he was brought up in - although I do like the ambiguity of some of the other suggestions!

Oh, and at the end of verse 4 - "well I wouldn't know a thing about that"

Neil Westgarth
