The second edition of Fintan Vallely's Companion to Irish Traditional Music has just been published. Not cheap at €59 but an essential reference work all the same.

I got it through the Book Depository for the pre-order price of €45 (in fairness, the order stood for a year or more). It's a massive volume though and well worth it.

While it's an improvement on the first edition I think some of the criticism levelled at the first one still applies. It's obvious the editor is a flute player as there are many entries for flute makers, you'll be hard pressed to find many makers of the uilleann pipes though. Maybe a work like this necessarily reflects the interest of the contributors.

Some other mistakes catch the eye though. Under the entry for Terry Bingham there's mention of fluteplayer Michael Heinz. It did take me a minute to realise Kilsahnny flute player Michael Hynes was the man in question. But there you have it. 57 Varieties.

Peter, Thanks for the lead on Book Depository, they have accepted my order. I too had ordered it a year or so ago, from Amazon, but got discouraged and cancelled the order. Looks like I'll finally get a copy. Thanks

Is Fintan Vallely related to Cillian and Niall?

p.s. The Vallelys are an extensive musical family from Armagh. Offhand, I'm not sure of the relationship between Cillian, NIall and Fintan.
