Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this song. I think the name of the writer was Tom/Terry Kelly, and I know that John Allan Cameron recorded a version on his "Glencoe Station" album. I'd really like to get the guitar chords for it too!

Thanks!

I checked in the DigiTrad and didn't see anything. Do you know any of the lyrics at all?

I did find Hoyt Axton's lyrics for Evangelina, at another site. Is that the one you are looking for?

Yes, the Axton one sprang to mind for me as well. Also, James McMurtry has a song called 'Angeline' on his 'Two Long in the Wasteland' album.

The only Evangeline that I know was performed by Emmy Lou Harris with The Band on the Last Waltz CD.

Can't remember much of it, but the opening line was

She used to stand on the Banks of the Mighty Mississippi (another line) Waiting for her man, a riverboat gambler, Said that he'd be home tonight Part of the chorus goes

Evengeline, Evangeline, cursed is the soul of the Missippi Queen.

Sound at all familiar? If so, I believe the lyrics are printed in the Liner notes of The Last Waltz.

I take it rippythegator has the words. Here are some simple cords.
(C)She stands on the banks of mighty Mississippi,
Alone in the pale moon(G7)light,
Waiting for her man, a riverboat gambler,
Who swore that he'd be there to(C)night...
(Chorus) E(F)vangeline, E(C)vangeline,
(G7)Cursed is the soul of that (C)Mississippi Queen,
That (G7)stole your man away.(C)

I found the Hoyt Axton song through the Official Hoyd Axton Web Page. The "Evangeline" that was recorded by Emmylou Harris, was written by Robbie Robertson - Click here to view it at Cowpie. Click here for one more "Evangeline," this one written by Bob McDill and Carson Chamberlain and recorded by Chad Brock.

Evangelina
(by Hoyt Axton and K Higginbotham)

I dream in the morning
That she brings me water
And I dream in evening
That she brings me wine
Just a poor man's daughter
From Puerto Penasco
Evangelina in old Mexico

There's a great hot desert
South of Mexicali
And if you don't have water
Then you better not go
Tequila won't get you
Across the desert
To Evangelina in old Mexico

And the fire I feel for the
Woman I love
Is driving me insane
Knowing she's waiting
And I just can't get there
Lord only knows that I've
Racked my brain
To try and find a way
To see that woman in old Mexico

I met a kind man
Who guarded the border
He said you don't have papers
But I'll let you go
I can tell that you love her
By the look in your eyes now
She's the rose of the desert
In old Mexico

And the fire I feel for the
Woman I love
Is driving me insane
Knowing she's waiting
And I just can't get there
Lord only knows that I've
Racked my brain
To try and find a way
To see that woman in old Mexico

And I dream in the morning
That she brings me water
And I dream in the evening
That she brings me wine
Just a poor man's daughter
From Puerto Penasco
Evangelina in old Mexico

There's a great hot desert
South of Mexicali
And if you don't have water
Then you better not go
Tequila won't get you
Across the desert
To Evangelina in old Mexico

She's the rose of the desert
In old Mexico

Thanks for the help so far, but we haven't hit the right song yet. I have my John Allan Cameron CD that the song appears on, and it was written by Jamie Snider. Anyhow, the lyrics go a bit like this:

1st verse:

Standing on the shore looking so serene
Long black hair and old blue jeans
Loveliest woman I've ever seen...Evangeline

2nd verse:

Pool hall heroes all heave a sigh
Big city bosses get bashful and shy
Hearts beat faster when she walks by...Evangeline

Chorus:
All around the world I'm bound to roam
Tired and hungry and all alone
I'll sing no more till I get back home
To you...Evangeline

There's another couple of verses etc., but I have no clue about the chord structure to it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help so far!

I've been looking for the full set of lyrics to Evangeline. There are many different songs of the same name, but this is the one that begins
V
She stands on the banks of the mighty Mississippi
Alone in the pale moonlight
Waiting for a man, a riverboat gambler
Who said that he'd return tonight...
CHO
Evangeline, Evangeline
Curses the soul of the Mississippi queen,
Who took her man away.

I'm halfway there, and just need a bit of help.
Thanks,

Lyrics found at the web site for some role-playing game. Sorry, I can't help you with the chords.

EVANGELINE
(Jamie Snider)

Standing on the shore looking so serene
Long black hair and old blue jeans
Loveliest woman I've ever seen
Evangeline.

The pool hall heroes all heave a sigh
Big city bosses get bashful and shy
Hearts beat faster when she walks by
Evangeline.

CHORUS: All around the world I'm bound to roam
Tired and hungry an all alone
I'll sing no more till I get back home
To you - Evangeline.

I first fell in love with her at age fourteen
Been lookin' for her every place I've been
She's a lover like no other and she's my queen
Evangeline.

I'm goin' on the highway, goin' by air
Goin' out west but I ain't goin' nowhere
I hope the Lord will hear my prayer
And carry me to Evangeline. CHORUS

I'll sing no more - till I get back home
To you - Evangeline.

Joe,

Thanks for posting the Robbie Robertson song.

The first time I ever heard Emmylou was doing this song in The Last Waltz. Her voice truly sent a chill down my spine, I will always remember that moment. I've since got a lot of her CD's. And Levon Helm is one of my favourite singers, the combination of those two singing this song with the rest of The Band harmonizing was magical.

Apparently due to throat cancer Levon can't sing anymore. What a loss.

'It's feeling like a wasted night,
The piano's dead, the drummer's tight'.....

This is the start of a song I have on the live recording of Stan Rogers at Bermuda Folk Club in 1978....
The recording is not commercially available...
Stan comments before the song that it 'is a metaphor for Nova Scotia'....and is called Evangeline...
I don't have the part of the tape that mentions the composer...

Hope this doesn't confuse the issue...!

Pete

There was one they sang in Maine about Evangaline but it was somewhat irreverant..it went on about gas stations and taverns and all sorts of places named after her..but it was really cute.

Anyway, it is really good to read the original very long poem. It is very sad indeed. mg
