In the philosophy section of the Queens Head bar, there is a current discussion on whether Mr D Cameron asks his mate Mr J Clarkson to write offensive insults for Mr Cameron's use at Prime Minister's Questions.

As ever, one half of the world are trying to have fun and the other half are trying to stop them.

Clarkson being outrageous is no different to when Ewan McColl sang in a false Scottish accent. An entertainer putting on a persona to entertain.

I bet you wouldn't know his new book was out if it wasn't for this?

Job done, move on.

(Those reading this thread from The USA will no doubt notice that we Brits enjoy being outraged. It's one of our national sports...)

Oh, heck.. I suppose I should hate him too? After all;

1. I work (ish) in the public sector.
2. I own a caravan.
3. I am married to a bell ringer.
4. I enjoy long walks in the country.

But there again, I laughed my head off when he likened the small row of lights adorning new Audi headlights to "looking like a council house at Christmas." Or that if the engine on a TVR Cerbera was a singer, it would be Joe Cocker. Or, when he found the vineyard where "Blue Nun" wine grapes were grown, he cupped a handful of budding grapes, looked at the camera and said "These will be on a dining table in Rotherham next year."

If public sector strikers are to be taken out and shot, can I request whoever cocked up my DVLA form the other month be first on the list?

Just logging into Amazon to buy the new book.

`e said, "I dunno, Jim. Where`s their sense of "yoomer" gone? I try to be even `anded about it all. What do people want nowadays?"
I said, "Ross, Russel Brand and tasteless stand-up jokers making fun of Downes Syndrome children!!"

I didn't know before reading this thread that JC and DC were mates, it has led me to speculate which of them is the more "soiled by association"?

To my mind JC is not an idiot, despite regularly behaving in an idiotic fashion. He is manipulative, a self-publicist (that's seen as a bad thing here) and frequently thoroughly objectionable. So are some other broadcasters, though he does stand out a bit.

It isn't a crime, and the size of the fan base tells me that a significant proportion of the population do not see matters as I do. Nothing new there, after all I like proper music and beer, while disliking all spectator sports and most animals.

I just ignore the opinions on the odd occasion that I go TV-slumming to watch the daft antics they get up to. The opinions seem little different from those of the bigots one can encounter just by leaving the house, and life is too short to spend it getting in a lather about them.

Just as an aside, I looked at the top 10 of Series downloaded on iTunes.

Five of them were Top Gear or Clarkson - so it just shows how many people like his style (just like me).

He may be many things, but stupid he ain't. He just LOVES winding up 'stuffed shirts'.

Err . . . . look above, grist to the mill. Whether you love or hate him, there are very few people who don't know who he is . . . especially now.

Have fun

Can't argue with that. You could, of course, equally well say that about Vincent Tabak, Jack The Ripper or Colonel Gaddafi! Or even dear old Adolf! (I hear he could crack a good joke* now and then an' all! :) )

*Mein Hund hat keine Nase.

Wie riecht er?

Schrecklich!

(Funnier than Clarkson's "joke", awful though it is!)

Don Cherry

Totally agree. JC is not an idiot. He's a bloody fascist.

All his defenders keep saying is; can't you take a joke?

Is global warming a joke? was the only left winger of Blairs cabinet - in there to defend the trades unions - a joke?   No he bloody wasn't. But he was a fat man and theresore - an easy subject of ridicule.

Every evil act at some point has to be talked about to prepare for it.

I can remember growing up in Boston, Lincs where nary a black or brown face was ever seen round about 1968. And I heard some kids shouting silly abuse at each other, calling each other coon and nigger. And I realised they had had learned that stuff from Johnny Speight's Til Death Us Do Part. A series I had enjoyed, but even then I realised - it had done something evil by influencing young kids.

Clarkson is like that. He facilitates the bad talk, prior to the bad acts. he teaches bad stuff to silly kids. And he doesn't seem to have any remorse or conscience about what he's done.

I would say to those people who enjoy Clarkson - when your society fragments around you, don't blame Clarkson or whichever version of Hitler he is an apologist for. blame yourselves. you let him abuse the freedoms your fathers fought for.

'The freedoms your fathers fought for.'
One of those was freedom of speech.
My father was one of the fighters, and a free thinker. He would have loved J.C., mostly to argue with him.

Clarkson is not an apologist for Hitler, if for no other reason than that Hitler was a greenie!
Can anyone show a reference of Clarkson using racism in his diatribes, beyond calling a certain politician Scottish?
'WHEN our society fragments around us?' (Not technically mine, nowadays.) That started before Clarkson was born, and has accelerated in recent years.
I also remember that TV series starring Johnny Speight, but I didn't like it. I was embarrassed by the prejudice. Fancied Una Stubbs, though. And that programme was a poke at bigotry, for viewers that had the brains that God gave a Lemming.

But bringing Hitler into it and saying Clarkson will make society fragment around you? Seems you have more faith in his abilities than those of us who enjoy the idiot.

Oh McGraw, I do have to buy his book before it goes cheap. The poor bloke makes a point of not starting a pension fund, which I don't think is a good idea so being afraid for his future, I make sure he gets his royalties OK.

(Bill Bryson gave a speech at a university graduation day I was at the other year, and his advice to the world was "Always buy my books when they are first released, preferably in hardback.")

Late night last night. there was this programme called The story of Ireland. It was an episode all about Davitt, Parnell - all those cats you did at O level History, but they all sort of melded into one. God knows what they do at school nowadays - probably the history of Big Brother with special reference to Davina McCall. (we might as well have done the same for all we learned!)

Apparently the doctrine of the free market and laissez faire as propounded by Lord John Russel and a guy called Trevelyan(something to do with the exchequer) were mainly to blame for the extent of the suffering in the famine. Wonder who the Clarkson of the day was - keeping England in stitches.

Fuck you Ian....? best offer I've had for a while.

Oh, come on, Big Al! NO ONE in Canada thinks of "Don Cherry" as a jazz musician. Good grief! Trust me on this. Don Cherry the hockey commentator and fashion icon is quite possibly the best known man in all of Canada. People either love him or hate him. Even his dog, Blue, is legendary. I know people who've met him personally and had a beer with him. (they all speak very well of him, despite his penchant for saying outrageous things when he's on the air)

He is so right wing that if he were an airplane, he wouldn't even HAVE a wing on the left side! I'm betting he is WAY to the right of Jeremy "The Idiot" Clarkson, and that he could check Clarkson into the boards so hard that it would make all his teeth fall out. (that's hockey lingo)

Don Cherry is living proof that you can be to the right of Genghis Khan and still be a funny and entertaining man. I fear what might happen if he were elected prime minister (as Shane keeps hoping), but it will never happen, so why worry?

" [Don Cherry] looks like a Peacock who imagines himself to be a Bird of Paradise, and a relentless self-publicist"

Exactly! You could hardly have put it better. ;-D

"Can he do anything, or is he just a 'personality'?"

Well...he was a pretty decent NHL hockey player in his youth. He then went into coaching and did that okay too. He then went into being a TV sports commentator and became absolutely notorious after that. He's written a couple of bestselling books about hockey, and is the subject of many hockey videos.

All in all, I'd say he's done quite well, but his genius for self-promotion is probably his greatest asset.

"I'm not in the U.K., so I hope that this doesn't add to your paranoia."

It does, sir (or Madam), it does! I positively quiver with alarm. I fear I shall get little sleep tonight. ;-D

Yeah, I know I didn't address Al verbatim, (but near enough.)

I am not a trendsetter so don't want to be the first person in history to actually address the words of what somebody said during a debate.

After all, the early posts on this thread debated the media reaction to what the media said Clarkson said, not the context in which he said it. (Taking the piss out of the BBC stance of "in the interest of balance" by sounding as unbalanced as you can get.)

(Which, lets face it, isn't hard for him.)

A few comparisons above between Clarkson and the Johnny Speight character Alf Garnett. I recall the actor playing him, Warren Mitchell, when shouted to in the street how bang on Alf was, he used to shout back "We're laughing at you, not with you."

He gets way more controversial than that, John. He's always raising a ruckus on TV about something and offending millions of liberal-minded people with his antediluvian take on hockey violence and other pressing social issues. He's sort of like John Wayne in a sports jacket, the same basic approach, but a bit more raucous.

The video about his sports jackets is just a sort of affectionate look at one of his more obvious eccentricities, so don't expect too much controversy from it. ;-)

I dunno Ian.

I don't watch the guy's programme regularly, but I happened upon it onetime.

He had Jonathan Porrit, the Head of greenpeace on, and he proceded to rip the piss out of him (really ridicule the Green point of view) in front of a jeering studio audience. I've never been anything but lukewarm of Green matters, but I felt a terrible line had been crossed. It made me feel very uneasy.

The thing they said about Speight was that he took official Conservative Pary policy and put it into the mouths of an idiot.

I feel Clarkson gives voice to to right wing scepticism, and puts the rhetoric into the mouths of the unthinking and anti-intellectual. The lad culture personified.

Subject: RE: BS: Jeremy 'The Idiot' Clarkson

Ben Elton used to give voice to left wing scepticism for that matter.

Clarkson rips into everybody not just Porrit. That's what the viewers want, same as the readers of tabloids want phone hacking if it adds to their puerile pleasure. Sad sick world we live in...

Tell you what though, humour is always at the expense of somebody, and if it is at the expense of an object or an animal, it is given human traits in order to be funny. Some people push the boundaries of that, both from right and left angles. If I were a conservative, I would be outraged at BBC Radio 4's The Now Show. If I were a socialist, I might be outraged at Clarkson.

Thing is, we all enjoy being outraged. Graham Souness got it right when he criticised football commentators for being hypocrites over violence on the pitch and dirty play. The punters love it and viewing figures go up when known "red mist" players are on the park. Same as the number of people who when Formula 1 becomes a procession genuinely want a pile up to make it interesting.

Bread and circuses.

Clarkson is a product of entertainment, not an instigator of it. And he knows it. Love or hate will do. It is indifference that would concern him.

Two kids in Scotland have just been sent to prison, in one case for four years for inciting others to riot last August, even tho' there were no consequences.

I once said on the telly that a large landfill near where I used to live could have a few dustbins thrown into it and call it New Langwith.

Although drinking in Langwith became a bit adventurous for a few weeks, I don't recall being charged with instigating a pogrom or forcing resettlement of Langwith residents.

I didn't think I was inciting people to put up signs at the landfill with New Langwith written on it for that matter. (My mate Barrie did do so though, and a photo of it was behind the bar of my local for a few months.)

Clarkson was providing outrageous entertainment, lampooning and ensuring his new book got good coverage. The criminals in Scotland were inciting riot.

A bit like how wet gravel isn't or how dry water is. Saying Clarkson was inciting execution is about serious as his comments. ZZZZZ

Most criminals say they don't mean it. It doesn't follow that when you point out that you said something in fun that you are ergo a criminal.

A bit like the Unison bloke saying that every public sector employee is offended by Clarkson's comments. Well, considering my poll of my wife, three mates and a neighbour indicates otherwise, perhaps we should question the word "every" in the same way you are questioning the word "joking'?

Who's next? Who are the media going to tell you to hate next? Baa Baa

The mass media make a regular business of telling people who to hate...not in so many words, mind you...but they definitely incite hatred through various forms of repetitive propaganda, scare stories, and sensationalism. American media, for example, have been inciting hatred of the Iranian regime and Mr Ahmadinejad for many years now...and also of Hugo Chavez....while Mr Ahmadinejad and Mr Chavez are likewise using their own media to incite hatred of the USA regime.

How much justification there is for any of these sustained efforts at getting domestic populations to hate the leaders and governments of other nations is debatable, but the intent to incite hatred is obvious.

Most people object to such shoddy and negative media tactics only when their own "bull" is the one being gored.

Yes LH but it seems it's OK to incite nations to hate nations.

Remember the Cold War.

A few years ago, I got to teach a bunch of pilots from Uzbekistan, including ex-military pilots included (i.e. the 'enemy'). All they wanted from life was: a decent job, a nice home and money enough for clothes, a car, education and health care for their families etc. Obviously these were the 'Devil Spawn' of the Communist regime that we'd all been told about. Actually, they were a nice bunch of PEOPLE, I liked them.

But when someone in the public domain says something risqué, then 'everyone' demands them to resign or generally throw themselves on their sword.

Why?

I too have asked Unison members what they felt - they thought to a man (and woman) that it was funny.

Apart from all that, Jeremy (anything but an idiot) Clarkson is still someone I listen to because more times than enough he actually says what many of us think - perhaps not all the humour, but he daren't be boring - that's his trade mark.

Good luck to him

"he actually says what many of us think"

I'd like to make it clear at this point that Clarkson does not say what I think!

And as for him not being boring, I find his tedious, predictable manner almost as irritating as his hateful opinions. But then I'm aware I'm in a minority - half a million bored adolescents can't be wrong!

Ian

"Most criminals say they don't mean it. It doesn't follow that when you point out that you said something in fun that you are ergo a
criminal."

A bit of logical gymnastics there.

I didn't write that the Scottish boys said they didn't mean it, but that they said they were joking. Criminals may say they didn't mean it; not many say they were just joking.

Nor did I assert that saying something in fun makes you a criminal.

As for "Who are the media going to tell you to hate next? Baa Baa", I'm pretty impervious to such campaigns. I don't even hate Clarkson. Personally, I don't really do hate. The mass media didn't even normalise buying a house, eating junk food, loving celebrity, disliking foreigners, or embracing materialism.

Hope that helps.

As I remember Homer Lane, the American philosopher /psychiatrist said that most delinquency was carried out in the spirit of play.

Its not a good line of defence. ian Brady could use that to defend his 'games'.

its a matter of degree, isn't it?

I think Clarkson and his crap programme with his two sycophantic mates is bloody boring. I wouldn't propose shooting him in front of his family - but something in private maybe - involving a red hot poker up his roozle.
