I've always been convinced Nick Drake used DGDGAE (old Flamenco) tuning (for Chime Of A City Clock and a couple of others) but have never seen a mention of this tuning in any books/websites about him

you doing this with a regular string set, or changing individual string gauges as required ?

I enjoy an advantage having too many reasonable quality cheap ebay guitars and a box of salvaged spare strings..

good fun experimenting with drone tunings..

Yes its from low B to top E.

Its really quite fun.

You can do Martin Carthy's Famous Flower of Serving Men riff on it.

For the tonic you fret the first string on the 4th fret unlike Martins tuning where you fret the second.

The change from the long A shape to that tonic on the fourth fret of the Ist string is particularly pleasing.

I never really listened to drake til a few months ago. I was doing a gig next to bookstall at a country market. And there was a mucky copy of Parick Humphries biog. of drake. When I got home I found I could have bought a new copy off Amazon for two quid.

Anyway when eventually I started reading - I recognised a kindred spirit. I felt I knew him better than his biographer, because I'd lived through much of the same period - been to school and college in the 60's and Les Cousins!

He was a very capable guitarist, rather in the way that clever public school boys can do stuff really well - facile, shall we say. And thats very attractive.

I once put my Martin in that tuning for a bloke who played it a lot better than I did!
