This is over a year old, but I don't think it made it here:

The "Information is Beautiful" post How Much Do Music Artists Make Online.

("Information is Beautiful" is a blog with the graphic work of David McCandless, a London-based author, writer and designer.)

This graphic compares the earnings of self-pressed CDs sold directly, cdbaby sales, online MP3 sales, etc., and revenue from various sorts of streaming.

Just as a basis for graphical comparison, cd prices are set at $9.99, and the sales required for a solo artist to make a monthly minimum wage ($1,160) are graphed, as well as the piece of the pie going to the artist vs. the recording producer.

Obviously (I think!), there's nobody who actually tries to make a living as a solo musician solely on sales of recordings (not even Paul McCartney). Also, the usual argument for minimal revenue (e.g., basically free) streaming play is "exposure", and the calculus for this is not analyzed.

Interesting to see the comparisons, however.

I can't speak for every " folksinger" but I dont think they sing folks songs for the money. Like me for example. If I wanted to become famous with music I wouldn't have starting singing folks songs in the first place.

I just want to get the music out there so it wont die.

banjopicker, your motives are noble.

There are one or two individuals on the Mudcat who are trying to make a living from their music.

There are others who might have an interest in the economics of the situation independent of the relationship between their own needs for making a living and their choice of music to make.

There might be others who just like looking at cool graphic representations of data.

I posted this for those other folks, I guess.
