Subject: Chords Add: SONG FOR A WINTER'S NIGHT (Lightfoot)
From: Bob Landry
Date: 04 Dec 11 - 02:11 PM

I'm getting ready for a work-related Christmas function and this is one of the songs I'm going to do. Between poling around on the Internet and listening closely to the song on the CD "Gord's Gold", I've worked out these chords. Any corrections would be greatly appreciated. (Note, if you capo the second fret, you'll hit Gord's key.)

Bob

Song for a Winter's Night
© Gordon Lightfoot (from Gord's Gold)

Intro:   [G]          [F][C][D][G][F][C][D][G]

The lamp is [D] burnin' low up- [Em] on my table [C] top,
The [G] snow is [D] softly [G] falling [D]
[G] The air is [D] still within the [Em] silence of my [C] room,
[G] I hear your [D] voice softly [G] calling

If I could [D] only [C] have you [D] near,
[Bm] To breathe a [Em] sigh or [Am] two [D]
[G] I would be [D] happy just to [Em] hold the hands I [C] love,
[G] Upon this [D] winter night with [F] you [C][D][G][F][C][D][G]

The smoke is [D] rising in the [Em] shadows over- [C] head,
[G] My glass is [D] almost [G] empty [D]
[G] I read a- [D] gain between the [Em] lines upon each [C] page,
[G] The words of [D] love you [G] sent me

If I could [D] know with- [C] in my [D] heart,
[Bm] That you were [Em] lonely [Am] too [D]
[G] I would be [D] happy just to [Em] hold the hands I [C] love,
[G] Upon this [D] winter night with [F] you [C][D][G][F][C][D][G]

The fire is [D] dieing now, my [Em] lamp is growing [C] dim,
[G] The shades of [D] night are [G] liftin' [D]
[G] The morning [D] light steals a- [Em] cross my window [C] pane,
[G] Where webs of [D] snow are [G] driftin'

If I could [D] only [C] have you [D] near,
[Bm] To breathe a [Em] sigh or [Am] two [D]
[G] I would be [D] happy just to [Em] hold the hands I [C] love,
[G] Upon this [D] winter night with [B7] you [Em]
[C] And to be [D] once again with [F] you [C] ooo [D] ooo [G] ooo
                                  [F] ooo [C] ooo [D] ooo [G] ooo
                                  [F] ooo [C] ooo [D] ooo [G] ooo
                                  [F] ooo [C] ooo [D] ooo [G] ooo

"poling" should read "poking"

They're the chords that I use. Harry Belafonte sang this on Belafonte On Campus but it was called The Hands I Love

We have a copy without chords here.

(If we didn't already have them, I would have added them. I think it's important to have a copy without chords so that it can be more easily found with a search engine. If you search for "Upon this winter night with you" you won't find "Upon this [D] winter night with [F] you".)
