I use a 32-inch widescreen LCD television as a monitor. Usually, I love it, but browser toolbars at the top make the display too crowded to view comfortably. So, I have grown to hate toolbars. One time, a nun I work with asked me to help her with her sluggish computer. She's one of those people who always say "yes" when the computer says, "do you want...." - so half her screen was crowded with toolbars.

Geesh.

Firefox 8 doesn't accept Google Toolbar (yet), which I consider an essential program for any browser I use. This time I installed (then uninstalled) Firefox 8 but I haven't been able to successfully reinstall an earlier version (7) of Firefox with the Google the Toolbar. Hopefully Google will catch up since they have for IE's latest version.

I've had a similar cache problem with FireFox when I upload a new version of a music file to a web page with a link to the MP3. I've tried , & Clear Cache, usually without success -- I still get the old MP3 playing. I'll try a couple of the tricks above.

I suspect my problem is caused by one of the many add-on plugins, likely the download "helper", they're so tempting but sometimes more trouble than they're worth.

On a Mac (Firefox 3.6)

Tools menu > Clear Recent History ...

then select the appropriate options.

I never use the function keys. F5 seems to reload the page.

Running XP or Windows7 ?

With Windows7 a dialog box opens where you can select what you want to clear - cache is one of the choices.

oh....and now I've updated to Firefox 8.0.1, but clearing the cache seems to work the same way. There's a keyboard shortcut [CTRL+Shift+del] for clearing recent browsing history, but I don't think that clears the cache of old pages and scripts and such - or does it?

A friend of mine has been having trouble starting threads here. I told him to hit the "F5" button on his browser to load a new page, and that worked for him this time. Another thing I suggested was clearing his browser cache every couple weeks, since that generally helps Internet browsing go more smoothly.

But he's using Mozilla Firefox as a browser. I stopped using Firefox and moved to Google Chrome quite some time ago because I thought Firefox was becoming cumbersome, bogged down with too many featured. I opened Firefox 4.0.1 today and found it more cumbersome than I remembered. To clear the cache, I had to:

• right-click on the top of the browser and choose to display the menu bar
  
• Select tools, then options, then advanced, then network
  
• click the "clear now" button and then hit "OK."

I suppose I'm technically adept enough to do this myself without much hassle, but how do I explain something like this to a beginner?
