Subject: Techno-computer question From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Oct 99 - 01:51 PM Computer persons: I have tried several times to save one of the threads for reading or condensing later and I can't seem to save them in any format that doesn't include yards and yards of HTML and spaces. I have a PC, with Word Perfect Office Suite 7 (which I don't care for but am stuck with for right now). Any ideas? TX/ww |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Bert Date: 04 Oct 99 - 02:03 PM I use cut and paste. |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 99 - 03:07 PM Hi, WW - I use MSIE 5.0 (Microsoft Internet Explorer). If I go to the File at the top of my screen and choose Save As, there's a choice of file types I can select from. If I choose "text file," I get a file that contains only the text of this page, and not the graphics or HTML tags. The version of Netscape I have is 4.0, and I can't figure out how to do the same thing with that version. Maybe the more recent version also has the ability to save a text file. Does that help? As for using Word Perfect Office Suite, I think you might have the same feeling if you used Microsoft Office. I think we have a tendency to dislike the software we have and wish for what we haven't. I think both suites are pretty darn good, especially when I compare them with what I used ten years ago. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: wildlone Date: 04 Oct 99 - 03:24 PM Greetings from Dorset WW, I use internet exp 5 and save as Joe does but i save to 3.5 disk and edit what i want. it works for me. |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Jon Freeman Date: 04 Oct 99 - 07:41 PM I take bits out by copying pasting etc, but overall, my inclination would be to save the links or reference to pages I want and hope that they remain on the site for future reference. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Oct 99 - 07:51 PM Joe-- I tried doing the "save as" function and it only says "All Files," which doesn't seem to work the same way. I think I'll have to cut and paste the relevant stuff, apparently. Or print out and save the hard copy, which sort of defeats the purpose. It's often a dozen or more pages, not very compact. I do trace the threads I care about to my personal page, so I have them archived in case I want to look them up. I just thought there might be a handier way to save 'em and edit out some of the extraneous stuff. Thanks all, ww |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 99 - 07:55 PM Which browser do you have, Wyo? The response you get is what I get in Netscape, but MSIE 5.0 has a little arrow button you click to get choices of various file types. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: j0_77 Date: 04 Oct 99 - 08:33 PM In Netscape all you have to do is where is says Save as 'thread.cfm' - change it to
'thread.html'Same as save it anyway and later change the extension from 'CFM' to 'HTML' Another unecessary change by MS which makes Netscape less useful GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (I like Netscape a lot, makes neat webpages FAST)

Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 99 - 09:01 PM Thanks, j0. I've got it figured out. If you have MSIE, follow the instructions I gave above. If you have Netscape and are concerned about saving space on your hard drive, go to "file" and "save as." Instead of what j0 said, change the suggested file name from "xxx.CFM" to xxx.txt - the file will save in text format.I thought changing the name in the "save as box" simply changed the name, but it also changes the format. Ya learn something new every day. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Oct 99 - 10:03 PM I have Netscape Communicator. I did what jo said and saved it as thread.html and it worked. That's pretty cool. I'll try saving as .txt now and see how that changes things. Thanks for the assistance. best, ww |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Oct 99 - 10:11 PM Oh, heck yeah, that works. The HTML saves prettier than the .txt, but they both work just fine. Good job. Thanks again, WW |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Oct 99 - 01:19 AM WoW!!! And I was afraid we had just confused the issue, Wyo. I'm glad we succeeded in helping. The advantage of the text file is that it's a much smaller file. You figured out the advantages of the HTML file all by yourself. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: Ted from Australia Date: 05 Oct 99 - 08:01 AM G'day WW and all, If you just want to save to read off line and you have IE ( I dont know if Netscape will do this)click on File,New ,Window then click on the Back button the page is saved minimised on the lower toolbar. You can then go offline and view later, and type replies in the reply box, minimise and wait till you go back on line again then bring up and "submit message". Regards Ted

Subject: RE: Help: Techno-computer question From: katlaughing Date: 05 Oct 99 - 11:34 AM I've got another computer wizard query: I love the sound effect of an old fashioned typewriter which is in ICQ. Any idea on how I can download it for my WP program, and/or where I can find such sound fx? I looked through ICQ, but couldn't find anything. It's a great psychological prop for a writer.**BG** Thanks, kat |
