Subject: Folklore: Vodka Jelly [jello] From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 10 Dec 11 - 09:48 PM My wife needed cheering up so I surprised her tonight with home made vodka jellys and the recent rubbish "St Trinian's" remake.. plan worked .. success !!! Recipe I followed was 1/4 pint vodka to 1/2 pint water.. 3 pints of jelly was enough for one 90 min movie Oddly enough we don't feel too sick ??? Next time we might try sucking it up through a straw ??? Jelly is quite interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelatin_dessert apparently Tom Lehrer liked vodka jello.. My earliest memories of it - 50 years ago served up as a treat at Council Estate kiddies birthday parties; and the local Factory Xmas do for shop floor wage slaves young childeren [ie me] Was there ever a social stigma about jelly, or has it always been popular right across all social classes...??? Perhaps I should have titled this thread.. "The Social and Cultural History of Jelly" - anyone done a PHD on it ????? oh well, wifes gone cheerfully to bed, and I've got rest of a bottle of vodka and a computer keyboard... and it's only 2.45am.. wish i had some cider... |

Subject: RE: Vodka Jelly [jello] From: Wolfhound person Date: 11 Dec 11 - 04:04 AM Well I'm afraid where I was brought up (S. England, 1950s), jelly (and Christmas trifle)was something eaten by people who lived in things called council houses. It was a disgraceful attitude, in a very socially stratified "community" (huh!!) and I'm glad to say I've shaken its dust off my feet. If it helps the social researchers at all. Now, vodka jelly sounds um....only possible improvement might be a few "herbs" for a real party effect. Paws |
