The Rolling Stone (Will Thomas Withrow)
Cf: this page

I'm an A1 charter member of the ramblers of unrest
Known to every bird of passage, Chicago to Key West
I harvest wheat in Kansas, I cut ice in St. Paul
Peddled books in Dallas, Texas -- went hungry in ‘em all

Well, I ballyhooed a circus across the middle west
Done the county fairs in Georgia, I’ve been a city jailer’s guest
I preached in Detroit city, I cooked the timber camps in Maine
Picked fruit in California, sunshine or rain

Well, I been a cub reporter on many a small town sheet
I’ve run an all-night diner, sold gee-gaws on the street
I rode the blinds and the brake beams, Seattle to New York
Crossed the sea to chase adventure -- Berlin, Paris, Dublin, Cork

I walked the streets in China -- stowed away across the sea
I thumbed the roads of Europe, mostly broke but always free
I’ve been a lone stone rollin’ but I always rise to say
Found no place to suit me like good old USA

I'm an A1 charter member of the ramblers of unrest
Known to every bird of passage, Chicago to Key West
I harvest wheat in Kansas, I cut ice in St. Paul
Peddled books in Dallas, Texas -- went hungry in ‘em all

The Southern Cannonball (Jimmie Rodgers)

Well, I had to quit railroadin’, we didn’t agree at all
There was always sump’n wrong with the Southern Cannonball

Once I loved a maiden -- a lady fair and tall
Her father was an engineer on the Southern Cannonball

She promised she would wed me in the merry month of June
We’d go to the magic island, have a honeymoon

Then my dreams were shattered -- she put me off with a stall
She said the whistle is broken on the Southern Cannonball

Well, I loved that girl sincerely, so I fixed the whistle back
The very next thing she says to me is the caboose is off of the track

Well, both day and night I labored to get it back with the train
When all was ready for the highball the bell refused to ring

Well, I fixed that bell in a jiffy, and I called for Preacher Dunn
We tied the knot in an old boxcar but the train refused to run

Well, I had to quit railroadin’, we didn’t agree at all
There was always sump’n wrong with the Southern Cannonball

Losing you (might be the best thing yet) (Jimmy Martin)

Well, there's no such thing as sleep for a jealous fool
And being jealous of someone like you is truly foolish too
The life you chose is the one you want I guess
And losing you might be the best thing yet

The longest day I live I’ll still be suffering pain
While as a lover you were making yourself quite a name
I wanted you -- you wanted anyone you could get
And losing you might be the best thing yet

Well, patiently I’d sit at home and wait
Knowin’ where you were and what you were doing It turned my love to hate
My foolishness is all that I regret
And losing you might be the best thing yet

The longest day I live I’ll still be suffering pain
As a lover you were making yourself quite a name
I wanted you -- you wanted anyone you could get
And losing you might be the best thing yet
Losing you might be the best thing yet

Gettin’ in the Cows (Charlie Maguire)

Gettin’ in the cows, shoo ‘em in the barn
Put ‘em in a stanchion, turn the radio on
Milk ‘em all dry, send ‘em out again
Wait a month on the dairy for the check to come in

Well, I start my day in the sun-up dark
I’m goin’ down the lane and bring my milk cows up
Got a Holstein, Jerseey, a one-eyed steer
And an old brown cow jumps fences like a deer

Dew on the ground got my feet all wet
Got a light in my hand, a hat on my head
Goin’ through the pasture to get in my herd
Chewin’ their cud, lookin’ at the birds

Gettin’ in the cows, shoo ‘em in the barn
Put ‘em in a stanchion, turn the radio on
Milk ‘em all dry, send ‘em out again
Wait a month on the dairy for the check to come in

Well, get up you cows, got to get ‘em on the move
Their udders are swingin’ like water in balloons
Get ‘em to the barn and they know their place
With the lead one first and then I close the gate

Bring the cart around and give ‘em all some feed
Lick their noses and flap their ears at me
Put on the machine and it feels so good
Just let down their milk like a good cow should

Gettin’ in the cows, shoo ‘em in the barn
Put ‘em in a stanchion, turn the radio on
Milk ‘em all dry, send ‘em out again
Wait a month on the dairy for the check to come in

You know a tourist says a cow’s face is so fine
But I see their back ends most of the time
I sweat all summer to put hay in the mow
I work all winter just to feed the pigs and cows

Milkin’s all done, got my weather report
Got the day all planned for my job of work
Back to the pasture goes part of my life
I’m goin in the house to hug my wife

Gettin’ in the cows, shoo ‘em in the barn
Put ‘em in a stanchion, turn the radio on
Milk ‘em all dry, send ‘em out again
Wait a month on the dairy for the check to come in

Gettin’ in the cows, shoo ‘em in the barn
Put ‘em in a stanchion, turn the radio on
Milk ‘em all dry, send ‘em out again
Wait a month on the dairy for the check to come in
A month on the dairy for the check to come in

a little bit o' banter

Things are still really good in Chicago.
Every blade of grass is a greenback.
Every bird has a bill.
Every chimney has a draft.
Each ditch has two banks.
If that’s not enough I say even the streets are flushed.
The lawn get a rake-off.
Every cloud has a silver lining.
And every flower has a scent.
You put a dollar bill in your pocket in Chicago and you double it.
And when you take it out you find it in creases.

A Dollar Down and a Dollar a Week (trad.)

Well, a friend of mine bought a radio
A dollar down and a dollar a week
He said it’s the easiest trap I know
A dollar down and a dollar a week

He bought a rug and a violin
A fancy car and a mowing machine
A set of the lives of some famous men
Just a dollar down and a dollar a week

He bought a suit, a hat, and shoes
A dollar down and a dollar a week
He joined a club and paid his dues
A dollar down and a dollar a week

He bought a ring that was fair to see
The lilly white hand of his bride to be
And when he got married the minister’s fee
A dollar down and a dollar a week

When the baby came the doctor got
A dollar down and a dollar a week
My friend fed and clothed that tot
On a dollar down and a dollar a week

At last his wife said I must be free
These weekly payments are ruining me
She got a divorce and the alimony
Was a dollar down and a dollar a week

Dinky (Theodore Roethke)

Suppose you walk out in a storm
With nothing on to keep you warm
And then step barefoot on a worm
Of course it’s Dirty Dinky

As I was crossing a hot, hot plain
I saw a sight that caused me pain
You asked me before, I‘l tell you again
It looked like Dirty Dinky

Last night I lay -- a-sleeping? No!
The room was thirty-five below
The sheets and blankets turned to snow
He’d got in: Dirty Dinky

You’d better watch the things you do
You’d better watch the things you do
You’re part of him, he’s part of you
You may be Dirty Dinky

Oh, what’s the weather in a beard
It’s windy there and rather wierd
And when you think the sky has cleared
Why, there is Dirty Dinky

What a Wonderful Bird the Frog Are (anon)

What a Wonderful Bird the Frog Are
When he stands, he sit almost
When he hops, he fly almost
He ain’t got no sense hardly
He ain’t got no tail hardly either
When he sit, he sit on what he ain’t got almost

Beans (Bo Carter)

I don’t want no more navy beans
No, I don’t want no more
Don’t want no more navy beans
About to make my stomach sore

I had ‘em last night and the night before
When I got through I had to shut my door
Don’t want no more navy beans
No, I don’t want no more

I don’t want no more pickled beans
No, I don’t want no more
No, no more pickled beans
About to make my stomach sore

I had ‘em last night and the night before
A little bit of lovin’ and I have ‘em no more
Don’t want no pickled beans
No, I don’t want no more

I don’t want no more kidney beans
No, I don’t want no more
Don’t want no more kidney beans
About to make my stomach sore

I had ‘em last night and the night before
In the little house out back shut the door
Don’t want no more kidney beans
No, I don’t want no more

I don’t want no more kidney beans
No navy beans, no pinto beans, red beans, black beans, lionel beans, jelly beans
Don’t you be so unselfish, you just keep those beans over there with you

Stern Old Bachelor (Carter Family)

I have a stove, it’s worth ten cents
The table’s worth fifteen
I cook my gruel in oyster cans
And keep my things so clean

Oh, little sod shanty
Little sod shanty dear to me
I am a stern old bachelor
From matrimony free

When I come home late at night
I smile and walk right in
I never hear a voice call out
Or shout where have ya been

On a cold stormy night
In my cozy little shack
I sing my songs and think my thoughts
And no one to talk back

Oh, little sod shanty
Little sod shanty dear to me
I am a stern old bachelor
From matrimony free

I go to bed whenever I like
And I get up just the same
I wash my socks three time a year
With no one to complain

Late at night in peaceful sleep
My snores will do no harm
And I never have to walk the floor
With a baby in my arms

Oh, little sod shanty
Little sod shanty dear to me
I am a stern old bachelor
From matrimony free

And when I die and I go to heaven
As all good bachelors do
I’ll never have to grieve for fear
My wife will be there too

Oh, little sod shanty
Little sod shanty dear to me
I am a stern old bachelor
From matrimony free

Diddy Wah Diddy (Blind Arthur Blake)

Diddy wah diddy, oh diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

And I’m glidin’ on the interstate
Written in red on a license plate
I see diddy wah diddy, diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

Walkin’ on the avenue
I ask you what you want to do
You say diddy wah diddy, diddy wah diddy
Come over here and tell me what diddy wah diddy means

Ridin’ on a subway train
Up in the clouds in an airplane
I hear diddy wah diddy, everywhere, diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

My buddy said he got put out of church
For talkin’ about diddy wah diddy too much
Mr. diddy wah diddy (that’s what we call him) Mr. diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

I’m just sittin’ here drinkin my gin
Someone said Jim sing that song again
About diddy wah diddy, diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

The end days are goin’ to be a mystery
And it sure is puzzlin’ me
It’s a diddy wah diddy, a diddy wah diddy
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means
Can anybody tell me what diddy wah diddy means

Living A Ragtime Life (Gene Jefferson / Robt. S. Roberts)

Well, I got more trouble than I can stand
Ever since ragtime has struck the land
Never saw the like in all of my days
Everybody’s got that rag-time craze

I held out as long as I could
Then it got me and it got me good
At first I didn’t want ragged time
But now I’m right in line

I got a rag-time dog and a ragtime cat
A rag-time piano in my rag-time flat
I got rag-time clothes, from hat to shoes
I read a paper called the “Rag-time Newsâ€쳌

I got ragtime habits and I talk that way
I dream in rag-time and I rag all day
Got rag-time trouble with my rag-time wife
I’m certainly livin’ a rag-time life

I held out as long as I could
Then it got me and it got me good
At first I didn’t want ragged time
But now I’m right in line

I got a rag-time dog
And a ragtime cat
I read my “Rag-time Newsâ€쳌

Talkin’ Blues (Jack Pine Slim)

Well I sat down on the fishin’ hole
With my old cane fishin’ pole
When sum’pn grabbed my hook and took my bait
And drug me clear out to the middle of the lake
That was some kinda jump
Kinda got baptized on account

I’m standing down on a sandy bank
I felt a jerk so I give a yank
I pulled up some old steering wheel
Dodge radiator
An Oldsmobile
Let me tell you friends
These little fishies are drivin’ in style

I’m sittin’ in the boat with a bucket of beer
I ain’t caught nuthin’ but I didn’t much care
I guess I was pretty well satisfied
With my little lady right by my side
We’re waitin’
Oh, but not hesitatin’
Worm been gone off that hook about an hour now
We been busy

Well,I’m standin’ out on a sandy bar
And I rassled me an alligator gar
I drug him home across my back
His old tail was a-flappin for a mile and a half
Sold him to a tourist
And he hurried off to get his picture took

Well, I dove down in the river deep
And there was a 200 pound catfish lyin’ there asleep
I got on his back and I rode him around
Hell, I saddled him up and rode him into town
Kids come a-runnin’ and a-squealin’
Dogs are barkin’

Well, late late night I had a dream
Dreamed I was fishin’ in a whiskey stream
Well, I baited my hook with apple-jack
Tossed in a shot and drug a gallon back
I was doin’ mighty fine
Until that old crick run dry

I Like It Here (Charlie Maguire)

Well, I woke up this morning, it was forty below
Snow piled up past my door
Well, that’s all right but I live on the second floor
But I like it here

I got four pair of long johns under two pair of pants
Three ski sweaters and a raccoon hat
Two pairs of gloves and a fur-lined vest
Then I get outta bed and start to get dressed
But I say I like it here

Now the snow was piled so high when I went downtown
Could have shoveled that stuff upside-down
They say it’ll be like this until winter comes around
But I like it here

Oh Cold and Misery (Charlie Maguire)

It was early morn like so many before
Oh cold and misery
I put on my coat and I walked out the door
Standing alone on the frozen ground

I went to the place where my beast lay asleep
Oh cold and misery
On four tires of rubber, a long cord in its teeth
Standing alone on the frozen ground

I jammed in the key and I opened the door
Oh cold and misery
Not exhaust did I see nor the sound of a roar
Standing alone on the frozen ground

I went to my neighbor and to him I spoke
Oh cold and misery
He soon came a-ridin’ on white clouds of smoke
Standing alone on the frozen ground

We went to my beast and pried open its jaw
Oh cold and misery
But icy, black darkness was all that we saw
Standing alone on the frozen ground

On its terminals bare long cables I placed
Oh cold and misery
I gave it a charge with a smile on my face
Standing alone on the frozen ground

The smell of the ether did hang in the air
Oh cold and misery
And empty Heet bottles about everywhere
Standing alone on the frozen ground

And when we were moving its anger was gone
Oh cold and misery
From its radio voice came laughter and song
Standing alone on the frozen ground

But tonight when the dark comes to its moving parts
Oh cold and misery
It’ll again be the beast with the ice in its heart
Standing alone on the frozen ground
Standing alone on the frozen ground

"The Busjack's Lament" written by Jim-was always a favorite of mine.

and Jimmy Bufett's "He Went To Paris"

"Death Valley Romance" too

The late Fred Holstein, Jim and I used to do our Woody Guthrie Memorial birthday                tribute every July at the club called Holsteins on Lincoln avenue in Chicago. Sometimes the late Fleming Brown or Ginny Clemmens would with us for those shows. As I've noted in this forum, once in a while I wonder if I actually do know more dead people than live ones.
