Bought the LP "Dinner Music for People Who Aren't Very Hungry" with some of my bar mitzvah money. Still have it. "Wyatt Earp Makes Me Burp" is my favorite.

The one who actually does the horse race sequence is "Doodles" Weaver.

It think he also played a loopy trumpet at times. Not sure.

Weaver created Fietlebaum and other comic characters for Spike Jones.

Trivia: he was Sigourney Weaver's uncle.

Back in the late 40s/early 50s, my parents had a small collection of 78rpm records...a little Brahms, a smattering of Mozart & Liszt & one copy of 'Cocktails for Two' with 'Chloe' on the 'B' side if I remember correctly. No prizes for guessing which record got played the most!

What strange acquisition policies some libraries have...of course it would be stupid to have intellectual comedy items in a library ( the people might like them and borrow them and we can't have that )

Just a few short years ago I bought a Spike Jones CD still in its shrink wrapper, never been opened, at the ongoing sale of surplus books and stuff held by my local library, for $2 Aussie. When I questioned the reason I was told "it doesn't fit with our acquisition policy".

I was flabbergasted, my flabber was completely gasted.

Here comes Single Stitch hemmed in by Sewing Machine......

Jerry saw Spike Jones and His Orchestra perform live at The Palace Theater in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the highlight of his 10 year old life.

Anyone who can get a recognizable tune out of a sack of crow bars and a pistol has to be a great musician.

I remember when his song "The Fuhrers Face" hit the airwaves.It was his first hit.

I like most thngs he did but the gargling 'Hawaiian War Chant' is my all time favourite.

My favourite is The Ballad of Wild Bill Hickock - though not many people seem to know of this one. I had it on a 78 with a song about a quiet town on the other side

Many happy hours with such funny stuff, like his terrific Cocktails for Two and Chloe ['where are you, you old bat!'] and a hilarious Flight of the Bumble Bee [Rimsky-Korsakov].

The one that had me nearly in tears the first time I heard was his immortal I Went to Your Wedding. It's on YouTube.

Great stuff. My father's sister - only 14 years older than me - used to buy Spike Jones records on 78rpm. My treat, in the early '50s, was to go to my grandparents' house up the road and play them on the old wind-up gramophone. My first encounter with Spike was his version of Black Eyes - "Hotcha Chornia", with "Clink, Clink, Another Drink" on the other side.

But the record that had me literally crying with laughter the first time I heard it was "The Hawaiian War Chant". Priceless. Fond memories of a very funny man and a great musician.
