Subject: Lyr Req: Statler Brothers song
From: Gene
Date: 05 Oct 99 - 12:37 AM

Awhile back someone asked me about a song with the following [partial] lyrics...[title unknown]
I have heard the song...but it was a long time ago

I always wanted a friend named Red
A girl named Mary, and like I said
I always wanted a two-tone Chevrolet
But I never had any girl at all
And all my friends were named Fred or Paul
And I never did get my two-tone Chevrolet

or somethink similar to the above...

Is this the Gene, who knows every C & W song ever written?

I am in shock. Before I saw who posted the request, I checked COWPIE, but the Gene I know contributed half of COWPIE's inventory and would have looked there. Of course, there is not Statler Bros. song like that on COWPIE. I guess we'll have to wait for some wandering Statler Bros. fan who stumbles onto this web site.

Subject: Lyr Add: FRIEND NAMED RED (Brian Shaw)
From: GUEST,larrydonline

After nearly eight years, I can post the definitive answer to this question.
"Friend Named Red" by Brian Shaw on RCA Victor 0230 reached #50 on Billboard's country chart in 1974. The complete lyrics are:

I always wanted a friend named Red,
A girl named Mary, and like I said,
I always wanted a two-tone Chevrolet;
And I never had any girls at all,
And all my friends are named Jim or Paul or Dave.

One day in my favorite café,
This dream in front of me says, "What will you have today?"
And the name written on her dress said "Mary"
And I knew I had to get to her some way.
I knew I had to make her mine.
I moved right in. I didn't waste no time,
And soon I had a gal named Mary,
And Lord, she treats me mighty fine.

I quit my job and went to work instead,
Driving diesels with a man named Red,
And me and him were friends within a day;
And the money was high and the troubles were few,
And soon I had myself a two-tone Chevrolet.

And Mary ran off with my friend named Red.
Seems she decided she loved him instead,
And she wouldn't listen to the things I had to say;
But I didn't realize till they'd already gone,
They'd run off in my two-tone Chevrolet.

Thanks, GuestLarry!
I have this on 8track and have been spending years trying to get somebody to sing it so I can snag the words. Waiting for you to post it was a lot easier than trying to transcribe it.

Thanks

My 45 arrived yesterday and tomorrow we are sending it to be converted to a CD. Interestingly, I noticed that the Jordanairre's were also credited on the track. As a lifelong Elvis fan, I thought this was the cherry on the cake.

Thank you again for posting. When I get it back, I'll post to YouTube.
