My thanks to all of them for their contribution and may they all rest in peace. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 10 May 23 - 11:12 AM Apologies, but I haven't been able to post to this thread due to the site playing up! Looks like Max has sorted it now but I have a backlog to tackle! Thanks for your gentle nudges! Pete |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST Date: 10 May 23 - 07:19 AM A massive loss to music in general and Irish music in particular, I saw him many years ago when the Cheiftains did a concert in my home town Halifax. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 30 Apr 23 - 10:34 AM John O'Hagan has been added to the thread today. Many references to him on the web, especially some lovely tracks of him singing with Cockersdale. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 03 Mar 23 - 10:46 AM Today it was the turn of Mick McGarry to be added to the thread. He was a fine singer from the Hull area and will be sorely missed. Check him out on the Internet. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Feb 23 - 11:37 AM I have added Guy Benson the the thread today. You can listen to his singing and playing if you follow the links that Joe posted on the obit thread. He will be sadly missed. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:49 AM although Johnny Doyle doesn't have an obit thread, Pete, I did copy his obituary into the Music of Sliabh Luachra thread https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=155350 on 14 Jan 2023. While looking for the information, I also came across a more general article about Sliabh Luachra music which mentioned Johnny, so I added that as well. The obituary is above that article. Alf Mac Lochlainn (Ireland 1926-2018) is missing from the list. He is commemorated on the same thread as his son, Colm (1951-2022) who did make the list. I went to an Andy Irvine gig a couple of months ago, and one of the songs Andy sung was Alf's "My Son in Amerikay". Thomas Guthrie (USA 2016) has a Mudcat thread but hasn't made the In Memorium list yet. https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=124599 |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:10 AM I have also added Johnny Doyle and Mick Hand to the "Those who ought to have a thread but haven't" list. Thanks Felipa. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:06 AM I have added Les Barker to the roll today. Master of the humourous poem and a master of the written word. You will be missed but your work lives on. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 14 Jan 23 - 08:54 AM another Irish melodeon great, Johnny Doyle, died just a day ahead of the better-known Séamus Ó Beaglaioch. https://gript.ie/jimmy-doyle-imithe-uainn-a-musical-giant-from-gneeveguilla-has-died/ I've copied that article into the Music of Sliabh Luachra Mudcat discussion thread |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 12 Jan 23 - 04:16 PM I don't think anyone wrote at Mudcat when Irish flute player Mick Hand died in July 2020. Many people wrote tributes to, and memories of, Mick Hand at The Session website https://thesession.org/discussions/47308 |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 12 Jan 23 - 10:49 AM Seamus O Beaglaioch (aka Seamus Begley) has been added to the roll today. As always, there are some lovely examples of his art on the Internet. His music will live on. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 04 Jan 23 - 04:04 PM Thomas Guthrie (USA) died in 2016 https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=124599 Gabby McFarland died in Nov. 2021. https://rip.ie/death-notice/gabie-mac-farland-derry-city-derry/513148. Gabby wasn't well known, but would have sung at sessions/song circles, sometimes solo and sometimes with her husband and/or children. Husband Jim McFarland is well-known in Irish and British traditional singing circles. I see there are some Mudcat threads announcing dates he was performing in folk clubs in England; in 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2018. I've heard him once on zoom since Gabby's demise. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 04 Jan 23 - 11:48 AM I have added to people to the roll today, Austin John Marshall and Kevin Mitchell. Close in name but not in style although both were great exponents of their craft. Sadly I missed Austin back in 2013 so didn't include him then, but have rectified that error now. As his obituary says, he was pivotal in the folk revival of the 60's and 70's and was married to Shirley Collins at one time. He is also well known as the author of the poignant song, "Dancing at Whitsun". His style was mainly contemporary whereas Kevin Mitchell was a fine traditional singer with many superb songs in his repertoire. Both will be missed. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 25 Nov 22 - 11:27 AM Pete Ryder has been added to the roll today. A fine guitarist and singer. As always, check him out on the web. Plenty to enjoy there. RIP Pete, you will be missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: The Sandman Date: 14 Nov 22 - 02:07 PM Peter Wood was a fine singer and concertina player, he was a member of the Keelers shanty group, he was a stalwart of the Fighting Cocks folk club Kingston on Thames in the 1970s |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 14 Nov 22 - 10:55 AM Mike Redford has been added to the roll today. A man whose enthusiasm helped keep the wheels of Folk Music turning. Thanks Mike. You will be missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 08 Nov 22 - 10:27 AM Sadly, Peter Wood has also died. He was a great friend of traditional song in the UK. A great loss to us all. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 07 Nov 22 - 10:25 AM Today has seen the addition of Colin Irwin, folk journalist and Elizabeth Stewart, fine Scottish singer. Two people who did a great deal for folk music in their different ways. They will both be missed. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Oct 22 - 10:39 AM Mary McCaslin has been added to the roll today. A wonderful singer and multi-instrumentalist. Thanks Mary. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 13 Oct 22 - 10:56 AM I have added Bill Sables to the roll today. (Finally managed to find a slot when Mudcat wasn't "down"!) He was a great part of the folk scene and will be sadly missed. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Geordie-Peorgie Date: 24 Sep 22 - 04:59 PM Heya! Sorry if it sounded like I was doubting you, Waddon Pete! I just found it such a shock until I remembered that he always looked thirty years less than his allotted span! So very, very sad! GNU Hector! |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Geordie-Peorgie Date: 24 Sep 22 - 12:43 PM Heya! Wadding Pete! Where did you get the info on Hector from? |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Sep 22 - 10:24 AM Today I have added Hector Gilchrist and Lis Saya to the "In Memoriam" Roll of Honour. Hector was a gifted singer and player from this side of the Atlantic and Lis was a talented, enthusiastic and dedicated singer, player and organiser from the USA. Do look at their respective websites. There is a treat in store. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 19 Sep 22 - 05:04 PM Mick Softley, English singer songwriter, died in 2017. I learned one of his songs, Gold Watch Blues, from the singing of Donovan Leitch. I don't think there is a tribute to Softley on Mudcat but it's difficult to find out as the search engine hasn't been functioning well for ages. I didn't find anything searching via the filter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Softley |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 17 Sep 22 - 11:01 AM Jim Post and Paul Sartin have been added to the roll today. Two outstanding singers and musicians from either side of the Atlantic. Do have a look at the websites and information posted regarding these two fine folk musicians. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 25 Aug 22 - 09:54 AM Another entry to the folk session in the ether today. Juel Ulven has been added with a sense of loss. Another good folkie gone. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 03 Aug 22 - 10:42 AM I have added Grant Baynham, Nic Burdett, Graham Maisey, and Archie Roach to the roll today. Four complete opposites united by their love of music. They will all be missed. However, they leave behind a legacy that is well worth investigating. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 14 Jul 22 - 11:03 AM John Howson has been added to the roll today. John was a great collector of East Anglian traditions, songs and music making, especially hammer dulcimers. He was also a step dancer, stalwart of Sidmouth Folk Festival and researcher into the tradition as well as being the driving force behind "Veteran," the traditional folk music label. He will be greatly missed. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 27 Jun 22 - 11:23 AM I have added Colm Mac Lochlainn and Dennis Cahill to the thread today. They are from opposite sides on the Atlantic but united in their love of Irish music. Do check them out on the web. There is are some excellent clips on there to give you a measure of their contribution to the world of folk music. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Guest TF. Date: 26 Jun 22 - 08:34 PM Apologies for my error in the skiffle group thread. Sad to say Shirley Bland passed on in Holland on 4th May 2022. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Ebbie Date: 26 Jun 22 - 12:22 AM It’s been a long time since I read this thread in its entirety. The emotion known as ‘bittersweet’ may have been coined for this kind of experience. I toggled between moist eyes and grateful smiles as I read. Thank you for your dedication, Waddon Pete. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 23 Jun 22 - 09:20 AM Alex Beaton has been added to the roll today. A very enthusiastic and talented folk performer. Check out his website. Rest in Peace. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 13 May 22 - 09:49 AM I have added Ed Trickett to the roll today. A very talented performer. That says it all. Check him out on YouTube. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 01 May 22 - 11:02 AM I have added Geoff Pickles, Eric Pressley and Judy Henske to the roll today. Three people with completely different involvement in the world of folk but all successful, well thought of and sadly missed. My condolences go to all those who know and love them. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 28 Apr 22 - 11:26 AM Thanks for clarifying that Tattie. I have now deleted your name from the database. Your explanation sounds convincing! Thanks for the heads up! All the best, Pete |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Tattie Bogle Date: 28 Apr 22 - 10:48 AM No, I am one and the same Trish Santer, alive and kicking, aka Tattie Bogle, living in Edinburgh Scotland, both a Mudcatter and active on thesession.org. I've never been too secretive about my Mudcat nom de plume, so when I joined thesession.org, I just used my real name. I think maybe what happened is that, as Tattie Bogle, I supplied a list of names of Scottish musician friends who had not been mentioned on the In Memoriam thread, then must have signed it with my own name - which has then been included in the list of the sadly departed!! I'm definitely still here! So maybe you could remove my name from that list? (See post on 8th January 2012.) I checked on Facebook and there is a Trish Santer Helms in New York, but I don't know her, and don't think she's a Mudcatter. Keep up the good work, Pete Waddon! |
