Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 12 - 10:55 AM Beautiful, George! How lucky your wife is to have a husband who write such love songs. |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: katlaughing Date: 02 Jan 12 - 01:31 PM I agree, Jeri! You've come out with so many memorable, meaningful songs this past year (and before, of course!) Thanks for sharing. kat |

Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: GUEST,grumpy Date: 02 Jan 12 - 02:01 PM Ugh, sorry - very cloying, especially rhyming 'rocks' with 'walks'. I need to get a scrape. |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: George Papavgeris Date: 02 Jan 12 - 02:14 PM No problem grumpy, no need to apologise or for anonymity either, all honest views are valid and equally welcome. Some people like sentimental/cloying, others not. As for the rhyme "rocks"/"walks", it's called a "sprung" rhyme - matching final consonents, such as "cough"/"lough". I like honey, me... :-) |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: George Papavgeris Date: 02 Jan 12 - 02:22 PM Oops, "consonAnts"... |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: GUEST,grumpy Date: 02 Jan 12 - 02:37 PM 'Cough' and 'lough' only share final consonants in writing, not in pronunciation. |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: George Papavgeris Date: 02 Jan 12 - 02:56 PM Not to quibble, "bent" and "ant" then... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyme#Types_of_rhyme. The alternative is "oblique rhyme". In any case, they are both valid. I like Golden Syrup too :-) |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 12 - 03:09 PM Don't want to microscopically analyze the rhyming. I think one has to be trying hard to find something they don't like to have a problem with "walks" and "rocks". If I don't notice it accidentally, it doesn't matter to me. Then what can, do. Them what can't, bitch. (The "teaching" is for those who can do and can explain it so others can too.) |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: Acorn4 Date: 02 Jan 12 - 03:54 PM Joey Dee and the Starlighters managed to rhyme "la la" with "twilight." "Sitting in the larm lah, Waiting for my ya ya - agh agh" You can usually get away with approximate rhymes. Good song, George, and I'm sure appreciated by the good lady. |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: gnu Date: 02 Jan 12 - 04:29 PM "Beautiful" just about says it all. Grumpy... if I wasn't such a demure and polite young thing, I'd tell ya ta Well, there are SO many choices. You fit in the blank. |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: Acorn4 Date: 02 Jan 12 - 04:55 PM ...oh, by the way, was that sylph like silhouette really you? |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: George Papavgeris Date: 02 Jan 12 - 05:27 PM I am sorry to say that it was... Really sorry... |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: YorkshireYankee Date: 02 Jan 12 - 05:45 PM Heartwarming! Vanessa is a lucky lady -- and you already know what a lucky man you are -- which is, of course, why you wrote the song... |
Subject: RE: G Papavgeris: 'When She Is Smiling' From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Jan 12 - 08:15 PM George, somewhere around 100 years ago an advertiser considered an 11 stone (154lb, 70kg) woman a sylph! He was advertising some sort of weight reduction product in a magazine & promised a return to this sylph-like weight by faithful use of the product. sandra (who once was a sylph-like 11 stone) Happy New Year to you & Vanessa & wishing you many more great songs |
