Subject: Richard Gillis - music from Cable Hogue From: Songwronger Date: 08 Jan 12 - 08:01 PM Couldn't find the name Richard Gillis in a Mudcat search. Watched a movie called "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" a few days ago. Directed by Sam Peckinpah. Jerry Goldsmith did the score, apparantly in collaboration with a songwriter named Richard Gillis. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065446/soundtrack A link to a page with information about the soundtrack. An interview with Stella Stevens (female lead in "Cable Hogue") was on the DVD I watched, and she talked about the music briefly. She said something about Gillis playing in a bar where Peckinpah and his people drank, in Hollywood, I assume. She said Peckinpah liked Gillis' music and it ended up in the film. Anyone know anything about Richard Gillis? |

Subject: RE: Richard Gillis - music from Cable Hogue From: GUEST,A H White Date: 13 Apr 12 - 07:43 PM Richard sang and played at the Olive Branch Bar, in Burbank, near Warner Bros Studios, as well as Jason's in Toluca Lake. Not Hollywood. The guy that introduced him to Peckenpah was Gorden Dawson through his friend Bud Davis, via yours truly. |
Subject: RE: Richard Gillis - music from Cable Hogue From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Apr 12 - 10:46 PM Guest, A H White, this is a music discussion forum. We're interested in lots of performers and their music. A Google search on Richard Gillis comes up with some information. This talks about the movie of reference specifically. From the site: Peckinpah decided to utilise the songs of Richard Gillis for his movie. You may not have heard of Richard Gillis. This is because he was a bar singer the director just happened to come across, and he hired him there and then on a whim. He was even going to get him to write the movie's score, but wiser heads prevailed and Goldsmith got the gig. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0319311/ is the first place anyone should look for movie information in this day and age. (And on a personal note, I haven't seen Cable Hogue, but many years ago I saw the dystopian drama A Boy And His Dog and didn't notice the music, so I'll have to go back and give it a listen.) SRS |

Subject: RE: Richard Gillis - music from Cable Hogue From: GUEST Date: 19 Oct 19 - 08:33 AM Richard Gillis died on 31st July 2019: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/richard-gillis-dead-ballad-cable-hogue-songwriter-was-80-1231501 Apart from 'The Ballad of Cable Hogue' soundtrack and 'Blow the Gates to heaven', these are only other records I can find (all 45s): 'Tomorrow is the Song I Sing'/'Butterfly Mornings' (Promo for the movie. The first track is different from the two versions in The Ballade of Cable Hogue and the second is Gillis' vocal rather than Stevens/Robards on the soundtrack.) 'CB Santa Claus' 'Think It Over'/'Yesterday's Gone' |
