Brian Bedford is undoubtedly excellent, and I also support the idea of Jon Loomes, and if you feed his stuffed cat tequila (don't ask) you may well be able to get him to add pretty well any instrument to back you. He's one of those infuriating "real musicians" to whom you can hand an instrument invented a nanosecond ago in the Delta quadrant designed to be played using the second thirty-two tentacles and controlled by ESP, and in five minutes he's playing tunes on the sodding thing. And despite that he's nice and supportive of lesser musicians too (as, I'm sure, Brian Bedford is too).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - plenty to go on there. Still waiting to hear from Brian (only emailed him on Monday) but we've had some contact with Alistair Russell in Cleckheaton plus Andy Bell, due to his close location, recommendations and back catologue would also seem to be a good possibility.

Hello Jack's Rake, this is Jane of the Backyard Buskers; would endorse Andy Bell as producer and Yellow Arch studios; can't comment on BB from direct experience, but others obviously like him. Guess it's about £ too in the end.
It will be great to hear your live sound captured on CD!

How about enquiring around at music shops and venues in your area.
By networking there will be those in the know of home studios.
As an example here in the south-east as a tech I helped rebuild a friend's home attic studio. He got his reputation by hearsay.

I feel your pain brother. I have also spent something like three years trying to make decent home recordings and got pretty much nowhere.

I'm about to go into a place called Soup Studio, but it's in London.

I know Richard Hawley recorded in a place called Yellow Arch in Sheffield (and I've always liked the overall sound/vibe of his albums). Probably pricey though).

I would suggest that even more important than the studio is having a sound engineer/producer who understands the music and used to working with your instruments, and knows what sound they should make.

Wnen Albireo made our CD Nothern Cross we went to Jon Loomes, then in Doncaster, who is both a very good engineer and very good folk musician who plays pretty much anything. He's now in Ripponden, although I think the studio might now be at the Music Room in Cleckheaton

Andy Bell is based in Sheffield and he has produced some great work over the past year; Spiers and Boden, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, Lady Maisery, Fay Hield...

Ok, so we've given up the three year long attempt to produce some decent recordings at home and intend to go into a studio and do it properly.

The initial intention was to knock up a decent demo. but, since the studio will cost money plus people keep asking us for cds at our gigs, it seems to make sense to go the whole hog and make an album.

So, does anybody have any recommendations for an appropriate studio which is fairly close to Sheffield and could cope with a band of 6 or more with violins, flutes, guitars, squeezeboxes and lots of voices and produce for us a live sounding mix of some of our songs and tunes?

I've already contacted and am waiting for a reply from Brian Bedford's studio which seems just the ticket given the location and his background but, in case that doesn't work out I'd be delighted to hear your recommendations.
