I was diagnosed with nodes on my thyroid in 1999 & I see an endocrinologist yearly or in recent years every 2 years as the nodes have not grown. The largest node is 1cm.

gnu - they stick in a needle with some anesthetic (technician says 'this will sting') it does,

After an appropriate amount of time they poke in a biopsy needle into places shown to have nodes in the previous scan - sometimes I feel an ouch, sometimes I feel more then an ouch. But I'm sure there are many worse procedures.

eagerly awaiting your results, ChanteyLass

Sandra, 15 years--wow!

This is just a guess or positive thinking: I don't think anything was found. When I had parathyroid problems and needed surgery a few years ago, the technician spent much more time on one side of my neck than the other, and that turned out to be the side with the problem. This time both sides seemed to get equal attention with no hesitation or backing up. If there is a problem, I'll hear from the endocrinologist in a few days.

thyroid scans are easy - they just squirt thick sticky stuff on your neck & rub/squash it in with a monitor thingy. (insert smiley face) and you can watch the screen - which is a very boring image that tells you nuffin'

It's thyroid biopsies that have an ouch! And I'm due for my next scan & biopsy in March.

Manuel, the good news I that there is no preparation needed for the thyroid scan--well, I think it's really an ultrasound I'm going to have. I'll do yoga at the Y, change clothes, drive a short distance to the Y, fill out some paperwork, and then I'll be ready! So that is a good thing about this test.

Thanks again for the good wishes, folks!

Thanks, Friends. I needed reassurance and a place to whine.

I took my friend shopping today. She bought two huge sweatshirts that she can wear over her arm in the cast. She wanted to go to Walmart, so I took her there although I dislike the way it treats employees. However, I looked for a 7-inch (yes, 7) TV because mine died last night. I wanted to see if they had one although I planned to look elsewhere and buy at Walmart only if no other store had one. Walmart didn't have any and neither did any of the other 11 stores I went to before and after taking her shopping! She loves to shop but was understandably tired because of course she's not sleeping well. I hate to shop, but I was on a mission which failed. I have seen the small TVs online, but I don't shop online. Oh, and I told my friend that I normally shop for food and go to the laundromat on Thursdays and will take her with me then so she can do the same. She bought a few food items at Walmart today to tide her over. At my suggestion she also bought a laundry bag with an over-the-shoulder carrying strap since she won't be able to carry her laundry baskets.

I have a thyroid scan scheduled on Tuesday. My endocrinologist has been nagging me to get one, so this year I finally caved. Wish me luck!

Chanteylass, you aren't being selfish - your friend is thoughtless. There's a difference!

Five years ago I broke my arm while on holiday in Canada and for the rest of our holiday there it was cold enough to need warm clothes, but I managed all right. When we came back to Oz light summer wear was all that was needed......I wore skirts instead of long pants, for ease of dressing.

My friend is doing surprisingly well. On Wednesday the orthopedist replaced the hospital cast with a shorter, lighter one. He wants to see her again in two weeks. She scheduled that next appointment without consulting me even though I was in the waiting room. She knew the first appointment was at an inconvenient time for me, but since I knew someone at the hospital had scheduled it, I cancelled my plans to accommodate her. Unfortunately, she scheduled the next one for the same time and day of the week, interfering with the same two things on my schedule. When she told me, I said, "What? Why didn't you ask if that time was all right with me?" She said, "Maybe my neighbor can drive me." I told her if her neighbor couldn't, I want her to change the appointment to Thursday when I can be free at any time. I talked to her tonight (Friday) and she hasn't talked to the neighbor or changed her appointment (which she couldn't have done on yesterday's Thanksgiving holiday) yet. Of course I will drive her even if I have to cancel my plans again, but I won't be happy! Someone just nominate me for the Selfish Award!

JennieG, I found another shirt for my friend and a sweatshirt with a long top that buttons, and she found that she could get into one heavy winter jacket.

Well, I'm still fine but a friend called me this morning (Tuesday) to tell me she broke her upper arm in 3 places yesterday when a steel door of her bulkhead crashed down on it. She was able to walk to a neighbor's house. The neighbor, a retired nurse, drove her to the emergency room and home after she'd been put in a cast and sling and given meds. Tomorrow I'll drive her to an orthopedist's office. She may need surgery. This friend is ill-prepared to dress for this. She lives alone. She does have some elastic-waist slacks but all her tops are pullovers. She has no shawls or capes, but she did think she could find a throw that might do for a shawl. I'm bringing her 3 flannel shirts.

Sunny and 18C! I have an uneasy feeling about it. 3/4 moon is Saturday. This is the seventh cycle of cold-warm-cold this fall and this is pretty warm. Not that there could be a Buffalo on the way but any amount of snow bothers Mum greatly (yes, I know youse have heard that before) so I do get uneasy feelings these days. The rags are talking about a possible snow on Thursday but the various forecasts are all over the place so I'll have to rely on my 40+ years of experience living here and say... it ain't here yet so we'll see.

Glad to hear your session went well, Nigel.

Pete, I'm going to have to rename you: "Mad Tom"! You obviously know your Halliard Broadsides.
No, bedlam it wasn't & we only spent half an hour chatting & drinking tea before we got down to work. A scheduled three hour session had to be curtailed due to a very sore bunch of left-hand fingers, but we did succeed in getting a couple of choruses 'in the can'. Not folk music...my friends are writing m.o.r. ballads (we believe that there is still a market for melody & intelligent lyrics). The sort of songs that singers like Adele could do a really good job with. Next session, next week...can't wait!
Trusting that all is well with everyone,

Big day in a small way for me, today. I'm playing guitar & mandolin for a recording session at a local studio. Haven't played 'properly' since 2005. I've heard the song, so I know roughly what will be expected of me...some solid rhythm playing on guitar & the occasional 'fill' on mandolin. I'm looking forward to the session immensely...only three of us...we've known each other for ages, so we'll probably end up talking & drinking tea more than recording! It's a reunion for the three of us. We haven't worked together for several years...life & all it's vicissitudes getting in the way, but a chance meeting in the street; a brief phone call & voilà...take 1.
Keep warm, stay safe, much love to you all,

Very comforting & reassuring to read so many responses. The media, of course, tends to concentrate on the worst hit areas (more opportunities for dramatic pictures & hyperbole). Your posts provide a broader view which the 'news hounds' would rarely bother with. All the life boats aboard The Rainbow are at your disposal, should the predicted thaw happen sooner & quicker than desired (being a metaphorical ship, the number of lifeboats is unlimited...naturally!)

Manuel, you were correct about my (sp.?)...one of those words that is so familiar to me & having typed it, the doubts crept in. Thank you for the affirmation. Ann's card party was successful, due largely to the efforts of our two Granddaughters who visited every house in their road, knocked on the doors & delivered a personal invitation. They also made mince pies & warmed up a huge panful of mulled wine. When Jane was still with us, the first card party was her idea. It was an absolute delight & very moving to see her daughters taking up the reins.

The composing of the viola octet is complete, but still to do: editing, a final mix & mastering & score preparation, prior to publication. There are times when I find these processes absorbing & rewarding & times when they frustrate the hell out of me!

Keep warm...stay safe...much love to you all,

I'm fine here in Rhode Island where parts of the state (including mine) got only an overnight dusting a few nights ago. It stuck to the grass, not to pavement, and turning on my car's windshield wipers cleared away the snow left on my car when I wanted to drive.

The football game will probably be played in another city. The powers that be have given up on clearing the stadium in time. Also, warming and possible rain may cause flooding in the area. Let's hope the meteorologists are wrong about that.

Olddude has a thread about the snow. Not a usual occurrence but not unheard of. When yer snuggled up next to a Great Lake, it's bound to happen. I think the shock of it comes from being so early in winter.

We are due for one but I hope, for Mum's sake, it doesn't come anytime soon. The last one was in 92. If memory serves (50/50 chance of that), we had 1.6m. Again with the memory, I think the pic of Mum's driveway I posted was taken after that storm.

Now, when I was a boy... >;-)

Of course, the big talk around the water cooler is whether or not the Buffalo Bills game on Sunday will go ahead as planned. They have asked fans to help out. Here's a quote from an article :

"Love your football team? Time to put your shovel where your heart is.

Amid forecasts that Buffalo, New York could see one year's worth of snow over three days in the first snowstorm of the season, the city's beloved NFL team has taken to extreme measures to clear its hallowed playing grounds in time for Sunday's big game — kickoff time, 1 p.m. Eastern. An eye-popping 220,000 tons of snow has been dumped on the Ralph Wilson Stadium, enough to fill the team's fieldhouse eight times over, says the Bills.

"We have not had this much snow as far as we know in the history of our team," said Andy Major, the Bills's vice-president of operations and guest experience, in a news release. "It might take three days or so to remove one foot of snow before a game, and now we've got four feet of snow on a 200-acre site, where there's potential for more coming. So right there, it gives you the magnitude.""

Good morrow, sorry, afternoon,Nigel. Re your penultimate post, I do hope that you are close to breaking the back of those final bars and that the card party was a success. By the way, if the bracketed"sp?" was an indication of doubts about the correct spelling of Sir Thomas's surname, they were, happily, unfounded.

Excellent idea, billybob. Hot chocolate is fun. Hope the poor toe mends quickly. My pal Joey broke a toe in a similar accident the day he turned 40!

All this snow talk is making me shiver! Making hot chocolate in the galley, who has the marshmallows?

Trying to get organised for tomorrow nights Chamber of Commerce meeting, don't ask !! My father always said do not join a committee or offer to help! Wise words, but I have been the secretary for 5 years and as the chairman hasn't shown his face for a year I seem to be acting Chairperson, as if I have the time? So we are up to our eyes organising our Late Night Christmas event for December 12th. I have to book the entertainment, two silver bands, a pipe band, folk band and a few solo singers, childrens choirs, dance troupes.( No morrismen so far, so if you are within travelling distance of Frinton you are very welcome!!)all this with a rotten cold and a broken toe.( tried to look after mum, make a Christmas cake, clean the house all at the same time on Monday , and walked into the caster under the settee, OUCH!

So hot chocolate and thirty minutes with feet up.

Love to all,

Wendy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Beckey done just about all the Xmas shopping.    Apart from her loving shopping (sexist observations! ), she wanted to make sure it was all done in case tommy was in hospital over the holiday season again. But so far he seems to be doing pretty well.                     There,s something special about getting a well made hand made card, esp when you know the craftsperson. We had quite a lot left from mum, and most are now gone, but some are kept and treasured by loved ones.      Blessings.   Pete.
