Dean, I tried the first link I got Page Not Found, but the second link took me to the crocuses which are lovely.

Sandra and Nigel, thank you both for your interest in and concern for Don Sineti. Saturday's benefit for him was more sparsely attended than I would have wished, but that may be because many people plan to go to benefits closer to their homes. This one was closest to mine and I probably won't make it to any others. Also some people have sent checks directly to Don.

At this benefit, I summoned up the courage to lead the double-pull halyard chantey A Hundred Years Ago. I had that morning taken the second of four chantey classes at Mystic Seaport. I had written my own verses based on the history of the Charles W. Morgan. I took liberties with the history and rhyming patterns, and it's obviously written by an amateur. I first sang it in the class with a quavering voice but made it through without my throat constricting from nervousness and ended with cheeks flaming with embarrassment. My classmates were kind and encouraging. At the benefit my voice quavered less and so many strong voices joining in was a huge support.

ChanteyLass, thank you for bringing Don Sineti to our attention. Not knowing him, a quick search on You Tube revealed a larger than life character with a voice to match...muscular, chanty singing that no audience could resist. I wish him well & trust he recovers completely. Folk Music needs the talent that is Don Sineti.

There's a thread about Mystic Seaport chantey singer Don Sineti who had heart surgery in late December. He's home now, but several benefits will be held for him. The first will be at Mystic on Saturday. Keep him and a complete recovery in your thoughts. I don't know why I didn't post about this sooner. I hardly know him, but his music has often brought me joy.

Dear Sandra, The Musician's Union in the UK ran a slogan campaign some years ago: "Keep Music Live". We were supplied with a bunch of round, yellow stickers which we proudly stuck on our instrument cases, in the back windows of our cars...almost anywhere really to generate as much awareness as possible. You & your colleagues are Keeping Music Live & by doing so, you are "Keeping Music Alive"...interesting the difference made by the addition of a single vowel.
          Any chance of some audio from one of your sessions?

I spent 6 days in Canberra for our National Folk Festival where we presented 3 Saplings workshop & a 30-min concert spot.

My favourite among the participants were 2 beginners who had no instruments with them so played lagerphones & did an excellent job.

Nigel, I'll pass your comment to our organisers.

Another illustrated blog article is on it's way. I took 450 photos all weekend & 100 were of the saplings workshops.

The festival also runs traditional music workshops & Saplings were evident in some, including BMC's Waltz-a-thon of 40 or so waltzes!

Dear Sandra, I said, sometime ago that I wanted to write more about 'Saplings'. Just looking at the photos & imagining the sound of the ensemble was uplifting. The expressions on the participants faces told their story. Musical experiences like this tend to make a lifetime impression on the individual. The 'Saplings' may not make Music their career, but you & your Club Members have given these young folk a priceless gift...they will see, hear & value Music with a greater understanding. Many will go on to appreciate how Music reaches into every corner of our lives & is not an elitist luxury, but an essential ingredient for a healthy, well-rounded life. I send my heartiest congratulations to You All for what you have achieved so far & for what you will achieve in the future...BRAVO!

Maeve, thank you for alerting me to the very sad news of John Renbourn's death. We (The Halliard), worked with him many times, back in the halcyon days of the 60s Folk Revival. He wasn't a 'friend' in the strict sense of the word, but I grew to respect & admire his talent & evolving creativity. He was a lovely, gentle-man...a great loss to Music. My sincere condolences to his Family & Friends,

Dear Nigel and Ann

Have been thinking of you both this week and sending love and good thoughts.As Pete said " Jane's Day" and without her there would be no Rainbow, we all owe her so much, bringing us all together . This love and support happens no where else in my experience, so thank you Nigel and Ann.

Having a very low time with worries about trying to get the continuing care for mum , not selling her bungalow and her care bill debt adding up week by week. Plus I am so aware that Billy says little and worries about me, he is my rock but I feel I should put him first much more bless him.

We both need a few days break away from everything and some time on our own, but not possible at the moment.

Thank you, all, for your words of kindness...the beautiful Music...the hugs & the stunning photos.
         Ann & I enjoyed our brief sojourn by the sea. UK Catters & Crew Members may be familiar with 'Tomassi's' of Southend-on-Sea.
         Strange to tell, today (24th) feels like how we thought we might feel yesterday. Ann was very distressed at breakfast & we both wept copiously. Yesterday's distractions, no matter how pleasant, masked our thinly obscured emotions, which had to be expressed eventually. All is now calm & steady in the Paterson household. We resolved to refer to all future 23rds of March, simply as: 'Jane's Day', on which we will do something that we would have all enjoyed.
